Marriage Diaries: My wife's a chronic complainer and I'm sick of it
Clearly, she meant it because ever since that fateful fricassee, she has gone from strength to strength in exercising her consumer rights.
Watch out, Watchdog, there's a new sheriff in town.
Her new regime started with the cabbie who kept his meter running on our driveway while my wife ran into the house to get cash and by the time she came out she was a fiver short. I wasn't there, but she recounted the tale of the taxi to me afterwards saying she flat-out refused to pay more, the fare should have stopped when they reached the destination, and it wasn't her fault he didn't have a card machine. An argument ensued. My wife didn't back down. Neighbours and passers-by all joined in the uprising, and he grabbed the cash and high-tailed it off to his next fare. Win.
Next up, the delivery guy whose package for us looked like it had recently been used as a football that had then been sat on at half-time. My wife took a picture of it and refused to accept it. Another win.
However, I'm now starting to think that we've created a bit of a monster as each successful complaint and stand-off has emboldened her further, to the point where she now seems to be looking for things to kick up a stink about.
Eating out is stressful because there are so many points of potential conflict. The demeanour of the staff. The duration between ordering and eating. And that's before we even get to the food itself. Will the carrots be orange enough for her?
Even if everything is to her satisfaction, she then turns to everyone else around the table to ask how our meals are. 'Delicious,' we all reply in unison, to avoid further conflict.
Airbnb and hotel rooms are another target-rich environment for her, and as soon as we're through the door, the inspection levels rival those of a British Army barracks.
What I'd like her to do is strike the right balance between not saying boo to a goose (or an inedible chicken) and being an unholy pain in the backside.
And, I've realised to do that, I need to find my voice, my inner complainer. I'm not talking about joining the queues clogging up the customer service desks of this world, but I need to complain to my wife about her complaining. Talking to her in a language she'll surely understand.
And I know I need to do this urgently before we go on holiday this summer because we've never set foot in an airport without there being a problem with one of our family's carry-ons: weight, size, wrong colour, too many zips.
However, this is the first time we'll have done so since my wife found her inner Matt Allwright. So, when they hit us with the inevitable surcharge, we'll see what happens when the unstoppable force that is now my wife comes face-to-face with the immovable object that is the budget airline check-in desk.
So, if you're at Heathrow this summer I can only apologise in advance if your flight's delayed. It may not be the airline's fault. It may be mine. I'm just trying to find the right moment to tell my wife. The thing is, I hate complaining.

Princess Anne reportedly wants Prince William to ditch an annoying habit. Several royal experts claimed to Fox News Digital that the late queen's only daughter, who has been crowned "the hardest-working royal," is hopeful that her nephew will pick up the slack as he prepares to be king one day. "Prince William, in the past, had allegations that he was work-shy," royal expert Ian Pelham Turner claimed to Fox News Digital. "… The 'perfect prince' image may be slightly tarnished, and Princess Anne takes no prisoners." "My natural reaction is that Princess Anne will win this battle," Turner added. Turner's comments came shortly after The Sunday Times reported that William "annoys" his aunt when it comes to their shared royal duty. The U.K. published a profile of Anne leading up to her 75th birthday next month. Several unnamed sources close to the princess claimed that she would like to see the father of three do more "bread-and-butter" royal engagements. The outlet pointed out that only King Charles, as well as Anne and William, do investitures, and many of them take place at Windsor Castle, near William's home, Adelaide Cottage. "She's still doing most of the investitures [at Windsor] even though William lives there," a source close to Anne claimed to the outlet. "It annoys her." Fox News Digital reached out to Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace for comment. Investitures are described as ceremonies in which a senior royal presents medals to people recognized for their significant contributions. The special services are traditionally held at either Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. According to the royal family's website, there are about 30 investitures each year. "Princess Anne's well-deserved reputation stems from her ability to carry out everyday royal engagements without fanfare or praise," royal commentator Amanda Matta explained to Fox News Digital. "So seeing William, who lives just down the road from Windsor, skip out on investitures, she's still doing herself in her mid-70s? I imagine that would absolutely get under her skin." "With fewer working royals in the fold, and even fewer who can carry out significant engagements like investitures, Anne likely wants to see William take on more of the foundational royal work… not just the high-profile tours and splashier events," Matta shared. "The steady, day-in, day-out work is what keeps the monarchy visible and justifies their existence. It also feels like we're watching two very different generations define 'royal duty' in very different ways. Anne's motto is 'just get on with it,' while William always seems concerned with what an event says