SOMA GOLD ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT TO ACQUIRE THE ESCONDIDA MINE IN ANTIOQUIA, COLOMBIA

SOMA GOLD ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT TO ACQUIRE THE ESCONDIDA MINE IN ANTIOQUIA, COLOMBIA

Cision Canada07-07-2025
La Escondida Mine
The La Escondida Mine is a legal small-scale operation with a full set of permits, including a PTO, environmental, and explosives permit. There are two winzes into the main Escondida vein and a small informal mill on the property. The site is accessed via a gravel road from Zaragosa or Cáceres, Colombia. The road is suitable for truck access, with a travel time of approximately 1.5 hours from the site to the El Limón Mill in Zaragosa.
The Escondida vein has been traced for 800 meters along strike to the northeast and down-dip for approximately 135 meters. The vendor has mined 200 meters of strike length down to a vertical depth of 105 meters. The mine was developed in 5-meter levels, most of which have been backfilled. The mine produces 10-20 tonnes of ore per day at approximately 9.0 g/t Au, which reflects the mill's current capacity.
The vein is 15-50 cm thick but is accompanied by a 1.0-3.0 meter thick clay alteration package that is also variably mineralized. The style of veins, alteration, and sulphide mineralization is consistent with an intermediate sulphidation epithermal vein system. The host rock is a competent intermediate to felsic intrusive rock.
The geometry of the vein, known strike-length, and gold tenor of the current production suggest that the Escondida vein is likely to contain a significant quantity of gold. However, there has never been a drilling program to sample the strike extent of the Escondida vein. An initial 2,500-meter drill program would rapidly determine the strike and down-dip extent of the Escondida Vein and begin to quantify a NI 43-101-compliant gold resource outside on the La Escondida property. In addition to the main vein that is currently being mined, at least five other veins are known on the tenement from illegal surface workings and prospecting.
Regional, coarse-scale geophysics indicates that the vein-hosting structures extend on the property to the northeast and southwest. Additional quartz veins are known from illegal surface mining, but the tenement has never been systematically explored. An exploration program, including geological mapping, prospecting, and soil sampling, will be conducted to evaluate the entire project area for additional gold mineralization.
The purchase price is US$3 million, payable in tranches of US$1 million at closing, US$500,000 on the first anniversary, US$500,000 on the second anniversary, and US$1 million on the third anniversary. Soma will also pay a 0.5% NSR on all gold produced from the site. The NSR can be purchased at any time for a one-time payment of US$750,000.
Geoff Hampson, Soma's CEO, states, "The purchase of the Escondida Mine aligns with our strategy to grow production from our operations in Antioquia. Soma will invest in operational improvements to quickly increase production at Escondida to 40-50 tonnes per day. The ore will be trucked to the El Limón Mill for processing. The average grade at Escondida is higher than the grades of ore from the Cordero and Aurora mines, which are currently being stockpiled at El Limón. As such, Escondida ore will increase the average head grade at the mill. Preliminary geological work on the vein structure indicates the potential for a significant addition to Soma's resource. A drilling program is planned for Q3 2025 to test the indicated 800 meters of strike, the vein extension at depth, and an additional vein on the property. It is anticipated that these results will support the inclusion of additional resources in the NI 43-101 Technical Report Update scheduled for early 2026."

Birkenstock, Bugaboo, Coach thrive as rich Americans absorb hikes

LONDON, U.K.: For now, America's wealthier consumers appear unfazed by price increases on high-end products, from Birkenstock sandals to Bugaboo strollers, even as tariffs and economic uncertainty push brands to raise prices. German footwear brand Birkenstock has seen "tremendously strong" demand since introducing higher prices on July 1 to offset U.S. import tariffs, CEO Oliver Reichert told analysts this week. "We saw no pushback or cancellations," he said. The resilience mirrors trends across several premium brands. Bugaboo, the Dutch maker of strollers, high chairs, and playpens retailing for more than US$1,000, raised prices by $50 to $300 in May. "In general, we did not see any pushback," said Jeanelle Teves, Bugaboo's chief commercial officer for North America, noting retailers were "open and accepting" of the changes. Coach handbags have also remained popular, with parent company Tapestry reporting 4.6 million new North American customers this year, many from Gen Z and millennial demographics. CEO Joanne Kuvoiserat said the brand expects to maintain profit margins despite tariff pressures. Ralph Lauren likewise raised its annual revenue forecast as shoppers snapped up items like its $398 Polo Bear sweaters. However, CEO Patrice Louvet cautioned that price sensitivity in the second half remains a key unknown. Bank of America data supports the picture of steady luxury spending. The bank reported that middle—and upper-income cardholders spent more in July than a year earlier, even as spending by lower-income customers stayed flat. The bank noted that lower-income households account for only 15 percent of U.S. consumer spending, meaning overall demand could remain strong if higher-income spending holds up. However, some signs of caution are emerging. Procter & Gamble, maker of Tide detergent, noted that even wealthier consumers are becoming more selective in their purchases. Bugaboo manufactures in China and sells through retailers including Target, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale's, as well as smaller independent stores. Coach's popular Tabby shoulder bag sells for $350, while Ralph Lauren's luxury apparel continues to command high prices. As brands watch the second half of the year unfold, the big question remains whether affluent shoppers will keep absorbing price hikes or begin to pull back in the face of a "broader pricing environment," Louvet said.

