Iran amputates hands of three 'thieves' in rare use of brutal Sharia law punishment

Daily Maila day ago
Iranian authorities have amputated the hands of three convicted 'thieves' in a rare use of the brutal Sharia law punishment.
The savage punishment, usually reserved for repeat offenders, was given to three men at Urmia Prison in the West Azerbaijan province, in northwest Iran, on Thursday at around 1am.
The men, described by Iran's judiciary website as 'professional thieves', were arrested between August 2017 and November 2019 and convicted in a 'grossly unfair' trial in which the court sentenced them to have four fingers on their right hands completely cut off.
They had 'more than 40 private plaintiffs across four provinces', the judiciary's Mizan website said.
'The sentence of hand amputation for three professional thieves with a history of multiple thefts was carried out in West Azerbaijan province', it added.
Mizan said the amputations had been carried out after Iran's top court upheld the sentences against the trio, and after they had not cooperated with 'many' attempts to negotiate the return of the stolen items.
The claimed that returning the stolen goods, mostly gold jewelry, would have allowed them 'to benefit from legal leniency and repentance'.
Amnesty's Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director Sarah Hashas said the amputations were 'based on 'confessions' obtained under torture and following grossly unfair trials'.
'They are a chilling reminder of the Iranian authorities' readiness to inflict irreversible suffering and that Iran's judicial system is a vital cog in the machinery of torture', she added.
The three men were sentenced to 'amputation of four fingers from the right hand from the base, so that the thumb remains' despite testimony that their confessions were extracted under torture, according to documents obtained by Iran Human Rights organisation (IHRNGO).
Since getting the gruesome sentence, all three had gone on multiple hunger strikes in prison to protest the inhumane conditions they have been subjected to, as well as their conviction.
IHRNGO Director, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said: 'The international community must not tolerate the implementation of medieval and degrading sentences like finger amputations in the 21st century.'
The Sharia-based penal code was introduced in Iran after the Islamic revolution of 1979.
It provides for amputation as a punishment for certain offences, although human rights groups have condemned its use as 'cruel' and 'inhumane'.
Last month Iranian authorities amputated the hands of two men who had been repeatedly convicted of theft.
According to the US-based Abdorrahman Boroumand Centre, Iranian authorities have amputated the fingers of at least 131 men since January 2000.

Videos of emaciated Israeli hostage Evyatar David released by Hamas

Why you can trust Sky News Two videos of an emaciated Israeli hostage, Evyatar David, have been released by Hamas, after US special envoy Steve Witkoff this week met with the families of the hostages. The now 24-year-old looks skeletal, with his shoulder blades protruding from his back, and says he has not eaten for three days. The distressing videos show him apparently digging his own grave. He worked in a restaurant, according to a video posted by Labour Friends of Israel, before he was abducted from the Nova music festival on 7 October 2023. Since then, he has been held in captivity in Gaza, and the videos suggest he is being kept in dark tunnels and surviving on scarce portions of lentils and beans. Gaza itself is suffering "man-made mass starvation" because of Israel's blockade on aid to the enclave, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has previously said. In the second video, released on Saturday, Mr David - according to the English subtitles - says: "I haven't eaten for three days." The captions continue as he speaks while in an underground tunnel: "There's no [sic] enough food. I barely get drinking water." The video shows him talking through what ate in July, which has been recorded on a handmade calendar hung up on the side of an underground Gaza tunnel. Speaking while under captivity and under duress, he adds: "They give me what they can get." At the end of the video, he is digging a hole. The subtitle reads: "This is the grave where I think I'm going to be buried in. Time is running out." He then appears to break down, crouching on the floor and leaning his head on his arm while still clinging to the shovel. In a statement, his family said: "We are forced to witness our beloved son and brother, Evyatar David, deliberately and cynically starved in Hamas's tunnels in Gaza - a living skeleton, buried alive. "Our son has only a few days left to live in his current condition." They added: "Israel and the international community must oppose Hamas's cruelty and ensure that our Evyatar immediately receives proper nutrition. "The intentional starvation, torture, and abuse of Evyatar for propaganda purposes violate even the lowest standards of humanitarian law and basic human decency." 'Famine' looms in Gaza On Friday, US special envoy Steve Witkoff visited a site where the US and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) has been distributing food in Gaza. The controversial GHF scheme has been widely condemned, including by the UK government, after fatal shootings ever since it was set up earlier this year. According to the United Nations' human rights office, at least 859 people have been killed "in the vicinity" of GHF aid sites since late May. The Israel Defence Forces has repeatedly said it "categorically rejects the claims of intentional harm to civilians" and has blamed Hamas militants for fomenting chaos and endangering civilians. Meanwhile, the UN's Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IFSPC) this week said a "worst-case scenario of famine" was sinking in across the besieged enclave. It has also said more than 20,000 children have been treated for acute malnutrition since April. Families of the 50 hostages still in Gaza are concerned they are also starving, and blame Hamas. On Saturday, Gaza's health ministry said a further seven Palestinians had died of malnutrition-related causes in the past 24 hours, including a child.

