It's Take Two for Mauricio Pochettino in tournament knockout rounds for the United States men's national team when the Yanks face Costa Rica in a 2025 Gold Cup quarterfinal in Minneapolis on Sunday.
Pochettino led the Yanks to the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals before they bowed out earlier this year, and he's engineered a near-perfect group stage at the Gold Cup.

The USMNT have won all three of their matches, conceding a single goal to win Group D and set up a showdown with Costa Rica.
Los Ticos were hard-luck runners-up in Group A, beating Dominican Republic and Suriname but drawing Mexico to finish behind El Tri on a single goal in goal differential.
Led by former Mexico manager Miguel Herrera, Costa Rica should prove the toughest test of the tournament so far for the Yanks after Pochettino oversaw wins over Trinidad and Tobago, Saudi Arabia, and Haiti.

USMNT team news, focus
It's been a breakout tournament for Malik Tillman, and the USMNT's midfield is deep and strong even without several key names. Tyler Adams, Johnny Cardoso, and Luca de la Torre are among the players who will patrol the middle of the park. Tim Ream and Chris Richards have proven solid at the back, though Pochettino has to choose his man behind them. Matt Freese had been good but made a bad error on the lone concession of the tournament.
Costa Rica team news, focus
Los Ticos are a threat with 23-year-old Spartak Moscow star Manfred Ugalde leading the line, and he scored three goals in the group stage after leading the Russian top flight in goals this season. Young Rio Ave midfielder Brandon Aguilera has also been excellent on this stage, and Westerlo 20-year-old Josimer Alcocer has bagged a pair of goals. Questions were raised off three conceded goals to Suriname and another one to the Dominican Republic, but a nil-nil over 90 minutes against Mexico shows that Keylor Navas and his back line are no slouches.
USMNT vs Costa Rica prediction
The Yanks are due for a scare, and Costa Rica are their toughest foe since the friendly losses to Turkiye and Switzerland. Keylor Navas was solid in a 0-0 draw against Mexico, but Los Ticos back line is not what it's been in the past. Costa Rica's Manfred Ugalde is a player but the U.S. has the most dangerous playmaker in Malik Tillman. Herrera's tournament nous is a wild card here, but Pochettino has looked more and more comfortable with both his Best XI and this tournament. Should the USMNT be on upset alert? Only if they are not alert. The Yanks have shown entitlement in the past but seem to have been properly awakened by the chastening loss to Switzerland. Ultimately, the USMNT depth in midfield and relative strength at center back — speaking in CONCACAF terms — should be enough for a place in the semifinal round. USMNT 2-1 Costa Rica.

NYCFC to put quick-strike offense up against CF Montreal

New York City FC will hope to tally another positive result absent starting goalkeeper Matt Freese as they visit a struggling CF Montreal on Saturday night. NYCFC (8-6-4, 28 points) sit just a single spot outside of automatic playoff qualification. With Freese away at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, backup goalkeeper Tomas Romero made his club debut on June 12 against Atlanta United, recording his fifth career clean sheet in a 4-0 victory. In that game, Monsef Bakrar scored in the 55th minute and Hannes Wolf bagged a brace in the 57th and 59th in what was reportedly the speediest three-goal sequence in team history. "Monsef has showed already in a few games back how important it is to keep the belief in your part of the team process," NYCFC manager Pascal Jansen said after the match. At the very bottom of the Eastern Conference, CF Montreal (2-12-5, 11 points) are still searching for their first win on home turf of the 2025 campaign. A 90th-minute headed goal from their leading scorer Prince Owusu proved to be Montreal's only consolation in a 3-1 defeat to Cincinnati on Wednesday night. "For me, the moment you concede the first goal, it's not the same," assistant coach David Sauvry told reporters. "The energy level when you're pushing to come back and when you're trying to score and exploit some moments, it's not the same." One of their two wins this season, though, came against NYCFC on May 10, with Owusu potting the only goal in a low-key affair at Yankee Stadium. That result was Montreal's most recent clean sheet. Both teams will be missing a number of key players representing their national teams at the Gold Cup. For Montreal, backline stalwart Joel Waterman remains with Canada, as does young midfielder Nathan Saliba, who will be joining Belgian club Anderlecht after the tournament. Along with Freese, New York will also be missing Costa Rican forward Alonso Martinez. Montreal interim manager Marco Donadel will return behind the sidelines after missing the previous match with a suspension. It is unclear whether designated player Giacomo Vrioni will join him after missing the Cincinnati game with an elbow injury. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Padraig Harrington, Stewart Cink beat weather delay, tie for lead at 2025 U.S. Senior Open

