Austrian police search for answers after mass shooting in school
GRAZ, Austria, June 11 (Reuters) - Austrian authorities were searching on Wednesday for answers to why a 21-year-old gunman shot 10 people in a rampage at his former high school before killing himself, one of the worst outbreaks of violence in the country's modern history.
Police said the man, armed with a shotgun and a pistol, acted alone. They are scouring his home and the internet for clues to why he opened fire on the school in Austria's second city of Graz on Tuesday, before shooting himself in a bathroom.
Police added that a pipe bomb found at his home was not functional.
Some Austrian media have said the young man, who has not been identified, apparently felt bullied, though police have yet to confirm this. Austrian authorities said the suspect never completed his studies at the school.
He left a farewell note that did not reveal the motive for the attack, police said.
Franz Ruf, director general of public security, said investigations into the motive were moving swiftly.
"We don't want to speculate at this point," he told national broadcaster ORF on Tuesday night.
Around 17 minutes elapsed between the first emergency calls received by police about shots being fired at the school and the scene being declared safe, Ruf said.
Details of the attack have emerged slowly.
Austrian police said victims were found both outside and inside the school, on various floors. About a dozen people were injured in the attack, some seriously.
Austria declared three days of national mourning, with the shootings prompting a rare show of solidarity among often bitterly divided political parties. Parents of pupils and neighbours of the school struggled to make sense of the event.
Hundreds came together in Graz's main square on Tuesday evening to remember the victims. Others left flowers and lit candles outside the school. Dozens also queued to donate blood for the survivors.

Public Services Card database of millions of Irish people's faces declared illegal
The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has found that the collection of facial (biometric) data for the Public Services Card (PSC) is unlawful. The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) said it partially welcomes the findings, but said the decision is "more than a decade late and inadequate". On Thursday, the DPC found that the Department of Social Protection (DSP) unlawfully collected facial records (biometric data) from 70 per cent of the population of Ireland over 15 years. In addition, the ICCL said the department failed to tell people why it was collecting their facial records and whether it was legal. In light of the infringements discovered by the DPC, it reprimanded the Department of Social Protection by issuing administrative fines totalling €550,000. It also issued an order to the department requiring it to cease processing of biometric data in connection with SAFE 2 registration within nine months of this decision if the department cannot identify a valid lawful basis. Advertisement Deputy commissioner, Graham Doyle, said: 'It is important to note that none of the findings of infringement identified, nor the corrective powers exercised by the DPC, pertain to the rollout of SAFE 2 registration by the DSP as a matter of principle. "The DPC did not find any evidence of inadequate technical and organisational security measures deployed by the DSP in connection with SAFE 2 registration in the context of this inquiry. "This inquiry was concerned with assessing whether the legislative framework presently in place for SAFE 2 registration complies with the requirements of data protection law and whether the DSP operates SAFE 2 registration in a data protection-compliant manner, and the findings announced today identify a number of deficiencies in this regard.' 'Illegal facial database' The ICCL said the Data Protection Commission failed to take decisive action on Thursday and said that, after 15 years, its actions are not enough. It has also called for the department and the DPC to explain to the Oireachtas and the public how this system was permitted to operate unlawfully for so long. Executive Director of ICCL, Joe O'Brien, said: 'For many years, ICCL and our colleagues at Digital Rights Ireland, have argued that the PSC's mandatory use of facial recognition technology is unlawful. 'This is a partial win for the privacy and data protection rights of people living in Ireland. It confirms what we have advocated for, for many years - that the Public Services Card, which was estimated to have cost the State €100 million, trespassed upon human rights and infringed EU and Irish law. 'The DPC decision is over a decade late and does not go far enough. The Department effectively created a de facto national biometric ID system by stealth over 15-plus years without a proper legal foundation. This illegal database of millions of Irish people's biometric data must be deleted.'

Four arrests have been made following the disorder, including a 16-year-old girl who has been charged with assaulting a police officer. She has been released on bail and is due to appear in court at a later date. Shocking footage shows a white Fiat 500 speeding down the road with its boot door wide open. In the video, the car - which had a missing bumper and an open boot - can be seen reversing down the road. After pacing up and down the street, the vehicle sped onto the pavement and began doing donuts on a local lawn. The Fiat was driven by a group of masked youths, who can be seen dangling out of the car's windows. Meanwhile, a black car tried to pass through the chaos but was forced to repeatedly stop due to the Fiat's erratic driving. Bins had also been laid out across the road, making it even more difficult for vehicles to pass. In a separate video, several youths can be seen stalking the street on motorbikes and hanging from another black vehicle. The yobs also set fire to a vehicle and smashed the windscreen of one of a cop car. Shocking moment girls aged 15, 16 and 17 surround 75-year-old man in the street and beat him to death while filming on mobile phone - as they admit killing
This is the shocking moment three teenage girls beat a 75-year-old man to death in a vicious street attack that was filmed on a mobile phone. Never seen before CCTV footage shows the youths, aged 15, 16, and 17, pushing, shoving, and kicking Fredi Rivero by a bus stop in Islington, north London. The oldest girl was also seen to punch the victim in the head causing him to fall backwards onto the pavement. Mr Rivero, who had just got off a bus, suffered a severe head injury and went into cardiac arrest during the unprovoked attack on February 27 this year. The Bolivian national was taken to the Royal London Hospital where he died in the early hours of February 28. The three girls, who were seen staggering around with a vodka bottle, were arrested shortly after the attack. Police later discovered that one of them had filmed the horrific assault on her mobile phone. In the footage the 17-year-old can be heard shouting: 'I don't care' and 'why are you chatting to little girls bruv'. She then said: 'Hit me I f***** dare you.' Bystanders said the girls began telling them Mr Rivero had been harassing them but he did not appear to have done anything. On Thursday, the teens, who cannot be identified because of their ages, appeared at the Old Bailey before Judge Judy Khan KC. The girls, who attended via video link, pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Judge Khan ordered reports and remanded the defendants into custody to be sentenced on September 5. Previously, police have said Mr Rivero was a 'much-loved father' whose family were 'devastated by his death'. Mr Rivero's daughter, ex-wife and cousins attended court for the hearing on Thursday. Detective Inspector Devan Taylor, Specialist Crime said:'Mr Rivero was a much-loved family man who died in a truly tragic incident. 'I know how much his death has impacted those close to him and the wider community. 'I would like to offer my heart-felt sympathy to Mr Rivero's family for their loss and express my admiration for the dignity they have shown throughout the investigation. Mr Rivero was attacked in the Islington area of north London (pictured) at around 11.35pm on February 27 'I also wish to thank the members of public who went to Mr Rivero's aid as he lay injured. 'The young defendants have now accepted they were responsible for the killing of Mr Rivero, in what was a senseless and completely out of the blue attack on a lone elderly man. 'The age of the defendants adds to the devastating nature of this incident and they will now have to deal with the enormity of their actions.'
