B&M confirms exact date Scottish store will close with shoppers left 'heartbroken'

Daily Recorda day ago
The firm will be switching its focus to a refurbished store nearby instead.
The Scottish high street is set for another closure. This time, it's B&M that is shutting up shop, with one of its branches near Edinburgh being axed in the new year.
The popular bargain retailer will be shuttering its Musselburgh store in East Lothian within the next few months, with bosses confirming it will close its doors on January 9, 2026.
It's unclear why the store will be closing down, although the Scottish Sun reports that bosses have revealed that staff members will be relocated to alternative stores within the area.
It comes as bosses have said that they will be switching focus onto the firm's store based in the Fort Kinnaird centre that has recently undergone a massive revamp.
Located just 12 minutes away from the Musselburgh branch and actually within the capital's city limits, it now offers shoppers a garden centre and a much larger selection of products for them to browse through.
A spokesperson for B&M said: "All colleagues from this store will be offered employment at local B&M stores in the surrounding area after the closure on January 9.
'We're committed to bringing the best possible B&M stores to East Lothian.
"We recently upgraded our nearby Fort Kinnaird store – now home to a garden centre and a much bigger range just two miles away, ensuring we continue to offer the best possible shopping experience and broadest range in the area."
Shoppers on social media haven't met the news lightly, with one saying: "More empty shops. No parking in Musselburgh to encourage retailers. Shame for staff."
Another added: "A bloody disgrace." Someone else wrote: "Such a shame, it's always busy."
While a fourth posted: "Heart is BROKEN, this is gutting." And a fifth chimed in: "Shocking news".
Formed in 1978, B&M is now one of the UK's leading retailers on the high street, employing more than 35,000 staff members across over 700 stores, with 76 based in Scotland alone.
The news comes amidst a wave of closures to hit the high street recently, with The Original Factory and Poundland closing down stores across Scotland in recent weeks, with more planned for the future.

Meanwhile, in other high street related news, the UK branch of Claire's Accessories recently collapsed into administration, leaving 2,000 jobs across over 300 stores at risk.
We reported last week that the jewellery firm's website was no longer taking orders.
Customers are also unable to seek refunds on previously made orders after the company drafted in advisors to help repay a loan worth $480million (£355million).

Historic sea fort built to defend from French listed to sell for £1.5m & boasts nightclub, spa, and luxury rooms

The more than 160-year-old Victorian island fort offers a luxury lifestyle, including a nightclub and a spa for the eventual buyer. It's such a classically British setting that an episode of Doctor Who was once filmed at the site. The 99,000 square foot setting is open for new owners, boasting 23 bedrooms and a helipad. It features five bars and a restaurant, as well as a "huge scope for conversion", according to the estate agent Colliers. Their website reads: "The Solent Forts date back over 160 years when fear of invasion by the French led by Napoleon III resulted in the commissioning of these sea-based defences by British Prime Minister Lord Palmerston. "With 15ft granite walls and armour plating, these magnificent structures are testament to the skill of Victorian engineering." But if the property's maritime history isn't enough for a prospective buyer, its sci-fi credentials might sway them. The fort was used as a shooting location for the classic Doctor Who story The Sea Devils, which featured Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor. It also boasts a nightclub, pub and spa area in the exclusive location. Once upon a time, the fort was a four-star hotel, and was taken at auction earlier this year for £1.25million as an "impulse buy". Britain's newest & biggest warship HMS Prince of Wales to defy furious China and sail through Taiwan Strait Ed Jefferson, from Colliers Hotels team, told the MailOnline it offers a "rare opportunity to make a mark in a truly unique location". He added: "The remote location provides either great privacy or exclusivity for potential guests and clients. "It could be a great location for multiple hospitality and leisure operators together, or one tenant could take the whole site, we're open to proposals." The listing further says that "planning has been obtained to construct a breakwater and harbour to improve boat water access". The property was lavishly refurbished in 2015, with nearly £8million spent on the property as well as nearby Spitbank Fort. It can be found just minutes away from the Gunwharf Quays shopping centre on the waterfront in Portsmouth. The 23-bedroom floating mansion was previously on sale for £4.25million back in 2021. It was built in the 1860s by ex-Prime Minister Lord Palmerston to act as a line of defence for the British isles. 6 The property was lavishly refurbished in 2015 Credit: Alamy 6 The fort was used as a shooting location for the classic Doctor Who story The Sea Devils Credit: Rightmove

