Kidnapped in Iran on way to Australia, three Punjab men rescued: Embassy

Amritpal Singh (23) from Bhagowal village in Hoshiarpur, Husanpreet Singh (27) of Dhuri in Sangrur and Jaspal Singh (32) of Langroya in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar — all in Punjab — were 'freed in a police operation against the hostage takers in Varamin in south Tehran,' Iran's Tasnim news agency reported Tuesday.
All three had left for Australia in April with work visas after being promised lucrative jobs there by the travel agents back home in Punjab. They ended up in Iran where they were allegedly kidnapped by a network of travel agents from Pakistan who then demanded a ransom of Rs 18 lakh each for their release.
The respective families received phone calls from the three men Tuesday evening, soon after the Iranian embassy in New Delhi, citing local media in Iran, said that the 'missing Indian citizens have been freed by Tehran police'.
Husanpreet's cousin Manpreet Singh told the Indian Express that he received a call from an Iranian number at around 6 pm Tuesday.
'It was Husanpreet. He only said, 'We are safe now. Indian authorities have rescued us and we are now being taken to the embassy'. Before I could ask anything, the line went dead. Now, at least we know that he is alive,' said Manpreet.

As conditions of bail, the judge also asked Parmar to surrender his passport, local news reports said. Parmar was driving a commercial vehicle pulling a trailer on Dec. 22, 2024 when the vehicle went into the median at mile marker 431, rolled onto its side and entered the oncoming lane of traffic, KTVQ reported. The commercial vehicle then struck a Volkswagen passenger car and a Chevrolet Suburban. The driver of the Suburban, 56-year-old Kevin Wilkerson of Laurel, was killed. The device, which records when a commercial driver is off duty, was "manually manipulated," prosecutors alleged, and the investigators determined Parmar "did not take the required 10 hours of Off Duty or Sleeper Berth as required" during the trip. Parmar initially told investigators that wind had caused the accident. The investigation determined there was no evidence to support that wind caused the crash, and instead the crash was "consistent with that of a drowsy driver."

On the surface, it begins with a phone game — just a few clicks on an app promising quick winnings. But online gambling in Karnataka today sits at the crossroads of law, livelihood, and loss. On one side are stories of ordinary families falling into debt traps so deep that lives are lost to shame and desperation. On another is the state govt, caught between public pressure to regulate and court battles over the limits of prohibition. Police records show 32 suicides linked to online gambling losses since 2023, nearly two-thirds of them in Bengaluru. Officers admit the number is likely far higher, hidden in missing-person cases and unreported deaths. Victims come from every walk of life: drivers, small businessmen, students, even salaried workers. Each case has the same cycle — borrowed money, mounting losses, shame, and no way out. While families crumble and psychiatrists warn of rising addiction among the young, who increasingly equate online identity with self-worth, the gaming industry is booming, its revenues set to double. At the heart of the debate is a question: has online gambling quietly grown into a social crisis? Joshi Antony recorded a video accusing his sister Sharmila and her husband Jobi of taking a loan of Rs 80 lakh in their widowed sister's name and losing it in online games. Hours after Joshi's suicide, the couple also ended their lives. In Jan, two men in Bengaluru, Mallikarjun, a lab technician, and Kumaraswamy, an auto driver, killed themselves after losing more than Rs 10 lakh each on rummy apps. Both had taken hand loans. Unable to face creditors, they gave up. In Aug 2024, Srinivas, a travel agent from Hassan, jumped with his wife and 11-year-old daughter into Hemavati canal. He had borrowed over Rs 15 lakh, lost it on online rummy, and could not repay. These are part of 32 gambling-linked suicides since 2023, 20 of which are in the state capital. Govt awaiting panel report Home minister G Parameshwara told the Legislative Assembly that the state is awaiting the recommendations of a committee headed by IPS officer Pronab Mohanty, expected in Sept, before deciding on regulation. Karnataka had earlier amended the Police Act in 2021 to ban online games, but the high court struck it down in 2022, calling the move unconstitutional and arbitrary. The state has challenged the order in the Supreme Court. "Online games are more dangerous than drugs," Parameshwara said, stressing the need to protect the youth. At the same time, IT-BT minister Priyank Kharge flagged the industry's growth potential. He said India's gaming business, valued at Rs 3.7 lakh-crore, could double to Rs 7.4 lakh-crore within three years, with 590 million gamers and 140 million paid users already active in 2024. Industry Booming The India Gaming Report-2025 identifies Real Money Gaming (RMG) as the engine of growth, contributing 86% of industry revenue in 2024. Paying gamers grew at 18.5% annually between 2020 and 2024, and are expected to reach 292 million by 2029. RMG alone is projected to touch $7.3 billion by then. Of the $2.8 billion invested in Indian gaming firms since 2019, 90% has flowed into RMG. Analysts say the model has adapted swiftly to tax changes and is now entrenched as the backbone of the sector. HC drops contempt proceedings against officer after govt complies with order
Cuttack: Orissa high court on Tuesday dropped contempt proceedings against additional chief secretary (home), Satyabrata Sahu, for non-compliance of its directive issued on March 28, 2024 to provide a compensation of Rs 5 lakh in a 2015 custodial death case, after the state govt informed that it had complied with the order. Petitioner's counsel, Prabir Kumar Das, also informed the bench of Justice S K Panigrahi that the legal heirs of the deceased — Makhunu Bag of Dekulba village in Bargarh district — had received the compensation amount on Monday. The contempt petition was filed by Biju Bag, 28, younger son of Makhunu, in March, alleging that the state had failed to comply with the HC's compensation order. The court had earlier warned that Sahu must appear via virtual mode on Aug 19 if the amount was not paid by then. Makhunu had gone missing on July 17, 2015, after visiting Bheden police station to inquire about the whereabouts of his son. More than two months later, on Sept 24, his skeletal remains were recovered from Panichhapar jungle in Sonepur district. His identity was confirmed by both family members and through DNA test. Initially, Biju had sought a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for his father's alleged custodial death. In its March 2024 ruling, the HC directed the state to pay Rs 5 lakh to Makhunu's legal heirs. "Though the younger son of the deceased is the only claimant in this writ petition, in the interest of justice and to mitigate the hardship faced by the widow, two young sons, and his ageing mother, this court deems it fit to award compensation of Rs 5 lakh," the court ordered. State govt later sought clarification, contending that the victim's family had already received Rs 7.5 lakh as ex gratia, and the Rs 5 lakh should be considered inclusive. However, the HC, in a July 23, 2024 order, made it clear that the Rs 5 lakh was to be paid "over and above" the earlier amount.
