The Most Important Packers: No. 24 — Matthew Golden
The Green Bay Packers are expecting big things from rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden this season.
The Green Bay Packers went 11-6 last season, sweeping the NFC West and the AFC South along the way.
Overall, though, no one in the building was happy.
The Packers failed to build on their terrific finish to the 2023 campaign, settled for the No. 7 seed in the NFC playoffs, and lost a Wild Card game to eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia.
Afterwards, general manager Brian Gutekunst turned up the heat on everybody in the building.
'We need to continue to ramp up our sense of urgency,' Gutekunst said. 'I think it's time we started competing for championships.'
Those are fair expectations.
The Packers return 20 of 22 starters, and appear to have upgraded the roster via free agency and the draft. With several third and fourth year players trending upward, Green Bay should be poised to make a move.
'I think they're ready,' Gutekunst said.
Now, it's time for the Packers to prove their G.M. right.
Green Bay's first training camp practice is July 23. Between now and then I will count down the '30 Most Important Packers' heading into the 2025 campaign.
At No. 24 is rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden.No. 24
Matthew Golden, WR
Last season
Golden spent two years at Houston, where he caught 38 passes each season. He then transferred to Texas in 2024 where he had 58 receptions, nine TDs and averaged 17.0 yards per catch for a Longhorns team that reached the College Football Playoff Final 4.
From the midway point of the season, Golden became the biggest playmaker on the Longhorns' dynamic offense.
'Once they kind of realized what they had, then it just kind of took off,' Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst said of Golden's production.
Golden also returned kickoffs at both schools, finishing with 28 attempts, a 25.8 average and two touchdowns — both coming with Houston in 2023.
Golden then ran the 40-yard dash in 4.29 seconds at this year's NFL Combine, fastest among all the wideouts.Outlook
Green Bay's returning wideouts failed to make the jump in 2024 that many believed they would. The Packers also lost Christian Watson — their top deep threat — to a torn ACL in Week 18, an injury that's likely to sideline him much of 2025.
So the door is wide open for Golden to have a big role in Green Bay's offense this season.
Golden's 40-yard dash time is the fastest in team history. He has the ability to play all three receiver spots. And when Green Bay opens training camp on July 23, Golden is likely to begin with the No. 1 offense.
'I think because of the high school football and the way they throw it around, the 7-on-7s, and just some of the things have changed on the lower levels, guys are coming in and making an impact quicker,' Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said. 'And I certainly think Matthew has the opportunity to do that.'
The 5-foot-11, 191-pound Golden is at the Packers' 'Mendoza line' for wide receivers — meaning that's the shortest they can be. While Golden is undersized, though, Green Bay believes he can play both outside and in the slot thanks to his other physical gifts.
'I will say with the way (coach) Matt (LaFleur) and his staff are able to kind of be creative and use these guys, that gives me a lot of flexibility with what I'm looking at, too,' Gutekunst said. 'They do such a good job with scheming some of these guys and using them to their best ability. It does make it easier for me so we don't feel like we have to do this or we have to do that, that Matt and his staff will find a way to make these guys productive.'They Said It …
'You can't coach 4.29, or whatever they had him at. Anytime a guy is breaking sub 4.3s, you know he's legitimately fast. I think what's so attractive about a guy like Golden is not only is he fast, but he's got, I'd say elite hands.' — Packers coach Matt LaFleur on Golden'Golden? Yeah. Like him. Like him. Looks fast. Yeah. We'll see. Once we get out there, obviously, OTAs, you'll get a feel for him but I'm really excited to see how we progress through training camp and all that stuff the plays he's going to make. I'm fired up about it.' — Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich on Golden'He's going to be a speed threat right away. He is one of those guys that covering him from a man perspective is going to be extremely tough on teams. So when we get to some of those third-down things where people are trying to mug us up and we need somebody to get open fast, he can do that.' — Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst on Golden'I definitely understand the game so well to where I can tempo my routes so where I don't have to run full speed and I just know where my breaking points need to be, wherever the defender is. I got a lot in my game. I could play inside, play out. I could also take the top off, so whatever the team needs me to do, I'm definitely that guy they need to do that.' — Golden on what he can bring to Green Bay's offenseTHE TOP 30

UDFA named Arizona Cardinals' best candidate for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year
