After Pant Rejected Somersault, Gavaskar Reveals He 'Wanted To Do Backstand'
Last Updated:
Sunil Gavaskar has revealed that he was aiming to do a backstand on live broadcast after Rishabh Pant aborted the somersault celebration.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has revealed that he was planning to do a backstand after Rishabh Pant rejected to do the somersault celebration after scoring his second century of the Headingley Test on Tuesday (May 24). Speaking on the broadcast after the day's play, Gavaskar, 75, said that he used to do backstands when he was younger and was willing to show it to the world even at his age but 'wasn't able to'.
Pant did the somersault after scoring his century in the first innings of the Test. When he got to his second in the third innings — becoming the first Indian wicketkeeper to hit twin tons in a Test — Gavaskar was standing at the media balcony gesturing him to do it again. But Pant, perhaps tired or in pain, rejected and gestured that he'd do it later, before proceeding with a different celebration instead.
'You know what, I've got to confess that after that I came here and I, and I tried not to do the backflip, no chance of, at my age, but I used to do the backstand and I was looking to do the backstand," Gavaskar said on the Sony Sports Network. 'So if I could do it successfully then, then I would have shown it here, but I wasn't able to," he added.
Gavaskar, who has shared a love-hate relationship with Pant, said he was 'very happy' to see the wicketkeeper back up on his feet and giving joy to his family after his car crash two years ago.
'Very, very happy. I mean, anytime an Indian does well, you feel very happy because you know the passion for cricket in India, how just about every, in every family, I'm sure there is at least one person who, it might not be everybody, at least one person who follows the game. And therefore to make that family happy, if you can do well, if India does well, then naturally it is, it's a great feeling. And so to see this young kid, come back, I mean, look what had happened to him with all those, with that crash," he added.

Cracks opening up, Headingley is like a subcontinent pitch on Day 5, says KL Rahul as India eye famous win
Going into the final day of the first Test, there is plenty of intrigue around the Headingley pitch which hasn't showed any big signs of deteriorating. When Day 4 began it was lively before a few deliveries kept low as the day progressed with spinners getting some purchase from the rough. As England go into the final day needing 350 runs and India needing 10 wickets, and bit of showers predicted through the day, the Test is heading for a fitting climax. Off late the pitch has become batting friendly with teams comfortably chasing 300-plus totals. And India batsman KL Rahul, who scored a century at the top, revealed that the pitch reminded him of sub-continental conditions. 'I think the first two days, being as hot as it was, the pitch has taken a bit of beating,' Rahul said in an interview with Jiostar at stumps on Day 4. 'The crack seems like it's opening up. There's a bit of rough there, and the wicket is really dry. Mostly, it's like a subcontinent wicket on day five,' Rahul said. The opener who became the first Asian opener to score three centuries in England said India expect the hosts to come hard at them. 'Day five wicket won't be as easy, but knowing how England play and their style of cricket, they're going to come hard and try and score boundaries and try and score runs as quickly as possible. We need to keep that in the back of our heads and try and bowl as straight as we can. Try and be patient and really not give them those boundaries, make them earn their runs. It should be a very interesting day.' Hear from KL Rahul after his superb 137 in the second innings. 🔝🗣️#SonySportsNetwork #GroundTumharaJeetHamari #ENGvIND #NayaIndia #DhaakadIndia #TeamIndia — Sony Sports Network (@SonySportsNetwk) June 24, 2025 Rahul said the conditions on Day 4 were typically English where the ball seamed around in the morning. Even on Day 5, conditions are expected to be overcast which could bring the seamers very much into play. 'It was very different this morning. It almost felt like it was the first time we were actually in English conditions. The ball was seeming around, it was overcast. There was a bit happening from the wicket. 'The first couple of days when we batted, there wasn't much. There was a bit of swing in the air, but nothing off the pitch. But this morning it was a really good spell. I just felt like I needed to play tighter and make sure that we don't lose too many wickets and make sure that I kill the first session. I was trying to play as straight as possible. At least defend as straight as possible.'

