A family has been left devastated after a much-loved grandmother was killed in a car crash —followed just three months later by the death of her grieving husband.
Pauline Williams, 79, died after suffering a catastrophic head injury in a crash near New Inn, Pontypool, on August 7, 2023. The tragic incident occurred when a Peugeot 3008, driven by 79-year-old Raymond Charles, collided with the rear of the Ford Fusion she was travelling in with her husband, Brian Williams, behind the wheel, reports WalesOnline.

The couple, described by their family as 'inseparable' and 'loving,' had been married since 1964 and were well known in their local community.

A court heard that Mr Williams had slowed his vehicle while approaching a roundabout on the A4042 when Charles, failing to brake in time, ploughed into the back of their car. Pauline, who was in the front passenger seat, was rushed to Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran but was sadly pronounced dead at 3.30pm.
Brian Williams suffered serious injuries including broken ribs, burns, and temporary mobility loss. He spent five weeks in hospital and never fully recovered. He passed away from natural causes three months later while undergoing surgery for kidney cancer.
At a hearing at Newport Crown Court on Friday, it was revealed that Charles, of The Woodlands, Talywain, told police he could not recall the crash and that the vehicle appeared in front of him suddenly. He later pleaded guilty to causing death and serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving.

In a moving victim impact statement read out in court, the couple's son Daniel Williams paid tribute to his mother, who had worked as a lab chemist before raising three children and becoming a devoted grandmother.
'She was always there for us,' he said. 'Mum had a witty sense of humour, and she loved spending time with her grandchildren, especially cooking and making a mess with them.'

He added: 'The way she died left us completely numb. I still have flashbacks of her receiving CPR at the side of the road. We never imagined she would go like that.'
Daughter Alison Rogers described the pair as 'a proper loving couple' and said her father was never the same after Pauline's death.

'Dad was a jolly, lively man, but he changed completely. Life was nothing without Mum. He tried to carry on but he wasn't strong enough. It's left a massive hole in all our lives.'
Despite their grief, the family expressed compassion for Charles, saying they held no grudge.
'We're sure not just him but his family too have suffered. We hope he can move on with his life and that no custody sentence is imposed. We've all suffered enough.'

Defending, barrister Nigel Fryer said Charles was deeply remorseful and lives with the consequences every day. He described him as a 'decent man' who has supported his community and cares for his wife of 54 years despite his own health issues.
Judge Carl Harrison described the incident as a tragedy. 'Mrs Williams was a much-loved wife, mother and grandmother who sadly lost her life. Mr Williams suffered serious injuries and had to endure both physical trauma and the loss of his wife in the final months of his life.'
Sentencing will be considered at a later date.

Unexpected Emmerdale character confesses to murder in ITVX streaming release

The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn't aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX. Ruby Miligan (Beth Cordingly) has confessed to murdering her father Anthony in Emmerdale, believing the body in the lake belongs to him. Last Friday, Kyle (Huey Quinn) arrived outside the pub to tell Ruby, Caleb Miligan (William Ash), Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) and Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) that he had just seen divers pulling a body out of the lake, the same one the limo crash happened on. The group immediately assumed the body was that of Anthony Fox's, and that it wouldn't be long until their secret covering up his death was discovered. Cain, Chas, Caleb and Ruby spent the majority of tonight's episode trying to work out how the aftermath would unfold. They were all in agreement that once forensics complete their tests on Anthony's body, they would find DNA that belongs to one of the six people who kept his murder hidden from everyone. The conclusion was for Caleb and Ruby to go on the run, but something about this made Ruby feel uneasy. She didn't want Caleb throwing his life away in the village for her, but he was adamant that he did not have a life if Ruby wasn't in it. With the decision reached, Cain and Chas said their goodbyes as Ruby and Caleb prepared to go on the run for the rest of their lives. Just as Caleb disappeared though, it became apparent that Ruby absolutely wasn't going to go through with this idea. She disappeared out of the door and then made her way to the police station. Colorado terror attack victims left with 'life-threatening' injuries

The terrifying incident targeted an organised demonstration at a shopping centre. Several people have been left with burn injuries, some potentially life-threatening, after a suspect launched Molotov cocktails at a pro-Israel demonstration on Sunday afternoon. The shocking incident in Boulder, Colorado on June 1 resulted in injuries ranging from "very serious to more minor", according to Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn. At least one person is confirmed to have been critically injured. ‌ Eyewitnesses at the city's Pearl Street Mall recalled a topless male suspect throwing incendiary devices at the crowd of peaceful demonstrators pleading for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza. ‌ Footage shared on social media shows the man screaming at the gathered people. He has reportedly since been arrested without incident following treatment for minor injuries, reports the Irish Star. The incident has been branded as an act of terrorism by the FBI, with local police advising their investigation is still being carried out. Chief Officer Redfearn added it is "too early to speculate motive". ‌ Colorado Governor Jared Polis said in a statement he was "closely monitoring" the situation after criticising the "hate-filled act", which he described as "unacceptable". According to CNN, Donald Trump has already been briefed about the incident. The state's Attorney General, Phil Weiser, a descendant of Holocaust survivors, said the attack seems to be "a hate crime given the group that was targeted." The demonstration had been organised by Run For Their Lives, a global initiative set up following the start of the war on October 7, 2023, to demand the immediate release of Israeli hostages in Gaza. ‌ Several sub-groups have been set up by Jewish communities across the US ever since, including in Boulder. The city's Jewish community released a joint statement on the incident. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "Our hearts go out to those who witnessed this horrible attack, and prayers for a speedy recovery to those who were injured." "When events like this enter our own community, we are shaken.
