Russian teams remain banned from competing at 2026 Winter Games
Russian teams, including the country's powerful national ice hockey side, remain banned from competing at next year's Milano-Cortina winter Olympics as part of sanctions imposed following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the International Olympic Committee said on Tuesday. The IOC was responding to reports out of Russia that hockey officials from the country had held talks with the international ice hockey federation (IIHF) over Olympic participation. 'The IOC Executive Board recommendation from March 2023 with regard to teams of athletes with a Russian passport remains in place,' the IOC said. 'It is based on the fact that, by definition, a group of Individual Neutral Athletes cannot be considered a team. We take note that the IIHF has confirmed that it will follow this recommendation. A small number of individual Russian and Belarusian athletes were allowed to take part in the Paris 2024 summer Olympics after rigorous vetting by the IOC. They competed without the Russian or Belarusian flag and anthem. Instead they took part as neutral athletes. All Russian teams were banned. Belarus has acted as a staging ground for the invasion. Russian ice hockey players won gold at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and silver four years later in Beijing. The IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee in October 2023 for recognising regional Olympic councils for Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine - Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. 'This (October 2023) recommendation was made after consultations with the International Federations concerned and the other Olympic Movement stakeholders,' the IOC said. 'This position reflects the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee because of its annexation of regional sports organisations on the territory of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine.' 'Such action constitutes a breach of the Olympic Charter because it violates the territorial integrity of the NOC of Ukraine, as recognised by the IOC in accordance with the Olympic Charter,' the Olympic body said. The Winter Olympics in Italy run from February 6-22.

What's the impact of Trump tariffs, travel restrictions on the Olympics? Here's what an IOC executive says
A top International Olympic Committee executive expressed confidence about overcoming any concerns about President Donald Trump's trade and travel policies ahead of the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. But Christophe Dubi, the Switzerland-based IOC's Olympic Games executive director, had little else to say about Trump's new tariffs, which were partially paused Wednesday amid financial fallout over fears of a global trade war, or his proposed travel restrictions. Although the policies could have a big impact on international sporting events in the United States, Dubi said they weren't discussed during Wednesday's closed IOC Executive Board meeting that included the organization's new president-elect, Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe. Neither Coventry nor outgoing IOC President Thomas Bach attended the virtual press briefing held after the meeting. Coventry, however, had previously made it clear she expects to be able to handle Trump, who is also calling on the IOC to bar transgender competitors. 'I have been dealing with, let's say, difficult men in high positions since I was 20 years old,' Coventry told reporters shortly after her election in March. 'First and foremost, what I have learned is that communication will be key. That is something that will happen early on.' Dubi said Wednesday it's too soon to talk specifics about the U.S. administration's policies. 'I think we cannot speculate at this stage,' he said during a virtual news conference, adding that Olympic organizing committees, along with 'the sport movement in general, are constantly facing evolving circumstances.' 'Being 10 years out or two, you might face anything. We have to be confident,' Dubi said, citing what he called 'the good work being done between LA28 and the administration in Washington. ... This is what we build upon.' What's important, he said, is understanding 'what the conditions are' so the Olympics can adapt. 'To do this, it takes strong partnerships between the organizing committee and the public authorities. We've done this in France, including some difficult situations,' Dubi said without offering specifics about what those were for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. 'We found very good solutions with the government and the same will be done in the future,' he said, including in Italy for next year's Winter Games in Milan-Cortina and in the United States, where L.A. isn't the only upcoming host — Utah is the site of the 2034 Winter Games. Last month, the chairman of the L.A.'s Olympic organizing committee, Casey Wasserman, assured IOC members 'irrespective of politics today, America will be open and accepting to all 209 countries for the Olympics.' Wasserman's comments came despite reports Trump is looking at restricting travelers from as many as 43 countries as part of an earlier executive order that could prevent Olympic athletes and spectators from entering the United States. The sweeping tariffs on nearly every country around the globe didn't come until last week. Wednesday, the U.S. president announced a 90-day pause on the reciprocal portion of the tariffs for every country but China. The economic turmoil caused by the tariffs, along with the impact on access to the U.S. market for foreign companies, is expected to impact Olympic sponsorships, a key source of revenue for hosting a Games.

