Islamic State claims first attack on Syrian forces since Assad's fall

BEIRUT: The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for two attacks in southern Syria, including one on government forces that an opposition war monitor described as the first on the Syrian army to be adopted by the extremists since the fall of Bashar Assad.
In two separate statements issued late Thursday, IS said that in the first attack, a bomb was detonated targeting a "vehicle of the apostate regime," leaving seven soldiers dead or wounded. It said the attack occurred "last Thursday," or May 22, in the al-Safa area in the desert of the southern province of Sweida.
IS said that the second attack occurred this week in a nearby area during which a bomb targeted members of the U.S.-backed
Free Syrian Army, claiming that it killed one fighter and wounded three.
There was no comment from the government on the claim of the attack.
The Britain-based Syrian observatory for human rights said that the attack on government forces killed one civilian and wounded three soldiers, describing it as the first such attack to be claimed by IS against Syrian forces since the fall of the 54-year Assad family's rule in December.
IS, which once controlled large parts of Syria and Iraq, is opposed to the new authority in Damascus led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, who was once the head of al-Qaida's branch in Syria and fought battles against IS.
Over the past several months, IS has claimed responsibility for attacks against the U.S.-backed and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in the northeast.
IS was defeated in Syria in March 2019 when SDF fighters captured the last sliver of land that the extremists controlled.
Since then, its sleeper cells have carried out deadly attacks, mainly in eastern and northeast Syria.
In January, state media reported that intelligence officials in Syria's post-Assad government thwarted a plan by IS to set off a bomb at a Shiite Muslim shrine south of Damascus.
Al-Sharaa met with US President Donald Trump in Saudi Arabia earlier this month during which the American leader said that Washington would work on lifting crippling economic sanctions imposed on Damascus since the days of Assad.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement after the meeting that Trump urged al-Sharaa to diplomatically recognize Israel, "tell all foreign terrorists to leave Syria" and help the US stop any resurgence of the Islamic State group.

"Delhi suffered 11 years of misgovernance, now seeing results of 100 days of good governance," BJP MP Yogendra Chandolia
New Delhi [India], June 2 (ANI): BJP MP Yogendra Chandolia has praised the BJP-led Delhi government's 100-day performance while launching a sharp attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for what he called eleven years of misgovernance. Chandolia highlighted improvements in sanitation, healthcare, and transport, claiming the current administration has delivered visible change in contrast to the AAP government's alleged failures. Speaking to ANI, Chandolia said, 'Delhi suffered eleven years of misgovernance, and now it's seeing the results of a hundred days of good governance. In just one monsoon, work that was neglected for over a decade is finally being done--silt is being cleared from roads and drains that were never cleaned before.' Chandolia alleged that fake billing was rampant during the AAP government's tenure, while basic services like drinking water remained out of reach for many citizens. 'Under the previous government, fake billing thrived while citizens struggled for drinking water,' he said. Aiming at AAP's unfulfilled transport promises, he said, 'Kejriwal had promised 10,000 electric buses in eleven years. Still, it is under the BJP-led government that new buses are being delivered.' He also accused the AAP government of depriving citizens of vital healthcare benefits. 'Due to Kejriwal's refusal, the people of Delhi were denied the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. Today, citizens above 70 years receive health insurance coverage of Rs 10 lakh through a combined effort of the Prime Minister's and Delhi government's schemes.' He added, 'The previous government boasted about a health and education model but failed to equip hospitals with basic facilities like diagnostic machines. In contrast, within a hundred days, visible change has begun.' He also underscored improvements in sanitation and waste management. 'Garbage piled up for years is being removed from the streets and drains. The landfill mountains in places like Ghazipur are finally shrinking. If this progress continues for 365 days, Delhi will truly witness a transformation into a cleaner, more beautiful capital,' he said. Earlier, BJP leader Mohan Singh Bisht praised the transformative first hundred days of the BJP-led Delhi government, highlighting significant achievements and a proactive approach that has restored public trust after 27 years. He credited Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for demonstrating strong willpower in driving Delhi's development while criticising the AAP for continuing to suppress public voices in the Assembly. After completing 100 days in office as the Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta said it was not just a responsibility but a 'politics centred on public service, and policies that are for public welfare.' AIADMK defers RS seat allotment, DMDK to reveal poll ties in Jan 2026
Apparently perturbed over AIADMK's decision to defer the allocation of a Rajya Sabha seat to it to 2026, the DMDK said it would announce its poll ties ahead of the Assembly election next year. Stopping short of accusing the AIADMK of not honouring its commitment made before the 2024 Lok Sabha election, DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth said the AIADMK had already allotted a seat each to Dr Anbumani Ramadoss (PMK) and G K Vasan (TMC) in the past and now it was the turn of her party to get a Rajya Sabha seat. Playing down DMDK's decision to make known its stand on alliance on January 9, 2026, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami told reporters in Coimbatore on June 1 that the ties between the AIADMK and DMDK were smooth and attempts to break them would not fructify. On June 1, AIADMK Deputy General Secretary K P Munusamy announced that DMDK remained part of the AIADMK-led alliance and a Rajya Sabha seat will be allocated to that party in 2026. On May 31, DMDK treasurer L K Sudheesh called on Palaniswami and discussed the upcoming Rajya Sabha election. Responding to the development, Premalatha claimed the AIADMK had committed in writing that it would allot five Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha seat to her party during the 2024 Lok Sabha election. This assurance was given in writing. When we asked him to specify the date, Mr Palaniswami had said the year is not usually mentioned in the letter, Premalatha told reporters here. She did not reveal all these details earlier, as it was the AIADMK's duty to fulfill its commitment. Now we will fulfill our duty by deciding on the alliance at our party meeting in Cuddalore on January 9, 2026, Premalatha told reporters here on June 1 when sought for her reaction. She further said that politics revolved around elections and the AIADMK had fulfilled its responsibility keeping in mind the 2026 Assembly election. We will also do the same, as every political party acts with election in mind. The DMDK would soon announce election-incharge for all the 234 assembly constituencies in the state and commence the poll work, she added. The DMDK general secretary thanked Chief Minister M K Stalin and his DMK for adopting a resolution at that party's general council meeting in Madurai on June 1 paying tributes to DMDK founder Captain' Vijayakanth who died about a year and a half ago.