Hamas releases shocking video of Israeli hostage looking like a concentration camp victim after 664 days in captivity

Hamas has released a horrifying video of an emaciated Israeli hostage after 664 days in captivity - as his devastated family said he only has a few days left to live. Evyatar David's family approved the use of the terrorist organisation's video on Saturday, which shows him bare chested on a dirty mattress inside a tunnel in Gaza. He can be seen writing on a piece of paper on the wall and walking around in the tunnel which is just tall enough for him stand up. The video goes on to accuse Israel of starving not only Palestinians but Israeli hostages as well. The last proof of life from Evyatar, who was taken hostage from the Nova music festival during the October 7 attacks, was back in February. Then Hamas published a video of him and fellow hostage Guy Gilboa Dalal sitting inside a car as they watched other captives being released from Gaza. In a statement today, the David family said: 'We are forced to witness our beloved son and brother, Evyatar David, deliberately and cynically starved in Hamas's tunnels in Gaza - a living skeleton, buried alive. 'Our son has only a few days left to live in his current condition. Hamas is using our son as a live experiment in a vile hunger campaign. 'The deliberate starvation of our son as part of a propaganda campaign is one of the most horrifying acts the world has seen. He is being starved purely to serve Hamas's propaganda. 'Israel and the international community must oppose Hamas's cruelty and ensure that our Evyatar immediately receives proper nutrition.' The Instagram account 'Bring Evyatar Home' also posted on social media 'The Holocaust must end' as they shared the latest images of him. Meanwhile on Thursday, Islamic Jihad released a hostage video, showing a starved Rom Braslavski crying and begging for his life. Families of Israeli hostages criticised the shocking images of the hostages in Gaza. Speaking at a demonstration against the Israeli government on Saturday, the mother of hostage Matan Angrest said her son was too going through a Holocaust. 'I am the image of failure for the prime minister. I avoided using the word Holocaust until now, because I am a daughter of a Holocaust survivor,' Anat Angrest said. 'My father is going through a second Holocaust through his grandson. We see videos of the Holocaust in colour. 'The 2025 Holocaust is continuing and extending thanks to the Israeli government,' she added. Einav Zangauker, the mother of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker, said: 'In recent days, we saw the difficult videos of Rom and Evyatar from captivity. 'Our children are undergoing a Holocaust. Jews are becoming skin and bones because of political survival. 'If we don't free everyone now, they will not survive for much longer,' Zangauker said. She has repeatedly accused Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu of prolonging the war for his own political survival. The Hostage Forum in Israel also released a scathing statement following the images of Evyatar, appealing directly to both the Israeli and American governments. 'Look our loved ones – and us – in the eyes. The danger to their lives is tangible and immediate,' it read. 'The risk of losing those deceased is growing. This is the time for a comprehensive deal and an end to the war. 'No more delays. No more leaving them behind. Stop this nightmare and bring them out of the tunnels and home,' the forum said. Vicky Cohen, mother of hostage Nimrod Cohen, posted the word: 'Holocaust 2025' on X after seeing the video of David. Former hostage, Eliya Cohen, said that seeing the video of Evyatar took him back to the day a terrorist came to him and said: 'There's no more food, no more water, no more anything. 'You'll eat whatever is left of our food, because your people are starving us — so we'll starve you.' 'Don't get me wrong,' Cohen continued: 'I don't have an ounce of compassion for those sons of b******. 'But while we're being shredded in the global media, the people we're trying to target are sitting underground, and 90 percent of the time they're in the kitchen, trading maqluba recipes, dipping hummus.' Opposition Leader Yair Lapid meanwhile asked ministers in Netanyahu's government to 'watch the video of Evyatar before going to bed and try to fall asleep while thinking about Evyatar trying to survive in a tunnel.' Israel's Foreign Ministry said that Evyatar is known for his 'kind soul and musical talent. He dreams of traveling to Asia and studying music production.' US special envoy Steve Witkoff met with families of hostages in Tel Aviv on Saturday, where he stressed that the current plan is to end the war and not expand it. 'A majority of Israelis want the hostages at home, and a majority of Gaza's public wants the return of hostages because they want the rehabilitation of the Strip, Witkoff said. 'There is no victory without bringing everyone home; all of you have become part of my family.'
