Olympics-Russian teams remain banned from competing at 2026 Winter Games

Hindustan Times27-05-2025

PARIS, - Russian teams, including the country's powerful national ice hockey side, remain banned from competing at next year's Milano-Cortina winter Olympics as part of sanctions imposed following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the International Olympic Committee said on Tuesday.
The IOC was responding to reports out of Russia that hockey officials from the country had held talks with the international ice hockey federation over Olympic participation.
"The IOC Executive Board recommendation from March 2023 with regard to teams of athletes with a Russian passport remains in place," the IOC said.
"It is based on the fact that, by definition, a group of Individual Neutral Athletes cannot be considered a team. We take note that the IIHF has confirmed that it will follow this recommendation.
A small number of individual Russian and Belarusian athletes were allowed to take part in the Paris 2024 summer Olympics after rigorous vetting by the IOC.
They competed without the Russian or Belarusian flag and anthem. Instead they took part as neutral athletes. All Russian teams were banned. Belarus has acted as a staging ground for the invasion.
Four Russian figure skaters in men's and women's singles were recently approved by the International Skating Union to try to qualify for the 2026 Winter Olympics as neutral athletes.
Russian ice hockey players won gold at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and silver four years later in Beijing.
The IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee in October 2023 for recognising regional Olympic councils for Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine - Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
"This recommendation was made after consultations with the International Federations concerned and the other Olympic Movement stakeholders," the IOC said.
"This position reflects the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee because of its annexation of regional sports organisations on the territory of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine."
"Such action constitutes a breach of the Olympic Charter because it violates the territorial integrity of the NOC of Ukraine, as recognised by the IOC in accordance with the Olympic Charter," the Olympic body said.
The Winter Olympics in Italy run from February 6-22.

Tulsi Gabbard warns: ‘Elites, warmongers' are driving us toward nuclear doom

US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard issued a dire warning on Tuesday (June 10), claiming the world is closer to nuclear annihilation than ever before. The message came in a stark, three-minute video posted to her personal account on X, shortly after her visit to Hiroshima, Japan. 'I recently visited Hiroshima and stood at the epicenter of a city scarred by the unimaginable horror caused by a single nuclear bomb dropped in 1945,' Gabbard said in the video. 'What I saw, the stories I heard, and the haunting sadness that remains, will stay with me forever.' Tulsi Gabbard called out what she described as a reckless global drift toward nuclear conflict, driven by political elites and warmongers. 'This is the reality of what's at stake, what we are facing now,' she said. 'Because as we stand here today, closer to the brink of nuclear annihilation than ever before, political elite and warmongers are carelessly fomenting fear and tensions between nuclear powers.' Although Gabbard refrained from naming any specific nations, her message comes at a time of heightened nuclear anxieties involving Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea. Gabbard appeared to echo recent Russian narratives surrounding the war in Ukraine — a conflict the Trump administration has been trying to de-escalate. The video includes Gabbard touring Hiroshima landmarks and historical archive footage of the 1945 atomic bombings. 'A single nuclear weapon today could kill millions in just minutes,' Gabbard warned. Gabbard also suggested that political leaders may be less concerned about the consequences because they have access to exclusive protection. 'Perhaps it's because they are confident that they will have access to nuclear shelters for themselves and for their families that regular people won't have access to,' she said. 'We must reject this path to nuclear war.' In her closing appeal, Gabbard called on the public to act. 'We must reject this path to nuclear war and work toward a world where no one has to live in fear of a nuclear holocaust,' she said. 'Speak up and demand an end to this madness.'