Pro Football picked a player as the best possibility to be Offensive Rookie of the Year. This player was the only option The Arizona Cardinals only selected one offensive player in the 2025 NFL draft. That was guard Hayden Conner in the sixth round. As such, the Cardinals have no shot at a rookie winning Offensive Rookie of the Year. But Pro Football Network, putting together a list of the best candidate from every NFL team to win Offensive Rookie of the Year, had to pick someone. As such, the player they named was the best option they could come up for Arizona. That player is undrafted rookie receiver Bryson Green. It's improbable to think that the Arizona Cardinals will produce the Offensive Rookie of the Year. Jonathan Gannon's side didn't draft a single skill-position player in the 2025 NFL Draft and only picked up one receiver and one tight end as undrafted free agents. Bryson Green was the lone wideout picked up and has the potential to be a big-bodied receiver who can add to the Cardinals' WR rotation. The 6'1', 207-pound pass catcher had 97 career receptions for 1,422 yards in his four years for the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Wisconsin Badgers, and fits the mold that Arizona has leaned towards in recent seasons. Putting together a list like this, PFN had to pick someone. Bryson is the best option, as the only other offensive skill player they signed as a rookie free agent was tight end Oscar Cardenas. Green has guaranteed salary to equal 18 weeks of the practice squad, so the Cardinals bank on him being with the team in 2025, but there is almost no shot he makes the active roster with Marvin Harrison Jr., Michael Wilson, Greg Dortch and Zay Jones filling four of the five or six receiver spots they will carry on the 53-man roster. On top of that, they have Xavier Weaver, who was on their active roster last year as a rookie free agent and 2024 sixth-round pick Tejhaun Palmer. They also signed Quez Watkins and Simi Fehoko this offseason, who have better chances to make the team than Green does. But is Green the best candidate for the Cardinals? Well, yes. That is the case. It just means they have the smallest possible chance to have this year's Offensive Rookie of the year, Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast. Bills' First-Round Pick Predicted to 'Disappoint' in Rookie Season
Bills' First-Round Pick Predicted to 'Disappoint' in Rookie Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Buffalo Bills selected cornerback Maxwell Hairston out of the University of Kentucky with the 30th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, but some are already doubting the young defensive back. Advertisement In a recent article by Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski, he puts together a list of this year's first-round picks who have the "potential to disappoint" in their rookie season, and one of the players he lists is the young Bills cornerback. "Hairston did deal with a shoulder issue throughout the 2024 campaign. Though this fact doesn't excuse his lack of physicality. Instead, it highlights his slight frame at a mere 183 pounds and how it'll handle an NFL pounding," Sobleski wrote. "The rookie will compete with veteran Tre'Davious White to start opposite Christian Benford. Hairston will get his far share of opportunities. When he does, expect some outstanding play and some head-scratching ones as well." Hairston used his speed at Kentucky to make his impact felt, but some scouts believe his decision-making is not quite as fast. But his stats in college show a bit of the reason the Bills took a chance on him in the first round. He played just seven games in his final season with the Wildcats, but his second season with the team was fantastic. He racked up an SEC-leading five interceptions, and he was also able to show his speed by taking two of them back to the house. Advertisement He might have to bulk up a bit to do so, but Hairston could be in a solid position to prove the doubters wrong and make an impact in his first year in the league. What Does Bills' James Cook Need To Justify New Contract?
What Does Bills' James Cook Need To Justify New Contract? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is still without his desired new contract, despite stating he wanted an extension months ago. Advertisement The Bills have since re-signed a host of key players such as Josh Allen, Khalil Shakir, and Greg Rousseau, but James and his reported want for $15 million APY have been left off the to-do list. He participated in mandatory minicamp and stated he will be at training camp; we just don't know in what capacity. Given the Bills have just $100,700 in cap space, a contract extension this offseason looks unlikely, but what about next offseason? Sure, but then Buffalo won't be the only team in for James' services. Now, we want all players to receive compensation that reflects their worth, as they deserve to be paid for the work they do to entertain fans. So, looking ahead to the 2025 season, what type of year would James need to have to warrant a contract of roughly $15 million APY? Advertisement ESPN's Mike Clay projects Cook to have 1,228 yards and 12 touchdowns, along with an extra 284 yards and two touchdowns as a receiver. Fans are left to wonder… Would that do it? Buffalo Bills running back James Cook (4).Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images It would mark a third straight season of 1,000+ yards and back-to-back seasons of 10+ rushing touchdowns, and that would also likely make it three straight Pro Bowls for the running back. Yeah, that'll likely do it. But if that eventuates, Cook will likely have a few teams chasing his signature next offseason, because he now has the skins on the wall for three years. Now, we think James should be paid this offseason, but it doesn't look like that will be happening. But do what Clay is projecting here, and James will get that monster new contract. Advertisement Because if it isn't Buffalo, someone else will give James what he feels he is worth.
