Bafta TV Awards 2025, BBC One review: Alan Cumming turned the Festival Hall into a laugh-free zone
First-time Bafta TV awards host Alan Cumming had cautioned viewers against expecting wall-to-wall jokes. 'I don't see it as a stand-up comedy routine,' he told the Telegraph, and goodness was he true to his word. Taking over from the deadpan duo of Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan, Cumming turned the ceremony at London's Royal Festival Hall into a laugh-free zone – starting with an opening monologue that had about as many chuckles as Mr Bates vs the Post Office, the state-of-the-nation drama that was one of the big winners of the evening.
Cumming kicked off with a skit about his day job as the face of The Traitors USA – a gag which might have struck a chord on the far side of the Atlantic but which, airing on BBC, was a reminder of how much better Traitors UK presenter Claudia Winkleman is at the cloak and dagger stuff.
His introductory remarks were rich in smarm, low on wit. There was a gag about Prince Andrew docudrama Scoop not having any ice cream and Troubles thriller Say Nothing being full of people talking constantly. A vague ripple of titters passed around the room.
Comedy wise Cumming never got out of first gear. Most of the zingers revolved around the two television shows he seemed to have watched last year: Traitors and Jilly Cooper romp Rivals. He will have been relieved to see that the celebrities handing out awards weren't any funnier. One excruciating low point featured actors Daniel Mays and Russell Tovey giving shout-outs to random members of the public before naming Mr Bates winner of Best Limited Drama. Mid-routine, the camera had cut to a bored-looking David Mitchell and then to an even more disconsolate James Corden. He hadn't looked so glum since forced to apologise for being rude to that waiter in New York.
Musical guests seemed to have wandered in from next year's Brit Awards. Tom Grennan bashed out a song that asks the audience to imagine a mildly funkier Ed Sheeran. Then came Jessie J's big comeback as she made her first TV appearance in six years. Alas, the diva-like majesty of her power ballad was undermined slightly by the decision to have her start singing from the middle of the crowd – her performance accompanied by shots of audience members wandering back from the loo.
The TV Baftas are, by their very nature, less searingly glitzy than the movie ceremony. The film Baftas have the stars of Hollywood; its TV sibling, the cast of Taskmaster. Still, amid the slog, there were some memorable moments, including appearances at the podium by a tearful Marisa Abela (winning Leading Actress for Industry), Danny Dyer, Lennie James, Ruth Jones, and Strictly's Dianne Buswell – the latter accepting the Memorable Moment prize on behalf of herself and the show's 2024 winning celeb Chris McCausland. There was even a genuine shock when Belfast police drama Blue Lights scored Best Drama ahead of head-chopping costume extravaganza Wolf Hall.
The In Memoriam section featured a beautiful performance by violinist Esther Abrami as it marked the passing of, among others, Michael Mosley, Henry Kelly, Tony Slattery, and original Shōgun actor Richard Chamberlain. Winning the Best Daytime category for his Caribbean Adventure, Clive Myrie, for his part, asked the industry to support the struggling independent sector.
Earlier, Mr Bates vs the Post Office's producer, Patrick Spence, had praised viewers for responding to the dramatisation of the scandal in which hundreds of sub-postmasters were falsely accused of theft. 'They showed in their responses we cannot abide liars and bullies,' he said. It was an all-too-rare display of genuine emotion in an evening full of sparkle but sadly lacking in substance. If he's asked back, Cumming should consider packing his joke book next time.

Naomi Campbell claims she has been 'misunderstood' by the public and reveals the lessons she wants to pass down to her children as she poses for striking cover shoot
Naomi Campbell insisted she has been 'misunderstood' by the public as she posed for a striking cover shoot with Dazed magazine. The model, 46, is as well known for her diva attitude as she is for striking good looks, but claimed that as a Gemini star sign, there are 'two sides' to her, mainly through exhibiting introverted and extroverted behaviour. She mused: 'That's where Geminis are misunderstood, but we are the ultimate communicators and connectors... 'I can't please everybody. All that I do is transparent, and I am very loyal to the people I love. I care about the people I love. I value my long relationships. 'In friendships, I don't have time for the word "frivolous". I don't associate with that word, it's not who I am. When I care, I care… but don't mistake my kindness for weakness.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Talk also turned to the lessons that she was hoping to impart on her children. The supermodel shocked the world when she announced the surprise birth of her daughter in 2021, followed by a son in 2023, both of whose names the catwalk queen has not made public. Discussing her parenting approach, she mused: 'I want to pass on the inner strength, the discipline. Pass on the things that were shared with me from my grandmother, my aunts and my mother. The most important thing for me is for my kids to be happy.' She added that she felt 'blessed' to be able to travel and see the world with her children like she had down with her own mother. Alongside the interview, Naomi posed for a striking photoshoot that saw her model an array of skimpy ensembles. She transformed into a butterfly for the cover snap, posing in a skintight mini dress and boasting large yellow wings. Naomi wore beads in her long dark hair for the shoot, while flashing her toned legs in a ruffled yellow gown. Another stunning snap saw her pose braless beneath a beaded mesh dress. Naomi wore beads in her long dark hair for the shoot, while flashing her toned legs in a ruffled yellow gown Naomi confirmed last year that she welcomed both her children via surrogate after becoming a mother for the first time in 2021 aged 50 and posed with the newborn on the cover of Vogue. She previously admitted that her daughter wasn't adopted before clarifying that she hadn't been pregnant herself as she discussed how much her children mean to her. Telling The Times: 'My babies are everything to me. It's made me fear for the future.' Naomi went on to explain that she was never looking for a father for her kids and is happy being 'a single mother of a single mum'. When asked whether she used a surrogate she replied: 'I did. I hope for a better world for my children. They are 110 per cent my priority. I have to be there for them on their first day at school.' Her daughter's arrival sparked widespread speculation that she used a surrogate, a popular approach among older celebrity mothers, because she was not spotted with an obvious baby bump in the months leading up to the birth. Naomi also spoke of her concern that younger generations are not interested in having children and she insisted parenthood is always 'worth it', no matter how difficult the circumstances. She said: 'I have heard a lot of young girls saying that it is too expensive to have children and they may not want them, and I have said, "You will change your mind. You will want to be a mum"'. 'I understand economically it is tough. But my mum had nothing and she made it work. It's worth it. It is so amazing'. She continued: 'We have to depend on the younger generation to change this world. I trust my children more than us to do the right thing.' Elsewhere in the interview, she revealed that she won't let her daughter go into the world of work at 15 like she did, after starting her own career in her teenage years when she did her first cover shoot. The beauty, who was whisked abroad to model in her first photoshoot for Elle in New Orleans aged 15, said she would be uncomfortable with her now three-year-old to start working so young. The mother-of-two said: 'I'm not sure I would let her start working at 15. It's a ruthless world.'