Chicago Blackhawks trying to steal No. 1 pick in Michael Misa draft bombshell

Photo by Joe Hrycych/NHLI via Getty Images With the 2025 NHL Draft just around the corner, the Chicago Blackhawks find themselves in a familiar spotlight—rumored to be eyeing yet another bold move up the draft board. Over the past few seasons, general manager Kyle Davidson has made a habit of turning draft day into a high-stakes chess match, and it appears this year might be no different. According to several league insiders, the Blackhawks could be targeting standout prospect Michael Misa, a name frequently linked to the No. 1 overall pick. While nothing is confirmed, the timing, the history, and the pieces in place all point toward another potentially headline-grabbing maneuver. As fans brace for what could be another chaotic night at the draft, the question looms large—will Davidson pull the trigger? Inside the Chicago Blackhawks' wild draft history—and Why another big swing may be coming Back in June 2024, just after selecting Artyom Levshunov at the NHL Draft, the Chicago Blackhawks made a significant play for the No. 4 overall pick held by the Columbus Blue Jackets. According to The Athletic, Davidson offered an unprotected future first-rounder along with a second-round pick, hoping to land Russian star Ivan Demidov. It didn't pan out. The Blue Jackets held their ground, and Demidov ended up going fifth overall to the Montreal Canadiens. 'They were aggressive and clearly had Demidov in their sights,' an anonymous NHL executive told The Athletic, underlining just how committed Davidson was to reshaping the franchise's core. But this wasn't a one-time push. In 2022, Davidson orchestrated two massive draft day trades—sending Kirby Dach to Montreal and Alex DeBrincat to Ottawa in deals that brought back a collection of picks. A year earlier in 2021, the team went all-in for defenseman Seth Jones, packaging Adam Boqvist, two first-rounders, and a second-round pick to make it happen. These moves, alongside a pair of regrettable 2017 trades that still sting for fans, have cemented the Blackhawks as one of the NHL's most unpredictable teams on draft day. Are the Chicago Blackhawks planning a trade-up for Michael Misa in the 2025 NHL draft? This year, the buzz surrounds Michael Misa —a dynamic forward widely expected to be the first name called. If the Blackhawks want him, they'll need to move up from the third overall pick, likely negotiating with the New York Islanders, who currently hold the top selection. 'If they're serious about Misa, they'll need to get creative,' one scout told nhlrumors earlier this week. 'Deals like this don't happen on the draft floor. If it's going to get done, it'll be before the cameras are rolling.' Chicago has the capital, the history, and the ambition. And if there's a front office willing to take a swing, it's Davidson's. Will the Chicago Blackhawks pull off another draft day bombshell in 2025? The Chicago Blackhawks have rewritten their future before with bold draft day decisions, and signs suggest another one might be coming. Whether it's Michael Misa or another rising star, one thing's for sure—when the lights come on at the 2025 NHL Draft, all eyes will be on Chicago. And as history tells us, with Kyle Davidson at the helm, anything can happen. Also Read: T.J. Oshie Retires: Olympic shootout legend and Stanley Cup hero bids emotional farewell to hockey

Indian men's hockey team suffers third consecutive defeat in Pro League, loses 3-4 against Argentina

Sloppy defending cost the Indian men's hockey team dearly as it went down 3-4 to Argentina, slumping to its third consecutive defeat in the European leg of the FIH Pro League here on Wednesday. India had earlier lost 1-2 and 2-3 against Olympic champions Netherlands here. On Wednesday, the Indian defence were caught off guard by the Los Leones as they scored through skipper Matias Rey (3rd minute), Lucas Martinez (17th), Santiago Tarazona (34th) and Lucio Mendez (46th) to secure the win. India's goals were scored by skipper Harmanpreet Singh (12th, 33rd) and Abhishek (42nd). After back-to-back defeats against Netherlands, the Indians started positively and had the better share of possession in the first quarter. But it was Argentina who took the lead in the third minute through captain Matias Rey, courtesy an unforced error from Indian defender Amit Rohidas. Trailing, India, however, pressed hard and dominated the remaining of the quarter and finally restored parity in the 12th minute when skipper Harmanpreet converted a penalty -- the team's first penalty corner -- as both the teams were locked 1-1 at the end of the first quarter. Argentina, however, were the better side on display in the second quarter and took the lead again two minutes into the quarter when Martinez scored from top of the circle, courtesy again a defensive error from Rohidas. While the Indians used the ariel ball to perfection, unforced errors and sloppy defending proved to be their undoing. Three minutes after the change of ends, India equalised through a penalty stroke conversion by Harmanpreet, his second goal of the day. But India's joy was shortlived as 60 seconds later another defensive lapse cost the Harmanpreet-led side dearly when Tarazona pounced upon a mistake to hand his side the lead again. Argentina secured their first penalty corner soon but India defended stoutly. India pressed hard and secured their second penalty corner in the 39th minute but failed to utilise the chance. In the 42nd minute, Abhishek equalised for India, scoring from a rebound after Jarmanpreet Singh's initial shot from top of the circle was saved by Argentina goalkeeper Tomas Satiago. But it was heartbreak for India 18 seconds into the final quarter when Mendez scored to hand his side the decisive lead, courtesy another defensive lapse from the Indian backline. India had another chance to equalise when they were awarded a penalty corner in the 55th minute but wasted the opportunity. With three-and-a-half-minutes remaining and trailing by a goal, India withdrew their goalkeeper for an extra field player but that move didn't yield any result. India will again play Argentina in a return leg match here on Thursday.