OnPath Energy achieves financial close on South Lanarkshire wind farm

Essential infrastructure work is completed and all the turbine foundations are constructed. Leading UK renewables developer OnPath Energy has successfully achieved financial close on a 33.4MW Scottish onshore wind project. ‌ The six-turbine Mill Rig Wind Farm, which sits between Strathaven and Darvel in South Lanarkshire, will feature some of the UK's most advanced turbines to maximise energy generation and efficiency, and will further increase OnPath Energy's support for Scotland's ambitious renewable energy goals. ‌ NatWest provided project financing for the asset, with the long-term agreement including a term loan and other ancillary facilities to support the project throughout its construction and operational life. ‌ OnPath Energy has financed the project to date and civil engineering works are already at an advanced stage, with essential infrastructure work completed and all the turbine foundations constructed, helping to maintain the delivery programme. Oliver Hartley, finance director at OnPath Energy, says: 'Reaching financial close marks the culmination of many months of hard work across all of our project teams and has been achieved thanks to a collaborative approach across our key suppliers, advisors and lenders, harnessing the strong relationships we've developed. ‌ 'Being part of the Brookfield ecosystem supports us through access to capital and PPA markets, which in the case of Mill Rig includes securing a long-term offtake agreement with a US technology company as well as finance from NatWest. 'Mill Rig is an important project for OnPath and we're thrilled to have reached this important stage in its development. 'Working with our partners, Wilson Forest Products, local civil engineers RJ McLeod and turbine manufacturers Nordex, we're delivering a highly-efficient project that has community support. We're looking forward to seeing the six turbines fully operational and delivering social, environmental and economic benefits for the local community and the wider UK following completion of the project.' ‌ Kristofer Gibson, NatWest Project Finance, commented: 'We are delighted to provide OnPath Energy with this bilateral financing to enable the construction of Mill Rig Wind Farm. 'The transaction marks our continued support to the onshore wind sector and strengthens our relationship with a leading player in the UK energy transition.' As part of the UK developer's 'OnPath Together' development approach, the project is expected to directly support around 300 jobs through its construction period, with many more generated indirectly through the wider supply chain. ‌ OnPath Energy has committed to prioritising local contractors and businesses, with £91 million invested within 60km of the site being spent locally throughout its development, construction and operation. Over its lifetime, Mill Rig Wind Farm has committed to delivering a £5 million community fund supporting local people, environmental and community groups within a 10km radius of the site, while South Lanarkshire Council will receive around £18 million in business rates. Mill Rig Wind Farm is the latest in a series of renewable projects delivered by OnPath Energy, with the company currently having an overall generation capacity of 252MW, along with a further 550MW of consented wind, solar and battery storage projects and around 3GW in the overall development pipeline. ‌ OnPath was acquired in December 2023 by Brookfield Asset Management, one of the world's largest owners and operators of renewable power plants. Brookfield has over 46,000 megawatts of operating capacity worldwide, equivalent to two thirds of the UK's renewable energy capacity.

'Mega comfy' Skechers trainers that 'feel like slippers' are now better than half price

Shoppers rush to buy a 'mega comfy' pair of Skechers trainers that are praised for 'feeling like slippers' as they plummet to under half price in this rare deal As we move into autumn, a pair of trainers will undoubtedly be a wardrobe staple. Whether paired with casual attire or something more formal, the perfect design can be worn repeatedly. Naturally, it's not solely about appearance, as they must also provide comfort. For precisely that reason, Skechers is an obvious choice, and we've spotted one "mega comfy" pair available for better than half price. The footwear brand's Flex Appeal 4.0 Brilliant View Sneakers are currently available for £28.50 on Amazon, reduced from the usual £64, delivering an impressive discount of 55% off the original retail price, reports the Daily Record. It's worth noting that the online giant's reduction applies only to the black with rose gold trim colourway, with sizes available from a two through to 10, including half-sizes. These athletic, lace-up trainers boast Skechers' renowned Air-Cooled Memory Foam insole that maintains foot cushioning, delivering immediate comfort, pressure relief and breathability. Constructed from lightweight mesh material, they also include a shock-absorbing midsole and flexible rubber traction outsole, making them ideal for dedicated fitness enthusiasts who frequent the gym or go jogging. Amazon isn't the sole destination to secure a reduction on new trainers, as Nike is running its own sale, with the sportswear giant's Air Zoom Upturn SC slashed from £89.99 to £53.99, a discount of 40%. If you're on the hunt for something a bit more budget-friendly but still sporty, Sainsbury's has got you covered. The supermarket is offering a variety of styles, including their Navy Knitted Slip-On Trainers, which are a steal at £18 a pair. The Flex Appeal Trainers from Skechers have proven to be a hit, racking up nearly 13,000 reviews on Amazon. Shoppers have lauded them as "so light" that they "don't know they are wearing them." One thrilled customer shared: "Mega comfy. First time wearing I walked for miles. Extremely comfortable, highly recommend." Another glowing review read: "These are great trainers, so light and comfortable, feels like you're wearing slippers!" A similarly satisfied shopper wrote: "Fantastic trainers feel like a pair of slippers don't Know you're wearing them. Lightweight and support your feet." However, the design might not be the best fit for those with pain-related issues needing extra support. As one three-star reviewer noted: "I have plantar fasciitis so will need to revert to the arch fit style. Look lovely though." In contrast, another pleased customer stated: "I will only wear Skechers trainers as they are the comfiest and longest wearing trainers. These trainers are great. "I had concerns over sizing as I have never purchased trainers through Amazon before. The fit is perfect and true to size. Comfy from first wear! Bought them for under £40, bargain!"