about the future of the crown." Despite Anne's reported personal feelings, she's adamant about supporting the heir to the throne. The outlet reported that Anne is "fond of her nephew" and will be by his side if she's still working when he accedes to the throne. And the feeling is mutual. Three weeks after suffering a horse-related accident, Anne returned to work, black eye and all. William and his wife, Kate Middleton, acknowledged her dedication on X: "Super trooper! So great to see you back so soon. W&C x." According to the outlet, William "is known to admire his aunt's devotion to duty." "Even if there is any annoyance, there's mutual respect as well as affection between Princess Anne and Prince William as all who know them can confirm," British royals expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital. "Princess Anne remains most supportive of Prince William's future as king," she shared. "She admires his sense of duty and commitment to the crown as well as his being a good family man rather than so many of his Prince of Wales predecessors who have, throughout history, been notorious for their womanizing while awaiting ascending to the throne." "As Prince William grows into his role, we are likely to see more collaboration for future royal events, particularly at Windsor," Fordwich continued. "There is a balance to bear in mind between Prince William's current greater focus on his family versus the more traditional ceremonial approach Princess Anne has upheld. He is well aware of this." He's taking that role most seriously." According to People magazine, Anne will hold the most investiture ceremonies in 2025. In 2023, Anne attended the most engagements of any member of the royal family, reports revealed. She conducted 457 engagements, making her the most industrious for the third year running. William has been accused of being "work-shy" by critics for limiting his royal engagements. Prince Harry wrote about the label in his memoir "Spare." The Duke of Sussex pointed out that when the accusations first came to light, his brother was raising his firstborn, Prince George, and expecting his daughter Charlotte. But with the king's slimmed-down monarchy, he will be expected to juggle multiple roles. "[William and Catherine] have long been accused of being 'work-shy,' and frankly, it comes from a deep desire to provide a normal life for their family," she explained. "It was easier to accomplish that work-life balance in years past when the kids were young." "There were more working members of the family, and [William and Catherine] were less senior," she said. "But that's no longer the case. And they are going to need to get with the program. They are very duty-driven, and they have a heart for service, but sometimes the country, and indeed the world, expect to see them at a time when it may be inconvenient for them. And that's always been the essential conflict of that job – the crown comes first." As for Anne, she plans to continue working. "She has said her plan is to push on [with work] until she is 80, then start winding down a bit, and then copy the [late] Duke of Edinburgh and wind down completely at 90," a source told the Sunday Times.

'Living pillars' to be added to city lamp-posts
A number of lamp-posts in Derby are to have vertical planters installed to help create a "greener" city centre. The planters, described as "living pillars", will be attached to 15 existing lamp-posts and signage posts. Each of the pillars is solar-powered, able to collect rain water - making them self-sufficient - and will be planted with pollinator-friendly plants and flowers, Derby City Council said. Work to install the pillars is currently under way and will be completed later this summer. Carmel Swan, the authority's cabinet member for sustainability, said: "Living pillars will be a brilliant addition to the work we've been doing over the past few months to bring more life into our city centre. "We're serious about our commitment to creating a greener, healthier city that supports our residents, and the installation of these pillars is another step towards achieving this." A number of bee-friendly bus stops and "pocket parks" were introduced across the city in 2024. The pillars have been designed by Scotscape, an urban landscaping company that focuses on improving biodiversity in cities, and are funded by Bauer Media Outdoor's Community Innovation Fund. Changes to plans for huge Sutton Coldfield 5,500-home development labelled 'eco vandalism'
Amended plans for a huge housing development on the edge of Birmingham have been submitted and are set to be discussed next week. The Langley Sutton Coldfield Consortium has submitted revised plans for the big 5,500-home development set to be built on former greenbelt land in Sutton Coldfield next to Walmley. The consortium, made up of a series of developers who are set to build the homes, says plans have been reviewed and changed to take on board residents' and local councillors' concerns. But local representatives have said some of the proposals are still opposed by residents and there is a demand for a further rethink. Read more: Hundreds oppose 'wildlife corridor destruction' plan linked to development There will be a chance for residents to quiz the developers direct at a public meeting held in Falcon Lodge next Monday (July 28). The Langley Consortium has said it has amended two key elements following the receipt of feedback to its previous proposals. A hedge row erupted last year, when the developers announced plans to remove more than 400 metres of mature hedgerows to make way for a new combined 3.5-metre wide cycle way and footpath. At the time more than 1,000 people had objected to the proposal to rip out the established hedgerow, home to a range of wildlife. And that figure is now almost 2,000. The consortium says it has 'listened' to those objections and now proposes intalling an 'instant hedge' along the western boundary of the site by Springfield Road. Another concern raised over the location of a primary electricity sub-station has also been addressed with that plan not now going head. On the hedge 'row' the Langley Consortium insisted the current hedgerow had to be removed as there was not space for a new cycleway, which Birmingham City Council insists must be installed – and must be next to the existing road. It said: 'The need for a walking/cycling route along the western boundary was prescribed by the city council's Highways to encourage sustainable travel and deliver a visible, safe and usable route for both new and existing residents. 