Man who filmed himself setting fire to Bible on social media found shot dead
Police have launched an investigation after Antônio Rocha de Sousa was fatally shot just 10 days after he shared a video of himself using a lighter to burn a copy of the Bible onto social media
A man who filmed himself setting fire to a Bible before uploading it to social media has been found shot dead. Antônio Rocha de Sousa was found dead on Wednesday, May 14, having suffered several gunshot wounds to his body.
Police are treating his death as murder. 10 days before being killed, Antônio shared a video of himself setting fire to a Bible on social media. in the clip, the 47-year-old used a lighter to burn the religious text, as reported by Need to Know. Speaking to the camera, he said: "This here is a Bible, which they say is sacred. Look what it does when faced with fire. It burns.
"To me, God doesn't exist. This is just a way to enslave and manipulate people. If you haven't woken up yet, it's time to wake up. Look what this 'sacred' thing does in the face of fire. It's time to wake up - God doesn't exist."
The authorities say Antônio was shot on a street in a rural part of Tianguá, west of Fortaleza, Brazil. But other reports say locals found his body in his home, where he lived alone, and called the police straight away.
Local police are investigating but still have no concrete leads regarding the perpetrators or the motive. A police spokesperson told local media: 'We are looking into all possibilities.
'We're not ruling out any lines of investigation, whether related to the video or to the other crimes he was involved in.' The authorities say Antônio has previous convictions for intentional bodily harm.
And they believe the Bible he set fire to was stolen. The police opened a case of theft, damage, and desecration of a religious object on 10 May.
In a statement, the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) reported that the victim had a criminal record for intentional bodily harm.
Teams from the Military Police (PMCE) and Forensic Expertise (Pefoce) were at the scene and carried out the initial investigations.
The last time Antônio was active on social media was the day before. He regularly posted videos of himself sharing his thoughts for his followers.
His bizarre bio said: 'Follower of Christ, (peacekeeper of Peace). Born again in (Christ), among the living, who were once dead…after having been tested, tried, and approved by God.'
The case echoes that of Salwan Momika, who was shot dead in his flat in Södertälje, south-west of Stockholm, in January. The 38-year-old Iraqi had arrived in Sweden as a refugee in 2018 and repeatedly burnt Qurans in 2023.

Alabama to execute a long-serving death row inmate for the 1988 beating death of a woman he dated
ATMORE, Ala. — A man convicted of beating a woman to death nearly 37 years ago is scheduled to be executed Tuesday in Alabama in what will be the nation's sixth execution with nitrogen gas. Gregory Hunt is scheduled to be put to death Tuesday night at a south Alabama prison. Hunt was convicted of killing Karen Lane, a woman he had been dating for about a month, according to court records. The Alabama execution is one of four that had been scheduled this week in the United States. Executions are also scheduled in Florida and South Carolina. A judge in Oklahoma on Monday issued a temporary stay for an execution in that state, but the state attorney general is seeking to get it lifted. Lane was 32 when she was murdered Aug. 2, 1988, in the Cordova apartment she shared with a woman who was Hunt's cousin. Prosecutors said Hunt broke into her apartment and killed her after sexually abusing her. A physician who performed an autopsy testified that she died from blunt force trauma and that Lane had sustained some 60 injuries, including 20 to the head. A jury on June 19, 1990, found Hunt guilty of capital murder during sexual abuse and burglary. Jurors recommended by a vote of 11-1 that he receive a death sentence, which a judge imposed. Hunt's final request for a stay of execution, which he filed himself, focused on claims that prosecutors made false statements to jurors about evidence of sexual abuse. The element of sexual abuse is what elevated the crime to a death penalty offense. In a filing to the U.S. Supreme Court, Hunt, acting as his own attorney, wrote that a prosecutor told jurors that cervical mucus was on a broomstick near Hunt's body. However, the victim did not have a cervix because of an earlier hysterectomy. The Alabama attorney general's office called the claim meritless and said even if the prosecutor erred in that statement, it did not throw the conviction into doubt. Hunt, speaking by telephone last month from prison, did not dispute killing Lane but maintained he did not sexually assault her. He also described himself as someone who was changed by prison. 'Karen didn't deserve what happened to her,' Hunt said. Hunt said he had been drinking and doing drugs on the night of the crime and became jealous when he saw Lane in a car with another man. 'You have your come-to-Jesus moment. Of course, after the fact, you can't believe what has happened. You can't believe you were part of it and did it,' Hunt said. Hunt, who was born in 1960 and came to death row in 1990, is now among the longest-serving inmates on Alabama's death row. He said prison became his 'hospital' to heal his broken mind. He said since 1988, he has been leading a Bible class attended by two dozen or more inmates. 'Just trying to be a light in a dark place, trying to tell people if I can change, they can too. ... become people of love instead of hate,' he said. Lane's sister declined to comment when reached by telephone. The family is expected to give a written statement Tuesday night. 'The way she was killed is just devastating,' Denise Gurganus, Lane's sister, told TV station WBRC at a 2014 vigil for crime victims. 'It's hard enough to lose a family member to death, but when it's this gruesome.' The Alabama attorney general's office, in asking justices to reject Hunt's request for a stay of execution, wrote that Hunt has now been on death row longer than Lane was alive. Alabama last year became the first state to carry out an execution with nitrogen gas. Nitrogen has now been used in five executions — four in Alabama and one in Louisiana. The method involves using a gas mask to force an inmate to breathe pure nitrogen gas, depriving them of the oxygen needed to stay alive. Hunt had named nitrogen as his preferred execution method. He made the selection before Alabama had developed procedures for using gas. Alabama also allows inmates to choose lethal injection or the electric chair.

