KSEB detects power irregularities worth Rs 40 crore in 2024-25
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The KSEB continues to be plagued by power theft and allied irregularities. The Anti-Power Theft Squad (APTS) of the board detected 4,252 cases of irregularities, including theft, wherein 4.7 crore units of power were siphoned off during the 2024-25 financial year. The collective drain resulted in the board picking up a pecuniary loss of Rs 40.6 crore.
As per the APTS documents accessed by TNIE, Rs 24 crore was remitted by the offenders to the board so far. The APTS, led by Prasanthan Kani B K IPS, detected the irregularities after conducting 31,213 inspections across the state.
The APTS detected 288 cases of power theft, which cost the board 12.5 lakh units of power. The assessed loss due to theft was Rs 2.27 crore, while Rs 2.6 crore was recovered, which included compounding fees also. Going by the documents, power theft was mostly reported in the northern districts. In March, 1.43 lakh units of power were reported stolen in the state. Of that, the northern districts accounted for 1.33 lakh units. As many as 41,000 cases were reported from Kasaragod district, while Malappuram had 39,000 cases.
However, it's other malpractices such as unauthorised load, unauthorised extension and tariff misuse that hurt the board in a big way. About 3.7 crore units were lost this way and the assessed loss is about Rs 34 crore. In the case of these malpractices, the southern districts trumped the northern districts. In March, about 59 lakh units were assessed to have been lost to malpractices, of which the contribution of southern districts was 46 lakh units. Short assessment also contributed enormously to the loss, pegged at 86 lakh units, which translates to Rs 4.5 crore.

Parents of a 12- year-old child who allegedly worked as a child labour at Rajkot in Gujarat have filed a police complaint against his employers at Kalna police station in West Bengal's Bardhaman district, alleging severe torture during the child's stay in Gujarat. The Trinamool Cogress leadership accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of Gujarat of perpetuating child labour. 'In PM @narendramodi 's Double Engine state Gujarat, child labour is not only perpetuated but also accompanied by dehumanising treatment! .... a young child from Kalna, was forced to work in a jewellery factory in Gujarat, where he was brutally assaulted, resulting in severe injuries and lasting trauma,' the Trinamool Congress tweeted. Trinamool Congress leader Purba Bardhaman Swapan Debnath met the family of the child and expressed support to the family. The West Bengal government claims that there are no instances of child labour in the state, though children from Odisha and Bihar have been rescued from brick kilns in the State. Several teenagers from West Bengal have also been rescued from jewellery making units of Tamil Nadu where they were working as ' bonded labours'.

Kidnapped in Iran on way to Australia, three Punjab men rescued: Embassy
Three men from Punjab, who had left for Australia on the promise of jobs by travel agents but found themselves in Iran and were later 'kidnapped' there, have been rescued, the Embassy of India in Iran Wednesday said. Truck burnt by mob in Gzb, police say it was carrying cow meat
Ghaziabad: A truck transporting meat was set ablaze by right-wing activists in the Bhojpur area on Tuesday night. The group that stopped the truck accused the driver of carrying beef and assaulted him and his helper before handing them over to the cops. ACP Modinagar Gyan Prakash Rai said the truck was stopped around 8pm on the Pilkhuwa-Modinagar road after it had crossed Faridnagar. A police team from Bhojpur that reached the spot with a veterinary expert found a cow hide in the truck, following which the driver and helper were taken into custody. "The driver, Waseem, told cops the meat was loaded in Hapur and was headed for Mohali. Waseem and his helper Imraan have been booked under relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960," the ACP said. Samples of the meat and hide have been sent for further tests. Cops said around a hundred people, including members of VHP and Bajrang Dal, had gathered on the road after they got information that a truck carrying banned cow meat was headed to the area. After intercepting it, the mob pulled out the driver and his helper and assaulted the two. They also lobbed stones at the vehicle and hit it with sticks.
