Ahead of I-Day, Chandigarh Police bust inter-state arms, drug racket, four arrested
The arrested accused have been identified as Ajit Singh, Amar Singh, Shamshad Ali and Rishab Dev. Police have recovered 1.790kg of charas, 53.90gm heroin and one pistol and one country-made desi katta from the possession of the accused. Police said a gang war has been averted by arresting an active member and sharp shooter of Harpreet, alias Happy Gang. Kingpins of the gangs are managing criminal activities in Punjab and Chandigarh from outside India, the police claimed.
One of the accused, Shamshad Ali, alias Jaggi, is a proclaimed offender wanted by Bassi Pathana police station in an attempt to murder and Arms Act cases. During the course of interrogation, accused Ajit Singh disclosed that he was working as a waiter in a Sector-11 hotel in Panchkula. There he came in touch with a drug peddler and started selling drugs in the tricity area. Police said that Ajit used to receive drugs from peddlers in Mandi and Kullu in Himachal Pradesh and distributed the drugs in local areas of tricity.
Police said accused Shamshad Ali also disclosed that he is an active member and sharp shooter of Harpreet, alias Happy Gang. Harpreet supplied him illegal weapons for further providing to other gang members active in the tricity area. Accused Shamshad Ali and his associate Gurjant Janta received weapons and drugs on the direction of Harpreet, who is operating the gang from Portugal. Police said accused Gurjant Janta is reportedly in Italy.
All the accused have been remanded to four days police custody.

Two women held for stealing newborn from hospital in MPs Sagar
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Sagar, Aug 14 (PTI) Two women were arrested for allegedly stealing a newborn on Thursday from a ward of the government run Bundelkhand Medical College and Hospital (BMC&H) in Sagar district in Madhya Pradesh, a police official said. The child has been rescued, additional superintendent of police Lokesh Sinha told PTI over phone. 'CCTV footage from the hospital showed a woman in a red sari carrying the infant. We traced her location to Karra Pur, about 15 km from the hospital. A bus was intercepted at Karra Pur area after learning that the woman with her accomplice had boarded it. The woman and her daughter in-law have been arrested. One of the women is 70 years old," he said. The accused have told police they stole the child since their family did not have a son, Sinha said. Somati Adivasi (25),who was admitted to BMC on August 8 and delivered on August 9, told reporters a woman was roaming in the ward since morning and took away the child. 'BMC & Hospital Dean Dr P S Thakur has formed a three-member inquiry committee in connection with the incident. A security guard on duty at the ward for 15 days is a suspect. Another guard who helped investigators to locate the child will be felicitated on Independence Day," the facility's Public Relation Officer Dr Sourabh Jain told PTI. The child was medically examined after being rescued and he is fine, officials added. State on alert for I-Day celebrations
Ranchi: State police headquarter has sounded a general alert across Jharkhand in order to ensure law and order during Independence Day celebrations on Friday. Police have also intensified operations in the extremists affected areas in this regard. Jharkhand police spokesperson and IG (operation) Michel Raj said, "The alert had been issued though there is no input related to any specific threat. The superintendents of police have been asked to take precautions to ensure peaceful celebrations. Additional forces have been sent to Ranchi and Dumka for state-level functions." Police have been asked to keep vigil at public places, including project sites, an official stated. Khunti sub-divisional police officer Varun Rajak said, "Anti-extremist operations have been held in view of the I Day celebrations. Police would conduct the exercise in the bordering and the sensitive areas of the district on Friday as well." Inspector general (South Chhotnagpur) Mamoj Kaushik said enhanced security would be in place around Morabadi ground with more CCTVs being set up for surveillance. The venue would also be surveyed by drones. Railway Protection Force is also on the vigil as they are checking the passengers and their bags before entry to the stations.
