‘Intraterrestrials' In Earth's Deep Subsurface Defy Life As We Know It

In the tantalizing quest to find extraterrestrial life beyond our own solar system, or at least beyond Earth, we often forget the myriad ways in which life has evolved within our own planet's deep subsurface. In truth, Earth is loaded with subsurface intraterrestrial microbial life --- much of it bizarre beyond belief.
In her new book, 'Intraterrestrials: Discovering the Strangest Life on Earth,' Karen G. Lloyd, a microbial biogeochemist at the University of Southern California, deftly leads us through her years-long global quest to understand the inner workings of these subsurface microbes.
It's a fascinating take on this little-known hidden biosphere deep below the surface, which literally starts our feet and continues into parts unknown. Apparently, there's a lot of fertile ground above the crust-mantle boundary, which is where subsurface life thrives, Lloyd notes. And no matter how deep we drill, we've never reached a place underneath the sea floor, or even in the deepest subterranean mines where some sort of microbial life hasn't been found.
As for the term 'intraterrestrial'?
It was actually coined by biogeochemist Karsten Pederson to describe life within Earth's crust. However, in the last four decades, Lloyd and colleagues have learned that these intraterrestrials can thrive without photosynthesis, without the Sun, simply from geochemical reactions deep within the Earth. They can breathe rocks and sometimes live for thousands, perhaps millions of years.
Lloyd has been tracking these strange microbes at the bottom of oceans, inside volcanoes and deep within the Antarctic permafrost.
Tale Of Two Biospheres
These subsurface intraterrestrials can roughly be divided into two main types, she writes. The first depends on chemosynthesis rather than photosynthesis, the process by which living organisms make biomass from pure chemical reactions using no sunlight. The second type eats leftovers produced from photosynthesis that trickle down from Earth's surface.
As Lloyd repeatedly makes clear, they seem to thrive on chemicals produced by rocks under the influence of great heat and pressure. Intraterrestrials use these chemicals to gain energy and build their bodies, just like plants do using sunlight at the surface, she notes.
How is the research community advancing this relatively new field of intraterrestrial research?
Arguably, the most ambitious remains Japan's ship Chikyu which was designed to drill through Earth's crust and into our mantle.
The mantle is the 2900 km-wide swath of dense rock that makes up 60% of the planet, bounded by Earth's inner core and the 7000 km outer layer of our planetary crust. Drilling into the mantle is a feat that's never been achieved, but the Chikyu has drilled up to 1.2 km into the sea floor off the coast of Japan. Yet as Lloyd acknowledges, it will have to drill a few more kilometers further through the thinnest part of the crust to reach Earth's mantle.
If life is found in Earth's mantle, that would likely change astrobiology in untold ways.
Because who could argue that any given planet, no matter how seemingly inhospitable, couldn't harbor some sort of life? That goes for planets within our own solar system, including subterranean Mars, maybe even subterranean Venus, which to date, has been extraordinarily difficult to explore.

Radiation Loving Bacteria
One of the oddest species is a radiation-loving bacterium that holds the record for the deepest life yet found on Earth. It was found thriving 2.8 km deep below the surface in a South African gold mine. Dubbed Desulforudis audaxviator, it apparently eats the reaction products of pure radiation and water.
Intraterrestrial Life's Perplexing Longevity
Some intraterrestrials almost appear to be in stasis, but yet are not.
The fact that living cells likely exist in a nongrowth state for very long timescales raises two important questions, Lloyd writes. Are these microbes evolutionarily adapted to hang out in this undead, dormant state for thousands or millions of years, Lloyd wonders, or do they just persist because cells don't need any special adaptations to stay alive for so long?
The Bottom Line?
Above all, the author gives us a completely new appreciation of how deep life is embedded in our own planet. But if they're here, why won't they also be abundant on myriads of far-flung extrasolar worlds? These could be planets that may not be suitable for bipedal species like our own but would make a perfect habitat for intraterrestrials.
That's a sobering thought. Because it means that such subsurface life may never impact their home planet's atmosphere enough to make their presence detectable via biosignatures.
Dreams of taking a reliable census of exoplanetary life in the galaxy may thus inherently be extremely limited. Such life may not be life as we know it. But, more crucially, even with our best telescopes these extrasolar intraterrestrials may never be readily detectable.

