Gurgaon school murder: Full-day hearings to expedite trial
The decision comes after more than two years of proceedings, during which only 21 of 123 witnesses listed by the CBI have had their statements recorded. By dedicating full days to the trial, the court aims to facilitate a swifter process, allowing for more witness testimonies during every hearing.
The case involves a former Class XI student — now 23 — who was apprehended by the CBI in Nov 2017 for the alleged murder of a Class 2 boy inside the school toilet. The accused, who was 16 at the time of the crime but is now being tried as an adult, was granted bail by the Supreme Court in Oct 2022. A separate trial is underway against five police officials at a CBI court in Panchkula for the botched up initial probe in which the cops had taken a school bus driver into custody

Initially handled by additional chief judicial magistrate Amit Gautam, the case has now been transferred to the court of additional sessions judge Puneet Agarwal.
The next hearing is scheduled for Sept 12, when the court will sit for the entire day from 9am to 4.30pm. The court is aiming to complete recording the testimonies of at least four witnesses during every session.
Sushil Tekriwal, who represented the victim's father in court, said the court had instructed the CBI to present the maximum number of witnesses possible at every hearing.
"The court's directive is a response to the slow pace of the trial, which saw only 12 witness statements being recorded in the first six months and nine more over the following year and a half.

The Supreme Court has also emphasised the need for a speedy trial. So, the trial court has sought to increase the frequency of hearings by seeking dates at short intervals or increasing the number of witnesses per hearing," he added.
Trial in the case started on Jan 24, 2023, when charges under Section 302 of the IPC (murder) were framed against the accused. Since Feb 20, 2023, the CBI has been presenting two witnesses per hearing — sometimes even one — though time constraints and other issues have limited the number of testimonies completed.
It was on Sept 8, 2017, that the Class 2 student was allegedly murdered by the senior student on the school campus. The accused was then 16 years and five months old.

