Scottish Poundland store included on list of retailer's latest closures

The latest announcement means the budget store will have made 24 closures this year. A Scottish Poundland store is set to close in just under a month. The budget retailer recently announced another three store closures following its sale earlier this year. ‌ Among the list was the Inverclyde branch in Port Glasgow, based in the Gallagher Shopping Park, with reports saying that it is set to close its doors on Sunday, August 10. ‌ According to the Sun, the discounted retailer will also be closing down its Stratford-upon-Avon store on Bridge Street next week on July 21, while its Whitby store is set to close on September 3. ‌ With the latest three store closure announcements, it will bring the total Poundland stores closed to 24 this year, with the firm also confirming its branches in St Mark's Place, Newark and another in Pontypool, would be closing. News of Poundland's closures come after the struggling firm was sold in a £1 deal to investment firm Gordon Brothers, the former owners of British fashion company Laura Ashley. The firm was put up for sale earlier this year in March, with its then owner the Pepco Group auctioning of the brand following a slump in sales over the past year. ‌ Restructuring plans would see the discounted retailer, which operates around 800 branches, close up to 68 stores, with a further 150 at risk, reducing its portfolio to between 650 to 700 stores. First opened in 1990, Poundland now offers it customers a selection of products that includes household goods, food, clothing and beauty items. ‌ However, its new owners are said to have proposed a range of changes that would see it remove frozen food products at stores where they're currently sold, stopping selling products on its website, and providing more seasonal and womenswear ranges. Poundland isn't the only retailer to be struggling this year, we recently reported that Claire's Accessories was also potentially considering a sale after it had to draft in advisors to help with a rescue plan to pay a loan due next year. ‌ The beloved jewellery retailer, which is primarily marketed towards the younger generation, hired experts from Interpath as it is currently facing an outstanding loan worth $480million (£355million) that needs to be repaid in December 2026. While no announcement regarding closures has been made, Interpath's appointment has brought into question the possibility of potential sweeping store closures and the chain pulling out of some countries entirely as it "seeks to dramatically rein in costs." 'I tried the ‘Dubai chocolate game-changer' shoppers can get for less than £3'

