Nestlé India sees ‘stabilization' in packaged goods market after soft demand

Mint11 hours ago

The packaged goods industry is stabilizing after a period of soft demand, said Suresh Narayanan, Nestlé India's outgoing chairman and managing director, on Thursday.
While addressing shareholders at the company's 66th annual general meeting (AGM), Narayanan noted that high food inflation had negatively impacted volumes for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturers.
'There has been an overall slowdown in the consumer goods space because of food inflation, evolution of real incomes, unemployment and various other global maladies that have also affected us. Happy to report that things are stabilizing; food inflation clearly impacted our business,' he said.
He acknowledged that commodity inflation has affected the company's volume-led growth, but expects gradual improvement.
Commodities like coffee and cocoa are at elevated levels, at decadal highs, and that clearly puts enormous pressure on managing both penetration-led growth and the company's bottom line.
'There have been short-term pressures. But hopefully we will be getting back to the normal stride in the coming quarters…in the coming months,' he said during his last virtual AGM. Narayanan is set to retire on 31 July.
The company deploys a combination of cost-saving measures, nearly 2% annually, along with buying efficiencies to tide itself over periods of high inflation.
'Sadly, we have had to make quite a few price increases. That clearly has a short-term impact on volumes. Going forward, we would not like to use price increases wherever we can,' he said.
Nestlé sells a range of products in India, including chocolates, milk, ketchup, cooking aids, infant nutrition, cereals, curd, noodles, coffee, and pet food.
Higher prices for key raw materials like coffee, milk, and cocoa directly impact the company's margins. For instance, in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year, average prices for Arabica coffee were up 97%, while Robusta prices rose 65% year-on-year.
Narayanan said high prices and Nestlé's price hikes impacted the milk and nutrition category, which accounts for 37.9% of its total sales. The company sells packaged milk, yoghurt, and ready-to-drink coffee.
'Overall, food inflation has been quite significant. That obviously has led to strained price lines as far as some of our brands are concerned. We have therefore looked at a series of cost-saving and efficiency initiatives, and only after that, initiated any price increases in a responsible manner to ensure category growth remains. The impact certainly is coming down,' he added.
He also noted that the divestment of the healthcare business to Dr Reddy's Laboratories Ltd will partly reflect in the category's performance.
To be sure, several large packaged consumer companies have been pointing to a stress in urban consumption over the last few quarters.
The Indian FMCG industry reported 11% on-year value growth in the March quarter, driven by a 5.1% volume increase and a 5.6% price hike, according to data released by NielsenIQ. Urban market growth decelerated in the quarter, while rural markets saw an 8.4% volume increase, a little less than the December quarter.
On Thursday, the company announced its first-ever bonus share issue.
Additionally, it recommended a final dividend of ₹ 10 per equity share on its 964,157,160 equity shares for 2024-25.
In the fiscal year, the maker of Maggi noodles and KitKat chocolate reported a total income of ₹ 20,260.42 crore. Its capital expenditure rose from 1.8% of sales in 2015 to 10% of sales in the fiscal year ended March 2025.
Narayanan mentioned that the company has committed ₹ 6,500 crore in capex between 2020 and 2025, with approximately ₹ 5,600 crore already spent. Its upcoming factory in Odisha will involve an investment of about ₹ ₹ 950 crore.
Addressing a shareholder query regarding inventory build-up, he said inventories have almost doubled due to higher stock covers of green coffee.
'As you know, coffee has been on a rampage at 60 to 70 year highs, so we have taken a slightly longer position in the coverage of coffee, which has entailed a greater use of working capital and built derivatives as well—there has been an increase. All of this will get absorbed as we go forward in the operations,' he added.