1 Stock Down 40% This Year to Buy and Hold

Key Points Novo Nordisk's shares have been trending downward due to clinical setbacks and underwhelming results. However, the company has some potential catalysts on the way that could jolt its stock price. Novo Nordisk looks attractive given its lineup and pipeline, especially at current levels. 10 stocks we like better than Novo Nordisk › Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) first earned U.S. approval for its now-famous weight management medicine Wegovy in June 2021. That marked the beginning of a strong run for the company on the stock market. However, the Denmark-based drugmaker has given up most of these gains over the past year; the stock is down by 40% since January alone. Despite its recent misfortunes, Novo Nordisk's shares could still deliver strong returns to patient investors. Here's why. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » NVO Total Return Level data by YCharts. The weight management opportunity Novo Nordisk primarily develops medicines for diabetes and, in recent years, weight management. Its stock has plunged over the past year because its financial results haven't been as impressive as the market had hoped. It also faced some clinical setbacks, while its biggest rival in its core markets, Eli Lilly, earned some important wins. However, there's more to the story. The market for anti-obesity medications could grow at an incredibly rapid rate. Some analysts estimate that it will be worth $150 billion by 2035, compared to $15 billion last year. Novo Nordisk still has one of the deepest pipelines in the industry. In fact, it's challenging to find a company other than Eli Lilly that has more promising products. Recently, Novo Nordisk expanded its pipeline through various licensing deals. Here's one more thing that recently broke its way: Eli Lilly's oral GLP-1 candidate, orforglipron, did not perform nearly as well as expected in a phase 3 study. This opens the door for Novo Nordisk to catch up to its longtime rival. The company's oral version of Wegovy is currently awaiting approval from regulators in the U.S. The oral version led to an average weight reduction of 13.6% in a phase 3 clinical trial, slightly higher than the 12.4% that orforglipron recently posted in its late-stage study. While it's always hard to compare across clinical trials, the data at the very least suggests that oral Wegovy is comparable to orforglipron -- but only the former drug is closing in on approval. Novo Nordisk also has yet another promising anti-obesity candidate in phase 3 studies, amycretin, which the Denmark-based pharmaceutical giant is testing in both subcutaneous and oral formulations. Why is the race to develop an oral weight loss option so important? Pills are easier and cheaper to manufacture, store, and transport. So, compared to injectable weight loss therapies, oral versions would allow drugmakers to produce them more cost-effectively and to expand the reach of weight loss therapies. On top of that, some patients are strongly averse to needles. Because the current leading weight management drugs are administered subcutaneously, an oral option would likely take a decent share of the market. Novo Nordisk is likely to be first to market. And the company could follow up that win with another oral product in amycretin. The price is right Let's go back to Novo Nordisk's recent and disappointing financial results. In the first half of the year, revenue rose by 16% year over year to 154.9 billion Danish kroner ($24.2 billion), while net profit came in at 55.5 billion DKK ($8.7 billion). Perhaps that's not quite what the market expected to see, but these are still excellent results for a pharmaceutical giant -- most drugmakers of that size would be happy to grow their revenue at high-single-digit or low-double-digit rates. Meanwhile, the stock appears reasonably valued, trading at 13 times forward earnings, compared to the healthcare industry 's average of 16.2. What's the verdict? Novo Nordisk looks attractive at current levels, given the company's strong pipeline in weight management and a lineup that continues to deliver consistent profits. Despite recent setbacks, the stock is well-positioned to deliver excellent results over the long term. Should you invest $1,000 in Novo Nordisk right now? Duty-free shops facing ‘full-blown crisis' with no relief in sight