The TikTok food sensation is not going away but there's a way to get one of the best Dubai chocolate treats for a fraction of the usual price Dubai chocolate remains one of the big foodie trends of 2025, with a host of retailers launching tempting shoppers to try new takes on the pistachio-laden TikTok favourite. Quintessentially British foodie firm Cartwright & Butler might not seem the most obvious home for the phenomenon, with the five-generation strong family firm famed for shortbread, fruitcakes and other classic teatime treats. But they have launched their own take on the trend in Pistachio Dubai Style Truffles and savvy shoppers can pick up a stylish tin of the treats, which usually cost £18, for less than £3 using a little-known money saving hack. Money-saving website TopCashback offers all new members a free £15 signup bonus for any purchase over £15 alongside a percentage cashback on spends from any qualifying website, including Cartwright & Butler. This means shoppers can effectively snag a tin of the treats for £2.85 after cashback is paid. Chocoholics on social media praise Dubai chocolate for its mix of gooey pistachio cream with crunchy knafeh, also known as kadayif - or finely shredded filo pastry - which pairs with the chocolate to make the ultimate crunchy yet creamy taste. The hype around the foodie sensation has sparked huge interest from British shoppers and the trend is definitely going anywhere yet, with several other brands joining Cartwright & Butler in launching pistachio-heavy treats this month. Bakery Cutter and Squidge have unveiled a reimagining of one of their best-sellers, Dubai chocolate biskies . Usually £28.99, a box of six is currently reduced to £21.75 and can be ordered for delivery nationwide. The brand's signature sweet treat, a biskie is a cross between a cake and a cookie and this version includes velvety pistachio cream sandwiched between rich chocolate layers and is a moreish but delicious take on the trend. Elsewhere, Tesco shoppers can also pick up a pack of biscuit brand Fox's limited edition take on the viral sensation for £2.65 in their weekly shop from this weekend - with Foodtok fans already pointing them out in stores. Available nationwide for the next six weeks, the Dubai style pistachio cream chocolate biscuits have a buttery cocoa shortcake base, a nutty interior and are layered with crumbled biscuit to get a knafeh-style crunch. As someone who has always loved pistachio, I have a personal as well as professional interest in the rise of all these nut-laden treats since Dubai chocolate became a social media sensation. I've also tried plenty of them along the way, ranging from Lindt's Dubai style offering to M&S' Big Daddy Pistachio bar through to more authentic options picked up from Harrods' food hall on a recent trip to London. These Cartwright and Butler truffles are so new out that, despite them launching on Moonpig , Amazon and the brand's website directly, there are no customer reviews available yet. However, after I spotted Good Housekeeping describing them as a 'Dubai chocolate game-changer' I had to give them a try, alongside several other pistachio-themed treats, and I wasn't disappointed. Cartwright and Butler are my go-to for foodie gifts, especially at Christmas, when their mix of great flavours and beautiful tins and presentation makes them well-priced options that look luxe without breaking the bank. These truffles tick both boxes in exactly the same way and are the perfect gift option for the chocoholic in your life. Some recent takes on Dubai chocolate get the ratios wrong, with Lindt being the perfect example. While shoppers have snapped up the bars in their thousands, to the extent the brand had to impose a two-bar limit on online sales, some fans have complained the bars are too thin to get a real taste of the pistachio creme sandwiched between layers of chocolate. Cartwright and Butler's truffles , in comparison, have a thick coating of chocolate outside but are densely packed with knafeh and pistachio inside, giving them a flavourful and crunchy kick that makes them one of my favourite pistachio treats of the year - and a new gifting option for friends and family, especially as something a bit different for Christmas. How to get Cartwright and Butler's Dubai Truffles tin for less than £3 Sign up as a new member via the TopCashback website to claim the £15 bonus. Search for Cartwright and Butler and click 'Get Cashback Now'. Shop and check out as usual. Cashback will then track and appear in shoppers' TopCashback accounts within seven working days of purchase. The cashback will become payable and available to withdraw and spend after Cartwright and Butler has paid TopCashback the commission for the purchase.

UK spent up to €9m keeping Irish pensioners warm last winter

More than 26,000 pensioners in Ireland received fuel allowance payments from the British government last year, worth up to €9 million, new figures have revealed. Individuals in receipt of a UK state pension are eligible for the annual Winter Fuel Payment, regardless of where they live. Those aged under 80 receive £200 (€231), while older pensioners are paid £300 (€346). Advertisement A total of 34,300 recipients were located outside the United Kingdom last year – more than 76 per cent of whom were living in Ireland, according to data released by the British Department of Work and Pensions under freedom of information laws. The payments were worth between €6 million and €9 million, depending on the rate of allowance payable in each case. The country with the next-highest number of residents in receipt of a British state pension was Germany, where 2,190 were paid the fuel allowance last winter. Another 1,630 lived in Italy, and 780 were in Bulgaria. The number of Irish recipients fell by around 5.5 per cent last year after eligibility rules changed, linking the allowance to other benefits paid to those on low incomes, such as pension credit. Advertisement However, the British government rowed back on this decision following criticism by charities, unions and MPs; and universal eligibility has been restored for this winter – although those earning more than £35,000 (€40,410) will have the payment clawed back through taxation. The 26,230 individuals who received the British Winter Fuel Payment in Ireland last year included Irish citizens who previously worked in the UK, making them eligible for the British state pension – often in addition to the Irish state pension. They also include British citizens who may have relocated here. Unlike its UK counterpart, the Irish fuel allowance benefit is means-tested and payable only to pensioners earning less than €524 a week. If they also receive the British Winter Fuel Payment, this is assessed as income in the means test.