Film body demands ban on Diljit Dosanjh for working with Pakistani actor Hania Aamir in Sardaar Ji 3
Amid growing Indo-Pak tensions following the recent Pahalgam terror attack, singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh's upcoming Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3 has found itself at the centre of a political and cinematic storm. The film features Pakistani actor Hania Aamir, prompting sharp backlash from key industry bodies, including calls for a blanket ban on Dosanjh's future projects in India. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) and the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) have both issued strong public statements condemning Dosanjh's decision to work with a Pakistani actor. FWICE President BN Tiwari criticised the collaboration, stating it disrespects Indian sentiments and the sacrifices of Indian soldiers. 'His preference for Pakistani talent over Indian artists raises serious questions about his loyalty,' Tiwari told news agency ANI, adding that a formal ban on Dosanjh's upcoming films and songs is imminent. Tiwari confirmed that the body had reached out to the producers of Sardaar Ji 3 seeking clarification but received no response. He warned that the film will face a ban in India if any plans are made to release it domestically. Currently, the film is set for an overseas-only release on June 27, with the trailer geo-blocked on YouTube for Indian audiences but accessible via Instagram. Echoing similar sentiments, AICWA announced a complete industry boycott of Dosanjh. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the association urged Indian production houses, music labels, and event organisers to sever all professional ties with the artist. 'We will approach various industry stakeholders to uphold this patriotic call,' AICWA said. This isn't the first time Indian film bodies have reacted strongly to collaborations with Pakistani talent. Following heightened political tensions in recent years, several bans have been imposed on Pakistani actors working in Indian films. The situation underscores how national security issues continue to influence the entertainment industry's business and cultural engagements. Note: Sardaar Ji 3 is the third instalment in the horror-comedy franchise headlined by Dosanjh. Directed by Amar Hundal, the film features Hania Aamir and Neeru Bajwa and is not slated for theatrical release in India as of now.

Indian cricket fraternity mourns death of Dilip Doshi
A 'heartbroken' Indian cricket fraternity came together in grief and reverence to pay tribute to former left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi, who died following a cardiac arrest in London. Despite spending much of his early career in the shadow of the great Bishan Singh Bedi, Doshi carved a niche for himself with his unwavering resolve. He died at the age of 77 on Monday. Leading the tributes for him was the great Sachin Tendulkar, who recalled his first meeting with the 'warm-hearted' Doshi during a tour of the UK in 1990. 'I met Dilip bhai for the first time in the UK in 1990, and he bowled to me in the nets on that tour. He was really fond of me, and I reciprocated his feelings. 'A warm-hearted soul like Dilip bhai will be deeply missed. I will miss those cricketing conversations which we invariably had. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti,' Tendulkar posted on X. Former India all-rounder and head coach Ravi Shastri, who shared the field with Doshi, remembered him as 'always immaculate, a gentleman to the core and a fine, fine bowler'. 'Heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace. Really sad to hear about the passing of Dilip Doshi.' Doshi made his Test debut in 1979 after Bedi's retirement and played the last of his 33 games in 1983. In those matches, he took 114 wickets with six five-wicket hauls and was exceptional at home during the first three seasons, completing 100 scalps in just 28 Tests. Bowled over! Former India cricketer and selector Sunil Joshi also a left-arm spinner like Doshi shared a poignant memory. 'Still can't believe it, we spoke just last Wednesday, and he sounded well. Heartbroken by the passing of Dilip Doshi Sir a legend on the field,a true gentleman off it, he meant a lot to me, and this loss is deeply personal. My heartfelt condolences to Nayan & the Doshi family,' Joshi tweeted. Former India captain Anil Kumble, who was among the first to pay his tribute to the late cricketer, too, expressed his sorrow: 'Heartbreaking to hear about Dilip bhai's passing. May God give strength to his family and friends to bear this loss. Nayan, thinking of you buddy.' Former Indian keeper-batter Parthiv Patel wrote, 'I'm heartbroken and still in shock about Dilip was truly special. Nayan (Doshi's son), thinking of you all with love and strength.' Manoj Tiwary echoed the collective sense of loss. 'It's a shock! India's legendary cricketer Dilip Doshi passed away at the age of 77 due to a cardiac arrest in London. May God give his family and close ones the strength to deal with this. May his soul rest in peace.' Former cricketers Pragyan Ojha and Harbhajan Singh also paid their respects. 'Saddened to hear about the passing of Dilip Doshi sir, a distinguished left-arm spinner who served Indian cricket with grace and grit. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace,' said Ojha. 'RIP Dilip Doshi sir Condolences to family,' Harbhajan wrote.
