Records came tumbling down on the opening day of India's much-awaited Test series against England at Headingley, as the young generation showed they are ready to carry the weight left behind by legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
300+ runs on the first day of a tour for India
399/3 vs SL Galle 2017
372/7 vs SA Bloemfontein 2001
359/3 vs Eng Headingley 2025
356/2 vs Pak Multan 2004
302/4 vs WI North Sound 2016
India ended the day at 359 for 3, making it one of their biggest opening-day scores on foreign soil. Only four times before have India crossed 300 runs on Day 1 of a tour — Galle (2017), Bloemfontein (2001), Multan (2004) and North Sound (2016). This strong start once again proves how well India's top order adapts away from home.

and

both scored superb centuries on Day 1. This is only the third time in India's Test history that two batters have scored hundreds on the very first day of an overseas tour. The last time it happened was in 2017, when Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara did it in Galle, Sri Lanka. Before that, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag had done it in Bloemfontein, South Africa in 2001.

With this knock, he has now become the highest run-scorer among Asian wicketkeepers in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). His total of 1,732 runs puts him ahead of MS Dhoni, who scored 1,731 runs in these regions.
How Day 1 Unfolded
Ben Stokes
won the toss and chose to bowl first, hoping to make the most of helpful early conditions. KL Rahul gave India a solid base with 42, and his partner Jaiswal played some fearless shots to notch up his fifth Test century and his first in England.
Quiz:
Who's that IPL player?
There was a small hiccup when Rahul and debutant Sai Sudharsan fell quickly, but Gill and Pant made sure England did not gain any advantage. Gill, leading India as captain for the first time, batted with calm authority to remain unbeaten on 127 at stumps. Pant, known for his attacking style, ended the day with a towering six off Chris Woakes that summed up India's dominance.
With runs on the board and wickets in hand, India are firmly in control. England, missing big names like James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, had no answers to the confident stroke-play of India's young batters.
Heading into Day 2, India will look to pile up a huge first-innings score and put England under more pressure as the new World Test Championship cycle begins on an exciting note.

FIFA Club World Cup: Flamengo floor Chelsea, Bayern Munich edge out Boca Juniors
Flamengo came from behind to beat Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Cup. (AP) Flamengo produced a brilliant second-half fightback to beat Chelsea 3-1 at the Club World Cup on Friday and qualify for the last 16, while Bayern Munich joined them in reaching the knockout phase with a battling win over Boca Juniors. In Philadelphia, Pedro Neto gave Chelsea an early lead but Flamengo, roared on by their frenzied supporters who made up the majority of the 54,019 crowd, did not deserve to be behind and came roaring back in the second half. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Bruno Henrique came off the bench in the 56th minute and quickly equalised before setting up former Real Madrid, Manchester City and Juventus defender Danilo to make it 2-1. Chelsea were stunned, and their hopes of pulling level again were effectively destroyed when substitute Nicolas Jackson was sent off in the 68th minute for a dangerous tackle on Ayrton Lucas. Wallace Yan then sealed the victory for the Rio de Janeiro club, the Brazilian league leaders, when he made it 3-1 late on. "It was a special day for me and our club," said Flamengo coach Filipe Luis. "We knew we would have chances against Chelsea, because we have one way to play and they know how to follow that path." Flamengo have won both matches in Group D and their place in the knockout stage was confirmed later when Esperance of Tunisia defeated Los Angeles FC 1-0 in Nashville. Youcef Belaili scored the only goal of the game in the 70th minute in front of a sparse crowd featuring Nicole Kidman. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Concentrated Siberian Ginseng Extract 2oz Superior Ginseng Undo LAFC, who were last-minute qualifiers after beating Club America of Mexico in a play-off, cannot now progress further. Kane, Olise on target Chelsea and Esperance each have three points from two games and their meeting in Philadelphia next Tuesday will decide who joins Flamengo in advancing. "We expected a tough game because Flamengo is a very good team, with good players and a good manager," said Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca. "They play very well, and in Brazil they are top of the league, unbeaten for many games, so it was not a surprise for us." Flamengo's win followed Botafogo's stunning success against European champions Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday, continuing an impressive record for South American clubs at the competition. But Bayern's 2-1 win over Boca in Miami was the first time either a Brazilian or Argentinian team had lost in 10 matches since the tournament started. England star Harry Kane did not find the target when Bayern hammered New Zealand's Auckland City 10-0 in their opening game, but he opened the scoring in Miami with a clinical finish on 18 minutes. Boca's fans made up most of the 63,587 crowd and brought incredible passion and noise to the Hard Rock Stadium, spurring their team on to equalise in the 66th minute. Alan Velasco found Miguel Merentiel down the right and he powered goalwards, skipping around Josip Stanisic before producing a brilliant finish past Manuel Neuer in the Bayern goal. It looked like South American clubs' unbeaten record in the tournament so far was going to hold, but with six minutes remaining Michael Olise provided the decisive blow. After a scramble on the edge of the box, Kane found the France international with a delicate lay-off and Olise provided precision control with a superb finish into the corner to send Bayern through to the next round. "Big performance from the guys. We knew it wasn't going to be easy, we knew we were coming into a hostile environment," Kane told DAZN. "We have seen how tough it has been for European teams to play against the South American teams. I thought we did really well," added Bayern coach Vincent Kompany. Another weather delay Earlier, Benfica crushed Auckland City 6-0 in Orlando to boost their own hopes of progressing and eliminate the tournament's only Oceania representative. Angel Di Maria's two penalties bookended the victory for the Portuguese side, with Leandro Barreiro scoring a brace while Vangelis Pavlidis and Renato Sanches got their other goals. The game was the fourth in the past four days to be hit by a weather delay. The match was interrupted at half-time because of a storm, eventually resuming two hours later. A draw for Benfica against Bayern in Charlotte next Tuesday will send them through and eliminate Boca. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story. Watch Episode 1 here

