Pep Guardiola comment spells trouble for Arsenal star after Mikel Arteta praise
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane, who previously worked with Mikel Arteta during his time at Manchester City Leroy Sane was described as the best winger in the world by Pep Guardiola during his time at Manchester City. Arsenal have reportedly stepped up their interest in Sane, with the Bayern Munich forward set to be available on a free transfer. The 29-year-old was widely expected to sign a lower-salary contract with Bayern, but a change of agent led Sane to weigh up his options elsewhere. The Telegraph has reported that Arsenal subsequently made enquiries and have emerged with an interest in the former Man City star, who previously worked with Gunners boss Mikel Arteta during his time in Manchester. It is an important summer transfer window for Arsenal as the club aim to win the Premier League next season for the first time since the 2003-04 campaign. However, though Sane may improve the Gunners, Guardiola's praise for the Germany international in a City shirt could spell trouble for Gabriel Martinelli's spot in the side. When asked whether Sane could play as a striker, Guardiola replied: 'Playing in the middle he can do it,' he said in February 2019. 'But I think he's better out wide. 'I'm not saying he can't (play in middle) but at the moment we have better players to do that job. But Leroy is best playing in the world out wide. I'd prefer to use him where he is strongest, he's an incredible player.' Arsenal have identified signing a new striker as a priority, while Raheem Sterling's return to Chelsea also opens up squad space for a new winger. Given Guardiola's comments, Sane would be best suited out wide. Bukayo Saka is an undisputed starter for Arsenal on the right, meaning Sane's arrival would threaten Martinelli's space on the opposite flank. It has been five years since Sane left City for Bayern. He scored 11 goals and registered six assists in 30 league games as the German side reclaimed the Bundesliga title last month. During his four-year spell in England, Sane won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, and two League Cups. For the majority of his time at City, Sane worked with current Arsenal boss Arteta, who was part of Guardiola's coaching staff. The winger has praised Arteta's influence on his career on multiple occasions, including when the Gunners faced Bayern in the Champions League in April 2024. "It was great. I was really pleased to work with him because he helped me a lot at Manchester City," Sane admitted. "We had a lot of individual talk about how I can improve my game. What are my weaknesses and strengths? "Through him, I made quick, huge improvements because of the ideas he gave to me. I still keep them in my mind. If it's about positioning, how I have to behave in certain situations, so I'm pleased for that." In an early phase of Arteta's reign at Arsenal, Sane backed his former coach to be a success. 'I can just say positive things about Mikel Arteta,' Sane told The Independent in July 2020. 'Since we started working together, he helped me a lot on the pitch. 'He tried to improve my football; he told me what I did good and what I did wrong, and he tried to work on it. Next to Pep, they both really helped me and improved me, to bring me to the next level. 'Even now, at Arsenal, for me you can see he's doing a great job. You can see he has a concept, a way that he wants to play, a way that he wants his team to play, and obviously it will take some time until everybody really understands it. I think he will do a great job as a [head] coach too.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Tottenham 'confident' of beating Arsenal and Chelsea to sign £54m winger
Tottenham are growing confident of beating Arsenal and Chelsea to sign Leroy Sane on a free transfer from Bayern Munich this summer, according to reports. Sane looked on course to sign a new contract with Bayern this month before he opted to switch his representation to Pini Zahavi's agency. The Germany international's salary demands have now increased and Bayern have been unable to reach an agreement with the winger. Bayern now face the prospect of losing their £54.8 million signing from Manchester City on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of June. Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham are all in the running to sign Sane if he rejects Bayern and decides to leave the Bundesliga champions as a free agent this summer. But according to FootMercato, Spurs are 'growing in confidence' that they will win the race to sign Sane. The report adds that Sane also has offers from Turkey and the Saudi Pro League and he has not made a decision over his future at Bayern. Speaking this week, Germany's World Cup and European Championship winner, Lothar Matthaus, urged Bayern not to let Sane go 'under any circumstances'. 