‘One side will lose face' in Bayern-Sane stand-off, says Matthaus

Qatar Tribune19-05-2025

Berlin: Lothar Matthaus believes Bayern Munich have a major dilemma over whether to try to retain Germany winger Leroy Sane. Bayern left the 29-year-old at the bottom of the queue for new contracts, with his deal running out on June 30, but offered him terms to stay until 2028. Sane was expected to sign but then switched agents to well-known tough negotiator Pini Zahavi. Since then, there has been an impasse. 'Bayern have repeatedly emphasized the need to cut salaries. Based on what they've said publicly, Bayern shouldn't offer Sane more money, or they'll lose face. Someone will lose face,' 1990 World Cup winner Matthaus said in his column for Sky on Monday.
'A lot has gone wrong in Bayern's public handling of the situation,' Matthaus judged. 'Football-wise, financially and personally, a separation would be a loss for the club,' Matthäus added. (dpa)

Talent Bischof raring to go as he names Bayern move ‘perfect match'

dpa Orlando, Florida Teenager Tom Bischof has named his move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich 'a perfect match' and does not mind being compared to Bayern and Germany great Joshua Kimmich. The 19-year-old Bischof arrived on a free transfer from Hoffenheim and could make his debut on Sunday in their Club World Cup opener against Auckland City in Cincinnati. That would be a week after he got his first minutes for the senior national team in the Nations League match for third place against France, underlining his meteoric rise over the past months. Bischof said at his official presentation at Bayern's camp in Florida that he has been a life-long Bayern fan, and happy to play at the Club World Cup instead of the under-21 Euros in Slovakia. 'We are together here for a month. Of course the U21 Euros are something great. (But) I want to find my feet in the team, produce great performances and win trophies. I'm raring to go,' he said. Bischof said that other clubs were also interested in him but that 'the talks with (board member for sport) Max Eberl, (sporting director) Christoph Freund and also (coach) Vincent Kompany were very good. The system of play suits me very well.' Freund named Bischof 'a really talented player' who 'suits FC Bayern very well with the way he plays.' Bischof joins an already crowded Bayern midfield where he will be competing with fellow German internationals Leon Goretzka and Aleksandar Pavlovic as well as Portugal's João Palhinha for playing time alongside national team captain Kimmich. Bischof has been compared to Kimmich by the likes of 1990 World Cup winner and ex-Bayern great Lothar Matthäus. 'I have heard the comparison a few times. Jo is an outstanding footballer. I look up to him. And I do believe that our style is similar. But of course I want to play together with him in the centre (of midfield),' Bischof said.

Matthaus: Sane should be at World Cup if he delivers for Galatasaray

dpa Berlin Former Germany and Bayern Munich captain Lothar Matthaus has welcomed Leroy Sane's move to Galatasaray and believes he has a good chance of retaining his place in the national team and playing at the 2026 World Cup if he delivers for the Istanbul club. 'It is up to Leroy: If he performs for Gala in the league and in the Champions League as well he has a very good chance to play at the World Cup,' Matthäus told Saturday's Bild paper. Germany winger Sane, 29, joined Turkish domestic double winners Galatasaray in mid-week on a three-year contract on a free transfer after five seasons at Bayern Munich. Matthaus, who led Germany to the 1990 World Cup title, spoke of a 'super' transfer for Sané and a big statement by Galatasaray. 'Galatasaray have ambitions, a big budget, Turkish football has become stronger, the time of scandals is over,' he said. He praised 'super stadiums' in Turkey, and good coaches 'who have brought calm to the clubs.' Matthäus said that Sané never had this kind of standing in Munich which resulted in renewal talks collapsing because the club wanted him to accept a pay cut. 'The club didn't really want to keep him. While other players got considerably more money in their renewals, Bayern went on the salary brakes with him,' Matthäus said. 'Bayern never really fought for Sané.'

Gattuso likely to become Italy coach

dpa Rome Former World Cup winner Gennaro Gattuso is reportedly close to becoming Italy national team coach in succession of Luciano Spalletti. Sky Italia reported that a meeting between Gattuso and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Gabriele Gravina went well, and that the deal could be finalised next week. The report said that Gattuso would receive a one-year contract in his first engagement as a national team coach. He will be tasked to lead the Azzurri to next year's World Cup, after the team failed to qualify for the last two editions in 2018 and 2022. Spalletti had to go after last week's 3-0 defeat against Norway in their first qualifier. He oversaw a 2-0 win over Moldova on Monday in his final match. Italy are nine points behind leaders Norway but have played two games less. Only the group winner qualifies directly. Former midfielder Gattuso, 47, won the 2006 World Cup with Italy as a player, and many more titles during his 13 years at AC Milan 1999-2012, including two Champions Leagues and two Serie A titles. As a coach, he has been in charge of clubs including Milan, Napoli, Olympique Marseille and last Hajduk Split, winning the Coppa Italia with Napoli in 2020. The FIGC had originally aimed to sign veteran Claudio Ranieri but he turned the offer down. Another contender, former Milan coach Stefano Pioli, is close to signing at Fiorentina. Fabio Cannavaro and Daniele de Rossi were reportedly other candidates while other prominent Italian coaches such as Carlo Ancelotti (Brazil, Antonio Conte (Napoli) and Massimiliano Allegri (Milan) were not available.
