Zico says Ancelotti just the man to take Brazil back to the top
Carlo Ancelotti's track record of getting the most out of Brazilian players makes him the best man to take the national team back to the top, football legend Zico told AFP.
The Italian Ancelotti has vowed to make five-time World Cup winners Brazil champions again next year after becoming the first non-Brazilian to coach the side in six decades.

He nurtured Brazilians such as Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid, helping to turn the 24-year-old from a figure of fun because of his inconsistent end product into one of the Spanish league's biggest stars.
Zico is one of the best players ever to pull on Brazil's iconic yellow shirt and believes Ancelotti's understanding and experience make him the ideal man for the job.
"Ancelotti played with Brazilian players, he has been a champion coach with Brazilian players at several teams and he's always praised Brazilian players and put them in a position to help him," Zico told AFP in Japan, where the 72-year-old is an adviser to J. League club Kashima Antlers.
"He has a great understanding, he loves football and his approach to football is very much in line with Brazilian thinking.

"So I think he can be successful for this reason, he can help Brazilian players thrive with his knowledge, his ability and his expertise."
At 65, Ancelotti has five Champions League titles under his belt and has managed the cream of Europe's clubs including Juventus, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
He is taking the reins of a national team for the first time and becomes Brazil's first foreign-born manager since 1965.
Zico says Brazilian coaches are no longer in vogue around the world, pointing to declining numbers of his compatriots in former hotspots like Africa, Saudi Arabia and Japan.

Zico, who has coached in several countries including Uzbekistan, Iraq and India, believes the Brazilian federation had little choice but to look overseas.
"Now is not a good time for Brazilian coaches, not just in Brazil but all over the world," he said.
"Now, when it comes to the Brazil team, if you're going to bring someone in, bring the best. As I see it, Brazil brought the best.
"For me he's the best, so I don't see anything to complain about."
Brazil have yet to clinch their place at next year's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and are currently fourth in the South American qualifying table.

Ancelotti is their fourth coach since Tite stepped down following the quarter-final loss to Croatia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Italian faces some tricky fixtures in World Cup qualifying, with games at Ecuador and Bolivia still to come.
But Zico believes Brazil can be one of the main contenders for the trophy if they avoid the unthinkable and book their place in the tournament.
"I think Brazil have a chance if Ancelotti manages to do a good job in the short time he has," he said.
"I think Brazil could become one of the contenders for the title. Why not? I don't see any team in the world today as favourites."