'There's no need for a spectacular new signing just because Florian Wirtz's transfer didn't work out,' Matthaus told SportBild. More Trending 'For the spectacle, you have Olise on the right, and Musiala at number 10. And on the left, I'd plan on Sane. For me, he's a player I wouldn't let go under any circumstances. 'When a player leaves on a free transfer, then – to put it bluntly – it really annoys Bayern. 'But that's not the only reason I'd extend his contract. It's because of Leroy's quality. He also has good contact with Kompany and is in the same league as Olise, Davies, and Musiala. That atmosphere in a team is important. 'Whether he then works more or less backward is not crucial. I would extend Sane's contract. There's no need for a top signing on the wing if Sane extends.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Leroy Sane given new contract offer as Arsenal target free transfer
Leroy Sane will be out of contract with Bayern Munich on June 30 and Arsenal are said to be among the clubs eyeing a swoop for the former Manchester City winger Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Leroy Sane on a free transfer, but Bayern Munich are hoping to persuade the winger to sign a new deal. Sane will be out of contract on June 30 and has yet to make a decision about his future. Arsenal are in the market for attacking reinforcements this summer and the club's co-chairman, Josh Kroenke, has vowed to back Mikel Arteta in the transfer market. "We plan to invest to get behind winning and doing better next season," Kroenke said. "We're delighted we have our sporting director, Andrea [Berta], who will play an important role in this. He is part of a unified and strong team, supported by the board, who are crystal clear on exactly what we need to do and the way in which we want to do it. The right way. The Arsenal way." And according to a report from Sky Germany, Arsenal are among the clubs eyeing a move for Sane. The 29-year-old has plenty of Premier League experience, having won the title twice during his time at Manchester City. He also worked with Arteta at City, with the Gunners boss spending more than three years at the Etihad as Pep Guardiola's assistant. However, the report states that Bayern have now tabled an improved contract offer in a bid to persuade Sane to stay. Sane's agent, Pini Zahavi, was recently seen having dinner with Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl and said: "We had a very good dinner, it was a nice dinner, I enjoyed it. But no news. I cannot speak about it, but it was a nice meeting." The report adds that Bayern have offered Sane a 'slightly higher fixed salary' than their previous contract offer, which would have seen the forward earn around €10m (£8.4m) plus €5.5m (£4.6m) in bonuses. "We have a very good relationship with his old and new management," Eberl said earlier this month. "It was surprising for us. We'll see what happens. We thought it was so close. But we'll see, we'll speak to each other. "Our wish is to extend Leroy's contract, we've communicated that to him. But we have our limits. If the limits are exceeded, then it will be very difficult. Let's see what happens. Until the deal is finalized, nothing can be said. "We have a clear idea and thought we were on the right track. Of course, we're talking to the new agency. There's no bad blood; the players are free to make their own decisions. "Leroy's performances in recent weeks have been very good; he's shown that he's committed to Bayern Munich. We hope he will extend, and if not, we'll move on as well.

'We had a lot of individual talks about how I can improve, strengths, my weaknesses, we worked a lot. I made huge improvements under him, he gave that to me. LEIPZIG, GERMANY – MAY 03: Leroy Sane of Bayern München controls the ball during the Bundesliga match between RB Leipzig and FC Bayern München at Red Bull Arena on May 03, 2025 in Leipzig, Germany. (Photo by) Will Sane Be A Decent Fit For Tottenham Hotspur? Sane has got the pace to cause a lot of headaches for his marker out in the wide areas. He can strike the ball with power from long range and can engineer some decent chances for his teammates to find the back of the net. Advertisement However, the Germany international has to find a way to be more consistent with his productivity in the final third. Sane already knows the Premier League well from his time at Manchester City and won't take much time to adjust to life at Tottenham. He is primarily a right-winger but can also fill in as a left-sided wide player or play in the number ten position if required. We can expect the German talent to bring more firepower to Ange Postecoglu's attack. He has what it takes to nail down a regular first-team spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season.