Rajasthan: CBI rescues minor girl kidnapped from West Bengal two years ago
New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI) The CBI has rescued a minor girl from Pali, Rajasthan, who was allegedly kidnapped from West Bengal's Bardhaman two years ago, and was 'sold' twice on the pretext of marriage, officials said Saturday. The CBI has arrested five accused in the case and it suspects that the alleged kidnapping was part of a bigger human trafficking network, they said. The girl, who was kidnapped on August 9, 2023 after leaving home for a tuition class, was found to be living at the residence of one of the accused in Pali. The central probe agency was roped in by the Calcutta High Court through a order on February 16, 2024 on a plea of the victim's mother. The case was initially investigated by the West Bengal CID and was handed over to the CBI amid concerns over the girl's safety and the suspected nature of her disappearance. The CBI developed intelligence through its sources and call data record (CDR) analysis which pointed sleuths towards Rajasthan. A CBI team raided the premises in Pali on August 7, where the girl was living, they said. 'The investigation has revealed that the missing girl was a minor when she went missing and was shown as a major in the affidavits created for her marriage. She was sold twice for marriage. It is suspected that this incident could be part of a big human trafficking network," a CBI spokesperson said in a statement. The CBI arrested five accused, who were produced before a special court in Pali on Friday, which sent them on transit remand for three days to be produced before district and sessions judge at Purba Bardhaman (West Bengal), the statement said. Woman SI held for colleague's suicide
Gaya: A woman sub-inspector in Gaya, Sweeti Kumari, was arrested on Saturday for alleged blackmail that police say drove fellow officer and batchmate Anuj Kashyap to take his own life. Kashyap, posted in the SSP's office as media in-charge, was found hanging at his private residence in Mohan Nagar under Rampur police station on Friday. Both officers joined the Bihar Police in 2019 and were posted in Gaya district. City SP Ramanand Kumar Kaushal, who heads the special investigation team formed to probe the case, said, "A case under relevant sections of the BNS for blackmail and abetment of suicide has been registered against her on the basis of a written complaint from the deceased officer's father, Bhawnath Mishra." In his complaint, Mishra alleged that Sweeti repeatedly blackmailed and pressured his son to marry her, despite knowing he was already married. Kashyap's wife, who is pregnant, is preparing for the UPSC examination in Delhi. The two became close in 2019 while serving at Imamganj police station. Though later posted separately — Sweeti in Belaganj, about 15km from headquarters — they remained in frequent contact. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Can Mental Illness be the Key to Their Creativity? Undo Mishra also alleged that Sweeti was the first to arrive at the spot and removed documents from Kashyap's room before police arrived. The incident comes months after constable Vibha Kumari died by suicide in Gaya. Commenting on such cases, retired IPS officer M A Kazmi said recent large-scale recruitment of women had changed the police force's composition, but training modules had not been updated to address gender sensitivity and relationship management. State Bar Council issues notices to 16 lawyers over ‘bench hunting'
Chandigarh: The Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana (BCPH) has issued notices to 16 lawyers, including two senior advocates, in connection with allegations of "bench hunting" in a high-profile case involving real estate developer Roop Bansal. The council issued the notice following a suo motu inquiry initiated by the privilege committee after media reports and court observations hinted at attempts to manipulate the bench allocation process of the Punjab and Haryana high court. The privilege committee, chaired by Raj Kumar Chauhan, convened on Aug 7 to examine records in CRM-M-19843-2025 (Roop Bansal vs State of Haryana), along with related high court orders and news reports. The committee observed that the allegations, if proven, amount to a grave attack on the dignity and ethics of the legal profession. "Any attempt to subvert the Temple of Justice, motivated by greed or manipulation, must be addressed with utmost seriousness," the order stated, invoking historical and moral analogies from the Mahabharata and quotes from figures like Mahatma Gandhi, B R Ambedkar, Lord Denning, and Justice Brandeis. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? Access all TV channels without a subscription! Techno Mag Learn More Undo The order was released late on Friday evening. The lawyers who have been asked to file a response to the issue are J K Singla, Sidharth Bhardwaj, Aditya Aggarwal, Gagandeep Singh, Anmol Chandan, Baljeet Beniwal, Harsh Sharma, Sauhard Singh, Rupender Singh, Ankit Yadav, Ashim Singla, Aakash Sharma, Bindu, APS Shergil, senior advocate Rakesh Nehra, and senior advocate Puneet Bali. All are alleged to have appeared or acted on behalf of Roop Bansal in the matter. The committee noted that records prima facie suggest advocate J K Singla may have played a "key role" in orchestrating the strategy, but stressed that such actions were likely carried out "in an organised manner" with involvement from other "ingenious minds" yet to be identified. The order also called for responses from prominent senior advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Mukul Rohatgi to ensure a comprehensive adjudication. The lawyers have been asked to appear before the privilege committee on Aug 16 at 3 pm, either in person or through counsel, and to submit written replies. The committee likened the alleged practice of bench hunting, seeking a particular bench perceived to be favourable, to "rotten apples in the basket" and stressed the need to remove them before the entire profession's integrity is compromised. It also appealed for information or complaints from advocates or affected persons, to be sent via the committee's email or official WhatsApp number. "The legal profession is not merely a career — it is a calling that demands unshakable integrity, moral courage, and devotion to the cause of justice," the order concluded, warning that ethical breaches by even a few can corrode public faith in the entire system. Importantly, the matter came into the limelight after a complaint was received by Chief Justice Sheel Nagu of the Punjab and Haryana high court, and the matter was de-listed from the bench of Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu, who reserved its verdict after hearing the matter. The Chief Justice, in its order, hinted at bench hunting by the lawyers in this matter. Prior to referring the matter to Justice Sindhu, several benches recused themselves from hearing. Interestingly, even after taking the matter from Justice Sidhu, several other judges of the HC recused themselves from hearing this case.
