Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin and leaders pay tribute on Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar's 1,350th birth anniversary
TIRUCHY: Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Friday evening paid floral tributes to Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar on the occasion of his 1,350th birth anniversary at Othakadai.
The day saw visits by political leaders from across the spectrum, each making their own pitch to the influential Mutharaiyar community in central Tamil Nadu. The emperor is hailed by the Mutharaiyars, who are listed under the Most Backward Classes, as their cultural icon.
Earlier in the day, ministers K.N. Nehru, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Siva V. Meyyanathan, and MLAs Stalin Kumar, M. Palaniyandi, and S. Kathiravan also garlanded Mutharaiyar's statue. Talking to reporters, Poyyamozhi said, 'Mutharaiyar is not a leader of a single community but an icon for all Tamils.'

Reacting to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's comments on Sunday that the NDA will come to power in Tamil Nadu in 2026, the DMK organisation secretary, R.S. According to Mr. Bharathi, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has entered every home through the welfare schemes of the Tamil Nadu government. 'This is not the first time that Mr Shah has said that BJP-AIADMK alliance will win. He said the same thing during 2021 Assembly elections. He said the BJP will win more seats in 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Nothing happened. NDA has only faced defeats in Tamil Nadu,' the DMK leader said.

MDMK leader Vaiko backs Haasan's view on Kannada origin
COIMBATORE: MDMK leader and Rajya Sabha member Vaiko on Thursday backed actor-politician Kamal Haasan's remarks that the Kannada language was born out of Tamil. Addressing the media, Vaiko said that Tamil is one of the oldest languages like Latin or Greek. "Not only Robert Caldwell (renowned 19th-century missionary and linguist), but other linguistic experts across the globe have acknowledged that Tamil is the oldest language in the world," the veteran politician said. "We are not lauding the Tamil language as we are from Tamil Nadu. There is nothing wrong in Kamal Hassan's statement since he stated the truth that Kannada was born out of Tamil," said Vaiko who demanded the fringe parties in Karnataka to stop protesting against Kamal and Tamils in Karnataka. Vaiko blamed the lack of timely police intelligence for the tragic Bengaluru stampede on Wednesday. "The police intelligence wing could have gathered a report about the visitors and taken prior steps to prevent it," he noted.

TN Govt Collects 300 MT Waste from Govt Offices in Special Drive
Status: cleared Chennai: Tamil Nadu govt on Thursday collected over 300 metric tonnes of waste from 1,100 govt offices across the state, including the state secretariat. The initiative, launched under the "Thooimai Iyakkam" (Cleanliness Movement), coincided with World Environment Day on June 5 and marks the beginning of a larger, phased campaign. "We have created a war room in GCC's headquarters to monitor the activities," he said, adding that the drive will also expand to colleges, hospitals, and schools in the next ten days. The drive was spearheaded by the newly established Clean Tamil Nadu Company Limited (CTCL), which aims to streamline the collection, recycling, and reuse of waste across state departments. Offices of district collectors, corporations, municipalities, panchayat unions, and various other departments participated in the effort, handing over pre-segregated waste including plastics, e-waste, metals, paper, glass, and unusable furniture. Udhayanidhi said the initiative must be a long-term one, seeking support from members of the public. Officials said all collected waste will be processed in the composting centres and will either be recycled or reused. The special projects department has also released guidelines to all govt offices to carry out cleaning drives every week and segregate the waste. Udhayanidhi said measures to improve the initiative, including funding, will be discussed.
