Missing paddleboarder found dead as murder investigation launched
A woman who vanished while paddleboarding has been found dead as a murder investigation is launched.
One day after she was reported missing, Sunshine "Sunny" Stewart, who had "an adventurous spirit without fear", was discovered lifeless on Crawford Pond in Union, Maine. Police believe Sunshine, a campaigner for women's rights, was murdered and are now appealing for information, reports the Mirror.
Although the death has led to fear and discomfort, officers stress there is no wider threat to the public despite no arrests having been made. Detectives have sealed off part of a campsite adjacent to the lake where the body was found as they probe the death.
Paying tribute to Sunshine, her longime friend, Stacey Yandell, said: "She rebuilt her own house including the slate roof and siding. She was a strong, self-made woman. She could do it all. She could pick up on any skill or trade... She had such a strong personality. She radiated positivity and love. She was like a magnet. People were attracted to her. She was just a light that lit up the room. People were attracted to her because of that personality."
Sunshine, who never married or had any children, lived in Tenants Harbor, Maine, which is around 30 minutes from the lake. The 48-year-old woman was a competent paddleboarder, her friends said.
Sunshine's body was found under "unusual circumstances," police previously said. In a fresh statement, the force has now updated the community, confirming the death is being treated as murder. Officers have asked residents to remain aware of their surroundings and report suspicious behaviour.
More than $19,000 (£14,000) has been raised on a GoFundMe appeal, and the money will be used for Sunshine's funeral. The page reads: "Today is a sombre day for our family and friends. We've unexpectedly lost the light in our lives that was Sunny."
Michael Taylor, a friend who now lives in Oregon, told Bangor Daily News: "She carried this adventurous spirit without fear. She never hesitated when facing a challenge." Michael also said he remembers Sunshine, a former carpenter, for her passion for the environment and her green lifestyle.
Sunshine, who leaves behind a sister, a brother, and nephews, had gone out paddleboarding by herself at 6pm last Wednesday at the campsite in Union, police say. It is understood she died within the following four hours. Anyone who may have seen anything there between 6pm and 10pm is encouraged to contact police.
The paddleboarder's body was discovered the following day after a large-scale search, which involved foot patrol and drones. Her cause of death has not been disclosed at this time.

Thankfully, one of Labour's first jobs in government was bringing in a new Workers' Rights Bill - which will give added protections to millions of employees. Sadly that bill is not yet law, and will not take effect on the ground until next year at the earliest. Until it comes in, we have to hope that companies will recognise that improvements are needed to keep Scotland's workforce safe. Those that fail to look after the safety of their employees should be dragged through the courts. The First Minister has said the trigger for a second referendum can only be the SNP winning an outright majority of seats at next year's Holyrood election. Now Dennis Canavan, a prominent independence supporter, has warned that the strategy is high risk. Canavan has a point and it seems highly unlikely that after 19 years in government the SNP will repeat Salmond's success. Swinney certainly cannot be accused of lacking ambition. But in aiming high for his party, the First Minister may have taken independence off the table for many years to come.

Four bodies found after baby girl strapped to car seat in stranger's garden
The infant was found alone in a yard by a local resident earlier this week. A baby girl's parents, uncle and gran have been found dead after the infant was discovered strapped to a car seat in a stranger's garden. The baby was discovered alone inside the yard after a resident on Highway 20, near Tigrett, in Tennessee, alerted police at about 3:11pm local time on Tuesday, July 29. Authorities confirmed a child had been left in a Dyer County yard and was now safe. A probe was launched amid concern the girl's parents and relatives could not be contacted. The girl's paternal grandmother said she last had contact with her son at 6:34am on Monday while he headed home from Big River Steel. It comes after a woman, 20, was found dead on bus with 26 iPhones glued to her body, reports the Mirror. Family members said none of those missing would have consciously left the child behind. Just hours later, officials discovered the bodies off Carrington Road. The Dyer County District Attorney's Office confirmed that the girl's parents James Wilson, 21, and Adrianna Williams, 20, were found dead. Cortney Rose, 38, and Braydon Williams, 15, the baby's maternal grandmother and uncle, were also found dead. Officials discovered two vehicles connected to the family, a black Dodger Charger and a White SUV, near the crime scene. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations is now leading the investigation with assistance from the Dyer County Sheriff. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations said: "The investigation, including efforts to identify and apprehend the suspect or suspects, remains active and ongoing." The investigation is active and ongoing. In an update shared today, the sheriff's department issued details of a suspect wanted by officials. Austin Robert Drummond is wanted on suspicion of first-degree murder, kidnapping and several other charges. He was described as 5'10 with brown hair, blue eyes and a goatee. Young boy sexually assaulted at Scots campsite as suspect 'fled the area'
An eight-year-old boy was attacked while in his tent just yards from where his family had set up camp. Cops have launched a major manhunt after a predator sexually assaulted a young boy at a Scots campsite before they fled the area. An eight-year-old boy was preyed on whilst in his tent just yards from where his family had camped up. The sickening attack happened between 12.20am and 1am on Thursday morning at Loch Ness Bay Campsite, Drumnadrochit. A man approached the child within his tent. Police say he sexually assaulted the boy before leaving the area. The horror incident happened whilst the boy was on a camping trip with his family. Specialist officers have been drafted in to support the boy and traumatised loved ones. Detectives are now desperately trying to trace the male suspect who they have described as a white man, aged between 35-50-years-old. He is around 5ft 10ins tall and bald. Officers swarmed the popular campsite today as they promised extra patrols in an attempt to reassure the local community. CID have been pouring through CCTV footage and say they are carrying out enquiries in the local area. Senior detectives have appealed to campers for help and asked anyone who saw something suspicious to get in touch. They have described their investigation as "significant" into what they say will be a "worrying and upsetting" incident for residents. A full statement from Police Scotland reads: "Detectives are appealing for information in connection with the sexual assault of an eight-year-old boy in Drumnadrochit. "Between 12.20am and 1am on Thursday, 31, July, 2025, a man approached the child within his tent at the Loch Ness Bay Campsite. His family were in an adjacent tent. "He sexually assaulted the boy before leaving the area. "The suspect is described as a white man, aged between 35 to 50-years-old, around 5ft 10ins tall, and bald. "Extensive enquiries are ongoing, and specialist officers are supporting the boy and his family. Detective Inspector Christopher Macleod said: 'This sexual assault was carried out on a young boy, who was camping overnight with his family and it is vital we trace the man responsible as soon as possible. "A dedicated team of officers are carrying out investigations, including carrying out enquiries in the local area and reviewing all available CCTV footage. "I would urge anyone who was staying in the Drumnadrochit area to come forward, as any piece of information, no matter how small or insignificant you think it is, could prove vital. "Please think back - do you recognise anyone who matches the description of the suspect? "Or did you see anyone behaving in a strange manner, giving cause for concern, or loitering in the area?