9 Indian Cricketers With Most Centuries In World Test Championship: Rohit Sharma Leads, Shubman Gill Surpasses Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal Joins The Elite Club
photoDetails english 2919407 Updated:Jun 21, 2025, 11:28 AM IST Rohit Sharma – 9 Centuries 1 / 9 India's former captain has been a batting pillar in the WTC cycle, scoring nine Test centuries, the most by any Indian player in this phase. His dominance at home and consistent knocks overseas, especially against Australia and England, have kept India competitive. Rohit's patient yet impactful top-order presence continues to define his leadership era. Shubman Gill – 6 Centuries 2 / 9 Gill has emerged as the face of India's new generation, racking up six centuries, including a captaincy debut ton at Headingley. His runs have come in pressure situations across conditions, reflecting his adaptability and class. With the baton now officially passed, Gill's rise has been both timely and commanding. Virat Kohli – 5 Centuries 3 / 9 Kohli's five centuries in the cycle were instrumental early on, especially in anchoring the middle order. While his recent form has dipped slightly, his ability to score tough runs in Australia and South Africa kept India afloat in testing away tours. His legacy in the WTC remains significant. Yashasvi Jaiswal – 5 Centuries 4 / 9 Jaiswal's fearless strokeplay has made him a WTC star, scoring five centuries at an impressive pace. His latest hundred at Headingley highlighted his maturity and hunger for big scores, cementing his place as a long-term Test opener. Jaiswal is redefining aggression at the top. Rishabh Pant – 4 Centuries 5 / 9 Pant's four centuries have come at crucial junctures, often when India needed quick turnarounds or recoveries. His recent 65* and historic 3000-run milestone underlines his status as a game-changer. Known for thriving in SENA conditions, Pant blends flair with resilience. Mayank Agarwal – 4 Centuries 6 / 9 Mayank has silently built a solid record, with four centuries that often laid a stable foundation, especially at home. While not as consistent recently, his contributions in the early WTC phase were key to India's batting dominance in subcontinental conditions. KL Rahul – 3 Centuries 7 / 9 Rahul's three centuries have spanned home and away tours, showcasing his versatility as both opener and middle-order bat. His gritty hundred in England remains one of the best by an Indian in recent times, highlighting his ability to perform under fire. Ajinkya Rahane – 3 Centuries 8 / 9 A veteran of many Indian wins abroad, Rahane's three WTC hundreds came in pressure-filled settings. Though his form has been patchy, his leadership knock in Melbourne and his stabilizing innings in tricky chases remain vital WTC moments for India. Ravindra Jadeja – 3 Centuries 9 / 9 Jadeja's three centuries reflect his all-around evolution. His batting has gone from a support role to match-defining, especially in turning tracks and lower-order fightbacks. Jadeja's contributions have often helped India recover from batting collapses and seize momentum.
