AI arms race? Islamic world to forge path in Tehran
Shafaq News/ Islamic countries are expected to adopt their first joint strategy on artificial intelligence (AI) during a ministerial summit in Tehran later this month, Iran's Science, Research, and Technology Minister, Hossein Simaei-Sarraf, said on Monday.
The meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC-15) Dialogue Platform, scheduled for May 18-20, will focus on aligning scientific and technological policies across member states, with a particular emphasis on AI.
In March, 53 member states of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) endorsed the Riyadh Charter for Artificial Intelligence during the Global AI Summit in Saudi Arabia, outlining ethical and strategic principles for AI development rooted in Islamic values and sustainable development goals.
Iran has positioned itself at the forefront of AI research among Islamic countries. According to Web of Science data, Iran ranks first in neural network technologies and multi-agent systems, and second in broader fields such as machine learning and robotics.
Officials said the Tehran summit would build on the Riyadh Charter and marks a step toward establishing a coordinated approach to AI governance across the Islamic world.

He further encouraged investment in AI innovation centers and called for greater cooperation between universities and the tech sector, urging the Kurdish youth to actively participate in what he called a global revolution.

Iraq, China partner for first nuclear training reactor
Shafaq News/ Iraq is preparing to sign an agreement with China's Atomic Energy Authority, marking the construction of its first nuclear training reactor, the head of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission and Minister of Higher Education, Naeem al-Aboudi, announced on Sunday. In a press conference, al-Aboudi described the facility as a subcritical reactor intended for academic and research purposes. The project aims to build the capabilities of students and researchers in nuclear physics and peaceful radiation technologies. 'This is a milestone for Iraq's scientific infrastructure and a step toward restoring our nuclear research capacity on peaceful terms,' he stated. Al-Aboudi also confirmed that three sites at the Al-Tuwaitha complex, southeast of Baghdad, have been declared free of radioactive contamination. These include the French LAMA laboratories, an Italian-built radioisotope production facility, and the Tammuz-2 research reactor. Radiation surveys were carried out using rigorous scientific methods, with results showing no traces of hazardous radioactive material.

Older iPhones, Androids lose WhatsApp access
Shafaq News/ WhatsApp will stop working on several older smartphones beginning Sunday, June 1, according to Meta, the app's parent company. The update, initially planned for May 5, was postponed for several weeks before June 1 was confirmed as the final rollout date. Starting Sunday, WhatsApp will only be compatible with iPhones running iOS 15.1 or later and Android devices operating on version 5.1 or newer. Affected models include the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. Some reports have also indicated that support may be discontinued for the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and the first-generation iPhone SE. These devices, however, can still receive updates up to iOS 15.8.4, which enables their continued access to WhatsApp as long as the software is kept up to date.