Olympic golf to get a mixed-team event for the 2028 Los Angeles Games
Mixed teams are coming to golf at the Los Angeles Olympics. The International Olympic Committee made it official Wednesday when it released the official program for the 2028 Games, in which female athletes are expected to have a slight majority for the first time. Golf only returned to the Olympic program at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games after a 112-year absence, and it has awarded medals to only one competition — 72 holes of stroke play — for men and for women. The International Golf Federation had been lobbying for a mixed-team competition for the last several years without taking away too much time from golfers' schedules on various tours. Still to be determined are how many teams will compete and the qualification process. 'The International Golf Federation is thrilled with the IOC Executive Board's decision to approve the addition of a mixed-team event to the Olympic Golf program," the IGF said in a statement. It said more details would be released next week. The IOC had an online board meeting Wednesday that was co-chaired in Lausanne, Switzerland, for the first time by Kirsty Coventry since she was elected IOC president last month. She takes over in June for Thomas Bach and will be the first female IOC president in its 131-year history. The men's competition would start on Wednesday — one day earlier than before — and end on Saturday. The mixed teams would be held on Sunday and Monday, with foursomes (alternate shot) used for one round and fourballs (better ball) the other. Tuesday would be a practice day for the women, and their competition would start Wednesday through Saturday, one day before the Summer Games come to a close. The golf competition is scheduled for Riviera Country Club, a revered PGA Tour stop that has hosted major championships. Riviera is to host the U.S. Women's Open for the first time in 2026, and the U.S. Open returns in 2031. A mixed team event would require only two more days for the players who qualify for the Olympics. It's unlikely any of the top players would be competing the following week at a regular PGA Tour or LPGA Tour event. Scottie Scheffler won the men's gold medal at the 2024 Paris Games by closing with a 62 at Le Golf National. Lydia Ko won the women's gold in Paris — she won the silver in Rio and the bronze in Tokyo in 2021 — which also gave her points required for the LPGA Hall of Fame. ___ AP golf:

Boxing receives official IOC thumbs-up for Los Angeles Games - Omni sports
Boxing will feature at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after International Olympic Committee members voted unanimously for its inclusion on Thursday. The sport had passed a major hurdle when the IOC Executive Board on Monday recognised World Boxing as the federation to oversee the sport. It ends years of divisions over the way the sport -- which has featured at every Olympic Games since 1904, except Stockholm in 1912 as it was barred under a Swedish law -- is run. The IOC stepped in to organise the boxing tournaments at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and the Paris Olympics last year after breaking with the Russian-led International Boxing Association over financial, governance and ethical concerns. IOC president Thomas Bach had warned that boxing's national federations needed to find a new and "reliable" international partner if it wanted to be included at the 2028 Games. Last month, the IOC provisionally recognised World Boxing as the body to oversee the sport at future Olympics and on Thursday the IOC Session rubberstamped the move. The president of World Boxing, Boris van der Vorst, said in a statement: "World Boxing is very grateful to the IOC for the faith they have placed in our organisation by restoring boxing to the programme for LA2028, and I can reassure them that we will do everything in our power to ensure that we operate to the highest standards of governance and transparency and deliver sporting integrity." Former Olympic boxing champions welcomed the green light for the sport's inclusion in 2028. Ukraine's Wladimir Klitschko, who took gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games, said: "This is absolutely fantastic news. Winning Olympic gold was one of the biggest highlights of my career and I would hate to see that opportunity get taken away from future generations. "The Olympic Games is so important to our sport and to have not been part of it would have been a disaster for boxing and boxers everywhere from the grassroots to the professionals." It is one of the last votes to be conducted under Bach, whose 12-year tenure is coming to a close. His successor as president will be decided in a vote later on Thursday. There are seven candidates, with the front-runners IOC veteran Juan Antonio Samaranch Junior, World Athletics president Sebastian Coe and former Olympic swimmer Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe.