When it comes to electric vehicles, that horsepower number can get into the stratosphere. The number of high-output EVs is growing by the month, or so it seems. Even more mainstream EVs like the 2025 Kia EV6 can generate as much as 641 horsepower in Launch Control mode, even more than the Porsche 911 Turbo's 572 horsepower. That's impressive for an EV that costs less than $64,000, but what about the high-end, high-performance electric vehicles out there? How much power do they produce? Here are the six EVs with the highest horsepower figures in 2025. Prepare yourself to see some astounding numbers. Not so long ago, Lotus was making small gas-powered track cars with less than 400 horsepower. Today, the iconic British carmaker builds an electric hypercar, the Evija, with 1,972 horsepower. The Evija uses four electric motors-one for each wheel-delivering precise torque distribution and organ-crushing acceleration. The power output is aided by a light and rigid carbon fiber monocoque structure, and the Evija can sprint to 60 mph in under three seconds and top out at over 200 mph. Less focused on straight-line speed and more on track duties, the Evija is a nimble, track-carving hypercar that looks more exotic and powerful than anything the brand has ever built. At $2.3 million, only 130 of them will be made. Mate Rimac founded the eponymous Croatian electric supercar brand in 2009, and its greatest creation is a monster of an electric supercar with power exceeding even the most powerful gas-powered competitors. The Nevera has a 120kWh battery that powers four motors, one dedicated to each wheel, for a total of 1,914 horsepower. The Nevera can rocket to 60 mph in a mere 1.85 seconds and can claim a top speed of 258 mph. It also has advanced torque vectoring to maximize its handling capabilities. Only 150 units will be made, and our guess is that they're already spoken for, even at a price of over $2 million apiece. The renowned Italian design house, Pininfarina, is famous for designing some of the most iconic cars from Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati. Now, Pininfarina is creating its own cars that look to the future instead of the past. Case in point, the electric Battista, a luxury hyper-GT that blends Italian design with astronomical power. The Battista actually uses a powertrain developed in partnership with the aforementioned Rimac, and its quad-motor setup produces 1,900 horsepower. It can achieve a 0-60 mph time of less than two seconds and a top speed of 217 mph. Priced at $2.2 million, the car will only ever see 150 units built. Lucid Motors isn't just about building elegant EVs with airy cabins and cutting-edge technology. It also makes electric muscle that outdoes any luxury sedan made today. The Lucid Air Sapphire costs $250,000, and it has the firepower to back up that price. With 1,234 horsepower from its tri-motor powertrain, the Air Sapphire can easily claim to be one of the quickest production sedans in the world. 0-60 mph happens in under two seconds, meaning it can pretty much destroy everything else out there, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and the like. It also gets a ridiculous 427-mile range on a full charge. Your Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid can't do that, can it? Not far behind the Lucid Air Sapphire is Tesla's bad boy, the Model S Plaid ($94,990). Having roasted numerous exotic supercars in YouTube drag races, the Plaid is insane for what's essentially an electric family sedan. The 1,020 horsepower from its tri-motor setup means the Plaid can launch to 60 mph in 1.99 seconds and hit a top speed of 200 mph. To boot, the Plaid provides 348 miles of all-electric range and transports five adults in comfort. Even if someone wants to kick your Tesla out of hatred for Elon Musk, just mash the throttle and you'll be outta there in no time. The GMC Hummer EV ($99,045) is the return of the original Hummer and then some. This time around, it's a different kind of powerhouse-an electric pickup or SUV that moves with alacrity via a tri-motor setup producing up to 1,000 horsepower. The monolith of an EV can sprint from 0-60 mph in around three seconds, besting some of the quickest sports cars in the world. All this from a vehicle that weighs over 9,000 pounds is a Herculean achievement. The Hummer EV also comes standard with CrabWalk mode (which allows it to move diagonally) and adaptive suspension, making it way more agile than anything this size has a right to. The horsepower figures on this list would have been unthinkable just a decade ago, but EV technology has made it possible for cars, trucks, and SUVs to push the envelope of power. Each one of these vehicles meets or exceeds the 1,000-horsepower mark, and that's no joke. They're proof that electric vehicles are rewriting the rulebook for what's possible in automotive performance. More than just batteries and motors, these vehicles exhibit cutting-edge technology, innovative design, and, in many cases, a surprising degree of luxury and comfort. Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil exit from Real Madrid under FIFA investigation
By the time Carlo Ancelotti left Real Madrid, he had already been announced as the new Brazil manager. With the Italian's time up, and both Ancelotti and Real Madrid planning for the future in late April, a rather unusual situation occurred. Despite the radio silence from the club and the denials of Ancelotti, the Italian coach was in talks with Brazil over becoming their manager and Los Blancos had contacted Xabi Alonso about taking over. At the time Brazil were on the charm offensive, and intermediary Diego Fernandes was a consistent presence at the Santiago Bernabeu. FIFA open investigation into Diego Fernandes commission Fernandes, a Brazilian businessman who is close to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), but without an official role, was staying in Madrid in an attempt to broker a deal between Ancelotti and Brazil. When the deal was done, Fernandes was pictured with Ancelotti, and transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano cited him as 'taking care of talks'. As explained by Sport, FIFA have opened an investigation into the negotiation, and have demanded that the CBF explain the €1.2m commission paid to Fernandes. The Catalan daily explain that he was contracted by the CBF, and his name features in Ancelotti's contract. Fernandes is not a registered agent The crux of the issue is that Fernandes is not a registered FIFA agent, and thus was not permitted to approach Ancelotti on Brazil's behalf. Sport quote information from UOL Esporte, who say that FIFA have demanded explanations from the CBF by the 4th of June, the day before Ancelotti's Brazil debut against Ecuador. They will play away in Quito against Ecuador, and then host Paraguay the following week. The former occupy second spot in the South American qualifying table, and have lost just twice. Meanwhile Paraguay are a spot behind Brazil, and level on points. They have not lost under current manager Gustavo Alfaro, beating Argentina in November. Ancelotti has just a year to get Brazil in shape to challenge for the World Cup next summer.

New Zealand swears in new deputy prime minister
SYDNEY (Reuters) -David Seymour, leader of the libertarian ACT New Zealand party, was sworn in as deputy prime minister on Saturday, taking the role from Winston Peters in a deal struck when the three-party coalition government was formed in 2023. His party was behind last year's controversial move to enshrine a narrower interpretation of the Treaty of Waitangi that it says discriminates against non-Indigenous citizens, though the bill failed in parliament. Seymour was appointed in a ceremony at Auckland's Government House, a spokesperson told Reuters. ACT New Zealand is the junior partner in the centre-right ruling coalition that also includes the Peters-led New Zealand First and the National Party, led by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. In parliament since 2014, Seymour will retain the role of regulation minister, tasked to assess rules in the Pacific nation of 5.3 million and keep the position of associate minister of health, finance, and education. Seymour has also driven efforts to legalise euthanasia, voted to legalise abortion in 2020 and attended a pro-Hong Kong democracy protest in Auckland in 2019. ACT New Zealand wants a smaller role for government and a bigger role for free markets, it says on its website.