Your Heart May Be Older Than You Think

Some people are said to have old souls. Some may have old hearts, too. Many Americans, particularly men with less education, lower income, and those from certain minority groups, have a 'heart age' that is much older than what the calendar may indicate, according to a new tool developed by researchers at Northwestern University and published on July 30 in JAMA Cardiology . Sadiya Khan, MD, a cardiologist at Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, in Chicago, and her colleagues wanted to simplify how clinicians communicate cardiovascular risk to patients, making it easier to interpret and understand. 'It's really important that risk is used in how we manage patients in preventive cardiology, but it can be really challenging to interpret the results,' she said. 'What does a 7.5% 10-year risk mean, for example?' Khan and her colleagues developed a tool to calculates a person's 'heart age' based on known cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and smoking status. A 50-year-old with several high-risk factors could have a heart age that is equivalent to a 65-year-old with an optimal risk profile — a revelation that may help prompt them to take action on reducing their risk, Shah said. Risk age calculations are not new — the European Society of Cardiology's 2021 guidelines on prevention of cardiovascular disease allow such predictions, and they were also developed for the Framingham risk model. But Khan wanted to update the concept using the newer American Heart Association's PREVENT equations, and to take advantage of the growing public awareness of healthy aging. To evaluate the tool Khan's team tested it on more than 14,000 US adults aged 30-79 with no history of cardiovascular disease, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. On average, women in the survey had a chronological age of 51.3 years, but a heart age of 55.4 years, whereas for men the disparity was even greater: an average chronological age of 49.7 years but an average heart age of 56.7 years. Socioeconomic factors, such as education and income, also had a big effect on heart age. Among those with a high school education or less, more than one fifth of women, and nearly one third of men, had a heart age more than 10 years older than their true age. The gap was also significantly wider among members of certain racial and ethnic minorities. Black men had a heart age 8.5 years older than their true age vs 7.9 years older for Hispanic men, 6.7 years older for Asian men, and 6.4 years older for White men. The gaps were 6.2 years for Black women, 4.8 years for Hispanic women, 3.7 years for White women, and 2.8 years for Asian women, according to the researchers. 'I think some of the social factors that we highlighted where an individual's heart age might be older than their actual age, while not surprising, are helpful to see the health of the nation,' Khan said. The authors of an editorial accompanying the journal article wrote the new tool 'reframes risk in a more intuitive, personally relevant way' and combines epidemiology with behavioral psychology. 'This strategy taps into an intuitive grasp of time and aging, a concept more emotionally salient than a probabilistic 10-year risk estimate and may help bridge the persistent gap between knowledge of risk and engagement in health-promoting behavior,' they wrote. Presenting risk in this way could be particularly useful for younger people, whose lower absolute risk means they seldom think about ways they can improve their cardiovascular health, according to Khan and her colleagues. The team has created a free online version of the heart age calculator, but Khan said it is intended to be used in consultation with a physician. 'Our goal is not to have this be patient-facing but to have it be targeted to clinicians to help support that patient-clinician discussion,' she said. 'A tool like this is only as useful as the conversation that follows about the opportunities to promote or maintain heart health in optimizing your heart age.' Khan reported no relevant financial conflicts of interest.

A Rare Flu Complication Is Killing More U.S. Children

A rare, life-threatening complication caused by the flu seems to be surging among kids. Research out today finds that dozens of children developed influenza-associated acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE) over the past two years, a third of whom died as a result. Researchers at Stanford Medicine led the study, published Thursday in JAMA. Collecting reports from other doctors and hospitals across the country, they identified 41 cases of ANE since 2023, along with 11 deaths. The researchers argue that the condition should be systemically tracked in the U.S. from now on. Flu Cases Are Surging—Here's Why This Season Is So Unusual 'ANE occurs when the body's immune response to influenza triggers widespread brain inflammation, particularly targeting the thalamus—a critical brain region that controls consciousness and many vital functions,' study author Keith Van Haren, a pediatric neurologist at Stanford Medicine, told Gizmodo. 'Children are disproportionately affected, possibly due to their developing immune systems and genetic factors.' ANE is typically very rare, with Van Haren and his colleagues usually only seeing a single case every few years. But earlier this January, they came across several at their center. They also heard reports of increased cases from nearby pediatric centers in the state. Curious, the team issued a nationwide call to infectious disease and flu specialists for any and all recent reports of ANE. All told, they documented cases from 23 hospitals dating back to October 2023. This spike is likely tied to the circulation of more severe flu strains seen during that time. 'While we can't definitively prove an increase in ANE cases, the clustering of reports and severe flu season designation suggest this may represent a genuine rise,' Van Haren said. The median age of these cases is five years, with most involving children who had no preexisting health conditions. In addition to the 11 deaths, roughly two-thirds of children developed moderate to severe disability that was still present 90 days later. Notably, only 16% of victims were vaccinated against the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also received a glut of ANE reports during the recent 2024-2025 flu season. But in a February paper that examined historical data going back 15 years, CDC scientists couldn't conclusively determine whether this past season represented a real spike in cases. Both the CDC report and the current study authors note that influenza-associated encephalopathy in general (ANE being the most severe form) isn't a nationally notifiable condition, meaning doctors aren't obligated to report cases to health departments. So if nothing else, Van Haren and his team are pushing for that to change, since better tracking would make it easier to spot rising cases moving forward. 'Typically, the U.S. CDC is best situated to undertake these efforts, which involve a high degree of collaboration across hospitals and public systems around the country,' Van Haren said. Unfortunately, that might be easier said than done for the time being. The current Trump administration has hollowed out its public health agencies, with the CDC in particular having shed nearly one-quarter of its staff this year. RFK Jr.'s Baseless Purge of CDC Vaccine Panel Alarms Public Health Experts Van Haren is hopeful that clinical trials in the future will figure out which immunotherapies work best for ANE, since there's no clearly established optimal treatment as of yet. And dire as the overall public health situation is, there is something we can all do to further lower the rare danger of ANE: Get the seasonal flu vaccine. 'The most important message is prevention: seasonal influenza vaccination significantly reduces the risk of severe complications like ANE,' Van Haren said. 'Parents should ensure their children receive annual flu vaccines and seek immediate medical attention for any child with flu symptoms who develops altered mental status, seizures, or severe neurological changes.' For now, at least, the White House hasn't directly gone after the flu shot, though Health Secretary RFK Jr. did recently sign off on removing a small minority of flu vaccines containing thimerosal, an ingredient antivaxxers have long and wrongly blamed for causing autism.