'The existing verge on Springfield Road between Churchill Road and Reddicap Heath Road is too narrow to accommodate this facility resulting in the need to remove a 400m section of hedgerow. 'The consortium has committed to replanting a native, species-rich mature 'instant' hedgerow which will be circa 1.8m high in the first year of planting (broadly equivalent to the height of the existing hedge).' In addition to the new 'insta-hedge', the consortium said there will also be new tree planting and the hedge may go above 1.8 metres. It also claimed the new hedge would be better than the old one saying: 'This will provide an enhancement to biodiversity when compared with the existing, single non-native species hedgerow 'And can immediately reinstate the visual screening function provided by the existing hedgerow.' A spokesperson for the Langley Consortium said: 'We have listened to the concerns of residents and have amended our plans. 'We have removed the proposed primary electricity sub-station and are investing in an 'instant hedge' along Springfield Road. 'This new, 'instant hedge' enables the creation of a safe walking and cycling route together with an improved landscaping and biodiversity function. 'This forward-focused approach to delivering enduring benefits forms part of the wider drive to deliver an exemplar development.' Read more: Rising crime in suburb sparks plea on how to spend police station sell-off cash But Sutton Reddicap councillor, Richard Parkin, aired his frustrations claiming he had to fight to get a public meeting, with the consortium at first not willing to do so. And he also said the hedge replacement issue misses the point that residents want the existing hedgerow to be retained and the cycleway to be the new homes side of that natural barrier. That's rather than it being destroyed and replaced by a new hedge metres from where one already exists. Cllr Parkin (Sutton Reddicap, Cons.) said: 'Langley Consortium recently submitted updated plans and there's 80 new documents and almost 400 in total. 'There's pages and pages of stuff, which is virtually impossible to read and understand. 'Residents have contacted me and said 'how do we work out what we are looking at here?' 'The Langley Consortium was reluctant to have a meeting initially and then wanted to be at a ward meeting and only answer written questions. 'I said you have got to talk to people and eventually they agreed to have a public meeting – next Monday.' On the 'instant hedgerow' proposal Cllr Parkin said: 'I have many questions on it. 'The general view of residents they remain opposed to removing the hedgerow that's been there at least 90 years. 'It's eco-vandalism to encourage people to walk and cycle and active travel but to remove a mature hedgerow which a wildlife expert has said is home to a massive variety of birds and other animals. 'How long will it take for them to come back to the instant hedgerow, will it last as it will need a lot of watering before it is established. 'It seems sacrilege to remove a bio-diverse hedgerow to replace it with a new one metres away. 'Nearly 2,000 residents have objected to that and they haven't listened.' Cllr Parkin also said the new north A38 junction should have a northerly exit, not just one to the south – a point other councillors and residents have raised before. In a report set to be discussed at the town council's planning committee next Tuesday (July 29), he recommended objections to the instant hedgerow plan saying the consortium and city council's arguments on why the new cycleway cannot be put behind the existing hedgerow 'can be refuted'. He referred to previous objections in December 2024 'remain unchanged and in some cases exacerbated' – namely the cycleway behind the existing hedge 'would be much more sensitive and beneficial in environmental terms compared to that currently being proposed'. Get the latest Sutton Coldfield news delivered direct to your inbox Mr Lord also questioned the internal road design within Langley as not 'safely accommodating cyclists' with question marks over the 6.5 metre (3.25 metre per carriageway) width of the road. And said the cycleway stops before reaching the northern section of the site. He also called for north facing slip roads on the second A38 junction – yet to be built, with fears traffic will be pushed onto more minor roads and cause congestion. And for a reliable bus service. The revised plans will be able to be discussed by Langley Consortium at an informal residents' drop-in question and answer session at Falcon Lodge Methodist Church Hall in Newdigate Road on Monday, July 28 between 4pm and 7pm. The Langley Consortium is made up of developers Homes England, Taylor Wimpey UK Ltd, Vistry Homes Ltd, William Davis and Bellway Home. It is set to build the majority of the 5,500 homes on the site and says 35 per cent will be 'affordable'.