The 45th U.S. Senior Open features a couple of familiar names tied atop the leaderboard as well as some familiar afternoon summer weather at the Broadmoor. Padraig Harrington, who opened his second round Friday with three birdies on his first four holes, went on to post a 3-under 67. Meanwhile, Stewart Cink shot 4-under 66. Those two are tied for the lead at 6 under overall in Colorado Springs, Colorado. For Harrington, it's his second straight 67. He was the 18-hole leader alongside Mark Hensby, but Hensby isn't scheduled to tee off for his second round till 1:43 p.m. local time (4:34 p.m. ET) on Friday. Harrington is the 2022 U.S. Senior Open champ. Cink is competing in this event for the first time. They were in the same threesome the first two days alongside Justin Leonard. Harrington even got a read from Cink on the par-5 ninth hole, where Harrington drained a long putt. "The one on 9, I got a lovely read off Stewart. I don't think I would have given it as much break, so that was nice," he said. "We're seeing that a lot lately, aren't we, people getting reads? That was advantageous. They're the breaks you get when things are going well." Soon after they finished, the U.S. Golf Association suspended play due to dangerous weather in the area. Fans were told to exit the grandstands and take shelter immediately. The horns just sounded, halting play in the second round of the U.S. Senior Open at The guess on how long the delay will last. Being in the early wave and beating the weather delay is a bonus, according to Harrington. "This is the advantage of having a late-early tee time. It gives you an extra, I probably got close to 24 hours before my next round, so it's time to rest and get your head in place because it's going to be a long weekend from now for sure," he said. "When you're at the top of the leaderboard all week, it's always a stressful week." The Broadmoor is hosting the Senior Open for a second time. Earlier in the week, the USGA awarded the venue two future Opens. A year ago, the Senior Open went to a Monday finish due to dangerous weather during the final round in Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island. Defending tournament champion Richard Bland is not in the field, as his commitment to LIV Golf has him in Dallas this week.

Full Nets schedule for 2025 NBA Summer League

The NBA announced the Nets' schedule for the 2025 Las Vegas Summer League:July 10, vs. Thunder, 5:30 PM ET, ESPN2July 13, vs. Wizards, 8:00 PM ET, ESPN2July 15, vs. Knicks, 6:00 PM ET, ESPN2July 16, vs. Magic, 7:30 PM ET, NBA TVNets face 1 Lottery pick (Tre Johnson). The Brooklyn Nets are coming off a 2025 NBA Draft in which they shocked many around the league by the way that they went about the first round. Brooklyn did not make the decisions that many expected them to heading into the Draft, but with five new rookies to incorporate into the roster, it is now known when Nets fans will get to see them play. The NBA announced on Friday the entire schedule for the upcoming 2025 Las Vegas Summer League that will be happening from July 10 to July 20 to give a glimpse at some of the young players of the future. The Nets will be playing four times: July 10 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, July 13 against the Washington Wizards, July 15 against the New York Knicks, and July 16 against the Orlando Magic. As of this writing, it hasn't been announced what Brooklyn's summer league roster will be, but it's safe to assume that the five first-round picks will be on the roster. There is also the possibility that Alabama forward Grant Nelson will be on the roster after HoopsHype's Michael Scotto reported on Thursday that Nelson will compete for one of the Two-Way spots in training camp. Over the course of their summer league schedule, the Nets will be facing some interesting players like Wizards guard Tre Johnson, the only 2025 Lottery pick that Brooklyn will be facing on the slate. The Nets' summer league team last season was coached by assistant Steve Hetzel so it will be interesting to see if he assumes the mantle this time around. The summer league is more important for the Nets than most teams given that they are still in the early stages of their rebuild and are hoping that some of the young players on the roster will show signs of stardom in Las Vegas, Nevada. For example, Brooklyn selected BYU guard Egor Demin with the eighth overall pick in the Draft so Vegas will be the first chance for everyone to see what he can do at the NBA level.