Sam Thompson battles on in torrential rain as injured and emotional star is joined by Chris Hughes on day two of gruelling 260-mile endurance challenge
Sam Thompson looked visibly emotional as he was met with horrendous weather conditions on day two of his gruelling Soccer Aid Challenge. The beloved TV and radio star, 34, was joined by former Love Island star and good pal Chris Hughes, 32, for support on Tuesday. Sam has been given the task to travel a mammoth 260-mile journey on both bike and foot to deliver the match ball to its new home in Old Trafford, with the hope of raising much-needed funds for Unicef. To complete the challenge, the I'm A Celeb star is expected to run a marathon for five days and cycle in between, ensuring the ball arrives on June 6, just in time for kickoff on Sunday, June 15. And in new images, Sam, who is suffering from a calf injury, looked downcast as he was soaked head-to-toe by the heavy rain. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The star decided to cycle the remaining miles of his Tuesday challenge after revealing he 'popped his calf' and was strapped into a medical table just the day before. Sam was seen red-faced from the wet weather and appeared to sigh as he wiped away the water from his face. In an attempt to boost morale, Chris joined his pal on the bike as Sam continued on with his challenge. Later on, the pair beamed for a snap together inside a building as Sam rested on a massage bed with some lunch. Following their meeting, Chris went to his Instagram stories to share clips of their cycle together. Gushing over his pal, he penned: 'Keep donating towards Sam's challenge, it's seriously inspiring and he needs every boost he can get. I saw the emotion drain from him earlier, he battles on and is doing so well.' Earlier in the day, Chris smirked when he was grilled about his relationship with JoJo Siwa, 22, live on This Morning. The former Love Island star appeared on the daily ITV show from Towcester where he was covering Sam's Soccer Aid challenge. During the segment, host Ben Shephard asked Chris a cheeky question about him and JoJo. 'Can we just say, because obviously we're all talking about it. Congratulations on the relationship, we're all very excited, have we decided whether it's Hughes-wa... what's the power couple name?' Ben asked. Co-host Cat eagerly added: 'What is it going to be?' 'They call it Co-Jo, that's the one they're all going for,' Chris replied. The two presenters gushed that they liked the name and Chris commented it 'rolls off the tongue'. JoJo and Chris have sparked frenzied speculation about their relationship status over the past few weeks since they met in the Celebrity Big Brother house back in April. Their relationship has grown from platonic to romantic and the Dance Moms star confirmed that she and Chris have made their relationship official, and she's started calling him her boyfriend in an interview with Capital Radio. On Sunday, Chris sent fans into a frenzy when he shared a steam bedroom snap with JoJo on Snapchat. Sharing the sweet image of himself and JoJo cuddled in bed together, he captioned the image: 'Sleeping beauty.' While in an interview with The Guardian, JoJo gushed about her blossoming romance with Chris, when asked whether things between them were still platonic. She said: 'It's not platonic anymore, and it's been a beautiful development, a beautiful connection, and I'm absolutely head over heels for him and he's the same way.' The Dance Moms star also hit back at speculation that their relationship is a 'PR stunt,' saying: 'Clearly, you've never been around us. I won't ever speak for him, but for me personally, the happiness in my life just radiates off of me right now. 'Literally yesterday, I was massaging my cheeks; I've never [before] been in pain from smiling so much.' JoJo also appeared on Sunday's edition on Sunday Brunch, and fought back tears as she emotionally shared how Chris has been embraced by her family since he first flew to the US to surprise her for her 22nd birthday last month. She said: 'She loves him, she does love him. My parents think the absolute world of him, and him and my Dad are like best friends, Chris was actually telling me this yesterday, they went to the spa together yesterday. 'They're literally best friends, Mom Siwa she absolutely adores him. I love watching her watch us, because I've never seen my mom so happy, and it's... it's... I could cry. 'Honestly, it makes me happy to have everybody act as... it feels like we're a family, it feels like he's been in my family for how ever many years it feels like forever.
