Access road to KIA southern zone expected completion within this month, says Kota Sentosa rep
KUCHING (July 3): The access road to the southern zone of Kuching International Airport (KIA) is almost completed, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.
When updating the public on the status of its work progress, Yap said the physical progress of the project was at 95 per cent as of June 25.
Having been briefed by Public Works Department (JKR) Kuching Divisional Engineer Wang Say Kwang during a meeting yesterday, Yap in a statement highlighted the remaining works and their targeted completion dates.
'Road A/D Junction: 300 metres of road widening works are in progress and are targeted for completion by July 7; Road A (Sungai Kuap Bridge Approaches): 750 metres of road base construction from CH3+200 to CH3+950 is ongoing and targeted for completion by July 21; and Street Lighting, Substation and Traffic Light: Following verification of the substation platform by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) this week, all electrical systems will be energised, with all related works scheduled for completion by July 31,' he said.
A critical component of this project involves the Underpass Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system, which requires relocation of the existing AGL to a new vertical profile that complies fully with stringent aviation safety standards and, this includes raising 13 rows of AGL poles along the aircraft approach flight path, Yap said.
He added that due to the high level of technical complexity and safety considerations, this work required approvals from the Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd (MASB); Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) Kuching Office and; CAAM Division of Air Navigation Services and Aerodrome (ANSA) Kuala Lumpur.
'I am pleased to inform that the final approval from the CAAM Division of ANSA Kuala Lumpur was officially granted via email on July 1, 2025.
'This approval marks a significant milestone, enabling the contractor to proceed with the remaining AGL works and, the contractor has indicated that they will require approximately one month to complete these activities,' said Yap.
In line with the highest safety precautions, he said the road can only be opened to public use after the completion of the scheduled Flight Testing Window from this Sept 21 to 26, which is necessary to ensure that all airfield safety systems are fully operational and certified.
Yap said he has requested JKR to supervise and monitor the project contractor closely, now that all regulatory approvals have been secured, to ensure that all outstanding works are completed in a timely manner.
'I would like to ask for the patience and understanding of all road users and residents, as these final steps are critical to uphold aviation safety and public safety. It is our shared priority to ensure the road is opened safely for public use by the end of September 2025.

257 accidents, 22 fatalities recorded on Gerik–Jeli highway as of June 2025
KOTA BARU: From January to June this year, 257 accidents involving 442 vehicles were reported along the East-West Highway (JRTB) Gerik-Jeli. According to Gerik police chief Superintendent Abdul Samad Othman, the accidents included eight fatal cases, resulting in 22 deaths. Among the fatalities were 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), who were killed in a horrific accident on June 9. "The number of deaths reflects the total number of victims who died, as fatal accidents often involve more than one casualty. "For example, a fatal bus crash on June 9 alone claimed 15 lives, all of whom were students from UPSI," he said when contacted today. Abdul Samad added that the 442 vehicles involved in the accidents included 287 cars, followed by 55 multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) or vans, 42 motorcycles, 38 pickup trucks, 17 lorries, and three buses. On July 22, Bernama reported that, according to the 2024 traffic census by the Public Works Department, the JRTB route remains at a good level of service, with its current configuration able to accommodate the present traffic volume. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi reportedly said that a total daily traffic volume of 2,409 vehicles was observed on the JRTB route, with heavy vehicles accounting for 751 vehicles, or 31.2 per cent of the total. "The JRTB route is categorised as hilly terrain, with its alignment designed to follow the contours and topography of the Titiwangsa mountain range. "Its geometric design as the two-lane single carriageway has met the required technical and functional standards for its construction," he said. To improve road safety, Public Works Department director-general Datuk Roslan Ismail said the department has implemented a blackspot treatment programme under its Road Safety Infrastructure Upgrade initiative. Since 2018, 16 accident-prone locations along the route have been identified. "The approach is based on the principle of 'Low Cost, High Impact.' If the treatment method applied is appropriate to the type of accident occurring, the accident rate at those blackspot locations can be reduced at relatively low cost," he said.

Thanks to the Malaysia-China Talent Development Programme, 10 Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) students will pursue a Bachelor of Metallurgical Engineering micro-credential programme, spending the first two years here, followed by another two years at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB). The other recipients will take up bachelor's degrees in accountancy, finance, investment, electrical and electronics engineering, mechanical engineering, and mechatronics, including four students from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). Northern Coastal Highway to boost Sarawak connectivity by 2030
LIMBANG: The Northern Coastal Highway (NCH) project is set to transform connectivity and development in northern Sarawak, according to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The initiative, covering Lawas and Limbang, aims to integrate regions currently separated by Brunei Darussalam. Nanta highlighted the project's significance during a technical meeting in Limbang, involving teams from the Sarawak and Federal Public Works Departments (JKR), the Ministry of Works, and RECODA. 'This reflects strong collaboration between the Federal and Sarawak state governments,' he said. The NCH will provide a domestic route linking Miri, Limbang, and Lawas without passing through Brunei, reducing reliance on the Miri–Temburong–Limbang route, which currently requires four immigration checks. 'This will enhance mobility, ease daily life, and unlock economic opportunities for rural communities,' Nanta added. Key components include an 87.96 km new road, 10.16 km of access roads, 27 main structures (including 13 bridges), 44 bus stops, and four Rest & Service Areas. Five sections under Phase 1 are underway, with completion expected by 2030. Nanta emphasized the broader impact: 'This project supports the economy, tourism, logistics, and improves well-being.'