India closely monitoring China-Pakistan-Bangladesh trilateral

New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that it is keeping a constant watch on developments in India's neighbourhood, especially in light of the recent trilateral meeting involving China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Speaking at a press briefing, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, 'We maintain a constant watch on the developments in our neighbourhood that have a bearing on our interests and our security, our relations with individual countries, while they stand on their own footing, take into account the evolving context as well.' The meeting held on June 19 in Yunnan, China, took place on the sidelines of the 9th China-South Asia Exposition and the 6th China-South Asia Cooperation Forum. It was attended by Bangladesh's acting foreign secretary Ruhul Alam Siddique, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, and Pakistan's Additional Secretary (Asia Pacific) Imran Ahmed Siddiqui. Pakistan's foreign secretary to China, Amna Baloch, participated via video link, as reported by Daily Star. As reported by The Daily Star, Bangladesh called it an 'informal meeting', Pakistan termed it as 'the inaugural meeting of the trilateral mechanism'. In their statements, China and Pakistan stated that the three sides agreed to explore and implement cooperation projects in areas such as trade, maritime affairs, climate change, agriculture, human resources, education, and culture. When asked about India's recent restriction imposed on trade with Bangladesh, the MEA spokesperson said that the decisions were based on 'Bangladesh's own quest for fairness, equal treatment and reciprocity.' 'The trade-related amendments announced by India in respect of Bangladesh were based on Bangladesh's own quest for fairness, equal treatment and reciprocity. We await resolution of the underlying issues pending with the Bangladeshi side for a long time, these issues have been raised by India at several structured meetings earlier, including at the Commerce Secretary level talks,' Jaiswal said. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry imposed restrictions on imports from Bangladesh through land ports after Bangladesh imposed import restrictions on Indian staples like yarn and rice. According to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), India's restrictions on imports from Bangladesh via land ports will impact goods worth USD 770 million, accounting for nearly 42 per cent of total bilateral imports. The move limits the entry of products such as ready-made garments and processed foods to specific seaports, an official press release by the Ministry stated and is widely viewed as a response to Bangladesh's recent curbs on Indian yarn, rice, and other goods, along with its decision to impose a transit fee on Indian cargo, marking a shift from previously cooperative trade relations. Under the new directive, all kinds of ready-made garments from Bangladesh can now only be imported through Nhava Sheva and Kolkata seaports, with entry through land ports no longer permitted. (ANI)

How Ceasefire Between Iran And Israel Saved India's Rs 47,000 Crore Bet And Cornered Pakistan

New Delhi: Guns falling silent in West Asia brought more than a diplomatic relief for India. It saved a critical investment – Rs 47,16,53,21,335 to be exact. That is the amount New Delhi has poured into Iran's Chabahar Port and related trade corridors. When missiles flew between Iran and Israel, that money stood at the edge of a cliff. Now, it is back on solid ground. The ceasefire could not have come at a better time. Not just for regional peace, but for India's long game. Chabahar is not merely a port. It is a strategic lifeline. It links India to Afghanistan, Central Asia and even Russia. It is a direct counter to China's Belt and Road, and a way to bypass Pakistan completely. India's Stakes Were Massive India's involvement in Chabahar has grown steadily. A direct investment of $85 million. A credit line of $150 million through EXIM Bank. Another $400 million promised for the railway to Zahedan. Together, nearly $550 million or over Rs 47,000 crore. The 2024 deal to operate the Shahid Beheshti Terminal for 10 years was a landmark moment. India Ports Global Limited (IPGL), a joint venture between JNPT and Deendayal Port, manages the terminal in partnership with Iran's Arya Banader. Big Indian companies like Adani and Essar have also expressed interest. That shows how serious India is about locking down Chabahar. Chabahar – Safe, For Now During the war, fears mounted that Chabahar could become a casualty. India worried that a direct hit could undo years of planning and investment. And if the United States stepped up pressure on Iran, sanctions might have shut down operations altogether. But Chabahar came through unscathed. No Israeli bombs. No damage. For India, that is a diplomatic jackpot. The port remains intact. The International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) remains alive. Regional trade plans remain on track. Pakistan's Plan Derailed Again For decades, Afghanistan leaned on Pakistan's Karachi Port for sea access. But today's Taliban-led Kabul is searching for options. Chabahar fits that need. It offers a direct connection to sea routes via Iran. With Iran calm, Afghanistan is exploring closer ties to the INSTC as well. That could reduce its dependence on Pakistan even further. If Central Asian countries support the INSTC, Pakistan's grip on regional trade could weaken fast. Had the war dragged on, Pakistan might have regained influence. But now, that door seems to be closing. India's Window of Opportunity India and Iran have been talking frequently. At the 19th Foreign Office Consultations in January 2025, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding Chabahar and the INSTC. Challenges remain. Western sanctions could return. Any future flare-up in the Gulf could disrupt trade again. But for now, diplomacy has bought time. India gains on two fronts – its investment in Chabahar is safe and Pakistan's role in regional trade continues to shrink. This could be India's moment to boost its presence in Central Asia, deepen trade ties and cement its role as a regional power broker.