John Slipp is seen at his closed duty-free store, at the Canada-U.S. border crossing between Woodstock, N.B., and Houlton, Maine, on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Stephen MacGillivray John Slipp took over his father's duty-free store in 1994, which had been started more than a decade earlier. This month, he closed the Woodstock Duty Free Shop Inc. as lower traffic at the U.S.-Canada border dealt the final blow to a business already weakened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, at 59, Slipp says he will have to find another source of income and is advocating for more government support for stores like his. Fewer Canadians have been heading south in recent months in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war with Canada, his comments about annexing the country and because of fears among travellers about treatment at the border. In the duty-free industry, Slipp said less border traffic directly correlates to fewer sales. 'It was very difficult. The business had many good years. I certainly didn't want to be in the position of calling an end to a business career, giving up, calling it quits, both personally and in terms of my late father,' Slipp said. At the store's peak in the early 2000s, Slipp said there were about 15 people on staff. In March 2020, he said he laid off four people and reopened after the pandemic with two employees. Late in the summer of 2021, Slipp said duty-free stores were 'all starting from zero to rebuild again.' By the end of 2024, his business was still down about one-fifth from where it was in 2019. Then Trump returned to the White House. From January to April this year, things got worse for Slipp's store, and he ultimately decided to close based on declining sales and traffic numbers. 'Just realizing that even after the U.S. administration changes down the road, in our industry, we do not expect the border traffic to change overnight as a result of that. We believe it's going to take years,' he said. Recent figures from Statistics Canada noted that return trips from the U.S. dropped again in July as Canadians continue to shun travel to the U.S. The number of Canadian residents returning from the U.S. by automobile was down 36.9 per cent on an annual basis in July, marking the seventh consecutive month of year-over-year declines. Barbara Barrett, executive director of the Frontier Duty Free Association, said the stores her association represents have been feeling the decline in traffic for months. 'I would describe our industry as being in a full-blown crisis, and we've been saying that for a number of months now,' she said. Sales at duty-free stores have fallen between 40 and 50 per cent year-over-year across the country since late January, with some remote crossings reporting annual declines of up to 80 per cent, the association said. Barrett added that duty-free stores are often a microcosm of what is happening at the border. 'This should be our busy season during the summer, but it is not; it is pandemic-level traffic in the parking lots, and it has led to one store closing in the east. We are unfortunately afraid that we will likely see more closures as we draw to the end of the summer,' she said. Unlike airport stores, which are often owned by international companies, Barrett noted all of the land border stores are independently owned and are often family-run businesses. While Canadians shun U.S. trips, travel expert Claire Newell said many are opting for domestic and other international destinations. 'We live in a country where it's still very expensive to travel domestically. And while there are many people who are choosing to travel within Canada, we also see more people heading to popular destinations,' she said. She said she doesn't see Canadians changing their travel habits back to normal until there is a trade deal 'that feels fair.' As lower border traffic weighs on the industry, Barrett said she is advocating for 'small regulatory changes.' 'We have some taxes on our products that, believe it or not, in a tax- and duty-free industry that our U.S. competitors don't have. So we're asking for those to be changed so we can be more competitive,' she said. 'Also, we're asking to qualify for some of these tariff relief programs or pandemic-level supports along the lines of what they did during the pandemic with wage subsidy or rent subsidy.' Barrett said the government is the landlord for many duty-free stores and said a rent deferral or subsidy would help the industry until travel patterns normalize. She added that there have been conversations between her organization and senior government officials. Barrett said those officials agreed the association was putting forward 'small asks' to support the industry. An Aug. 2 release announcing the Woodstock Duty Free Shop's closure mentioned that the federal and provincial governments had promised tariff relief support programs to help businesses impacted by trade tensions. 'I pinned a lot of hopes on those when both levels of government made those announcements. I was reminded of the pandemic support programs,' Slipp said, adding that his business had benefited from such programs. His attention has now turned to advocating for rent deferral programs for duty-free shops renting land from either the federal government or from a bridge authority as well as loan programs for duty-free stores. When he looks at the future of the industry, he said the prospects 'are not bright.' 'I'm grieving the loss of my business, but I'm also accepting the reality that the business environment has changed and there is nothing in the bag of tricks that would suggest positive changes in this industry in the short to medium term,' Slipp said. 'I'm feeling bad that I was not able to succeed in the end and that I am having to lay to rest this business that my father and I have built and spent so many years working so hard on.' This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 17, 2025. Daniel Johnson, The Canadian Press
