KUALA LUMPUR: The revamped Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme has generated a total of RM839.9mil in revenue since the introduction of new criteria last year, says Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (pic).
The Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister said the amount comprises RM597.5mil in fixed deposit investments, RM237.2mil in property investments and RM5.2mil in participation fees.
'These figures not only reflect Malaysia's attractiveness as a preferred destination, but also demonstrate applicants' confidence in the country's economic stability and long-term prospects,' Tiong said in a written parliamentary reply to Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (PH-Balik Pulau).
He added that the programme's economic spillover also benefits sectors such as education, healthcare and insurance services.
To enhance competitiveness and appeal, he said the government has introduced a three-tiered structure for MM2H - Platinum, Gold and Silver - in addition to a special category for applicants under Special Economic or Financial Zones.
According to him, each tier is differentiated by criteria such as age, financial capability, duration of stay, eligibility to bring dependents and length of the MM2H pass.
'All applications must be submitted through licensed MM2H agents under the Tourism Industry Act 1992 to strengthen overall programme governance and integrity,' Tiong said.
As of June 30, a total of 3,019 applications had been received since the new policy came into effect in October 2024, he said.
This includes 48 applications under Platinum, 137 under Gold, 2,434 under Silver and 400 under the Special Economic or Financial Zone category.
Out of these, Tiong said 1,294 applicants have received endorsement passes, consisting of 19 in Platinum, 61 in Gold, 1,020 in Silver and 194 in the special zone category.

New study underway to ensure fair pay for Gen Z, millennials

KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Resources Ministry is conducting a feasibility study on implementing a minimum wage for graduates, aimed at ensuring fair starting salaries that reflect their qualifications and skills. Its minister, Steven Sim, said the study, carried out through the National Wages Consultative Council, is a comprehensive effort crucial to addressing salary expectations among younger workers, particularly those from Generation Z and Y (millennials), who now make up the majority of the country's labour force. "The study is important to ensure that graduates, the majority of whom are from the Generation Z and millennial cohorts, receive starting salaries that are commensurate with their qualifications. "This includes ensuring their income is aligned with their academic qualifications and skills and is also relevant to the current challenge of rising living costs. "The findings and related policy proposals will be submitted to the government once finalised," he said in a written parliamentary reply published today. He was responding to Young Syefura Othman (PH-Bentong), who enquired about the government's intervention plan to improve the wage structure in employment sectors dominated by Generation Z and millennials, who are currently facing a high cost of living. Citing the 2023 Salaries and Wages Survey Report by the Statistics Department, Sim said 76 per cent of the 10.1 million wage earners are aged between 15 and 44. He said graduates aged 15 to 29, representing Generation Z, currently earn an estimated median monthly salary of between RM1,529 and RM2,076. Meanwhile, those aged 30 to 44, representing millennials, earn between RM2,702 and RM3,381. "The young workforce, which makes up the majority of the country's labour market, holds significant potential to be empowered through government policy interventions that support the improvement of their well-being and competitiveness in the future economy. "In this regard, the government has taken several strategic measures to address the issue of wage structure and ensure a fairer distribution of income, including the implementation of the Minimum Wage Order, the Productivity-Linked Wage System and the Progressive Wage Policy."

Penang Hill cable car project gets rolling with RM367m financing deal

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 6 — The Penang Hill Cable Car project received a RM367.2 million infusion today after Hartasuma Ropeways Sdn Bhd inked a financing partnership with Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (BPMB), paving the way for full-scale works to begin. The signing ceremony marks a critical milestone for the development of a second public transportation mode up the popular tourist destination. In his speech at the event, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the timing of the agreement was opportune, coming just as the existing funicular service hits a major milestone. 'As of July 25, the Penang Hill funicular service has officially crossed the one million ridership mark for this year,' Chow said, noting that this surge in visitors highlights the urgent need for new infrastructure on the hill. 'They also make clear that the need for cable car is no longer theoretical; it is urgent,' he asserted. However, Chow stressed that the cable car is meant to supplement the funicular rather than replace it. Project details and timeline Hartasuma Ropeways is a special purpose vehicle under Hartasuma Sdn Bhd. The financing facility from BPMB is the bank's first blended finance initiative, combining debt financing with an equity investment through its subsidiary, BPMB Dana Sdn Bhd. The cable car system is designed to carry up to 1,400 passengers per hour in each direction, offering a scenic 10-minute journey from the Penang Botanic Gardens to the summit. According to Hartasuma executive director Tan Sri Ravindran Menon, the project is expected to be completed and operational by early 2027. He added that it is also projected to create nearly 400 jobs, foster youth training programmes, and ensure inclusive access for people with disabilities.