East 17 icon feels 'absolutely amazing' as he's baptised by The Krays' henchman
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The prospect of being held underwater by one of The Krays' henchmen is not one most people would jump at — unless you're East 17's Terry Coldwell. Terry, 50, gladly put himself in Chris Lambrianou's arms to be baptised at the River Church in London's East End. Seven born-again Christians stepped into the water with the 83-year-old former gangster, who spent part of his life as a member of 'The Firm'. The Firm was the nickname given to Ronnie and Reggie Kray's gang, based in Bethnal Green, London, throughout the 50s and 60s. A video shared by the Daily Mail showed Terry, speaking with Chris and the church's pastor, Dave Gill, as he stood in waist-high water for the ceremony. 'I've just been baptised and I feel absolutely amazing,' the Stay Another Day hitmaker told the Daily Mail. 'The service has been phenomenal today.' Terry added: 'I just feel great. I feel it was a long time coming and I'm really glad I did it.' A baptism is usually performed by a priest or bishop, but there are no restrictions on this in the Bible. East 17 rose to fame in the 90s, consisting of Terry, Tony Mortimer, Brian Harvey and John Hendy, with over 18million albums worldwide. The lineup has changed over the years, with Terry remaining constant, although he recently shared that he doubted a reunion was likely. Meanwhile, Chris had a very different career and would probably rather have avoided the spotlight entirely. He was involved in the dumping of Jack 'The Hat' McVitie's body after he was stabbed by Reggie in 1967. During his prison sentence after being arrested for armed robbery, Chris found God and moved away from his life of crime. Of the baptism, he shared: ''Baptising so many people gives me a spiritual high. It's like you cannot buy the feeling I have. More Trending 'That can only come from Jesus Christ. Trust in him and he will never fail you.' He also set up a charity with a former Metropolitan police detective, Jon Wedger, to help provide work for young people and keep them from turning to crime. Jon attended the Sunday service along with some close friends and said: 'I found the service to be very moving. I've know Terry for a few years and his faith has got stronger and stronger and I think it's been niggling away at him to get baptised for a while now. 'Myself and Chris have worked together for a while now. He is a man who has turned his back on crime and devoted himself to God and is making a difference now in people's lives and helping youngsters avoid making the same mistakes he did.' Got a story? Teenager jailed in Dubai for family holiday romance appeals to Sheikh for pardon
A British teenager has asked Dubai's ruler for a pardon after he was jailedover a holiday romance. Marcus Fakana, from Tottenham, north London has formally submitted a plea for clemency to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The now 19-year-old was sentenced to one year in prison in UAE last year following a short romantic relationship in which he had sex with a 17-year-old British girl. Both his family and the girl's family were on holiday in the middle eastern country at the time. The relationship between them was consensual but it's illegal to have sex with anyone under 18 in Dubai. Marcus, who has spent several months in Al Awir Prison, hopes the Sheikh will offer a humanitarian pardon, so he can return home before his sentence is due to end, reports NeedToKnow. 'This has been the most traumatic and life-altering experience imaginable for Marcus,' said Radha Stirling, founder of Detained in Dubai, which is supporting the teen's family. 'He is barely an adult himself and never intended to break any law. 'What happened was legal in the UK and consensual. 'But now he is facing permanent damage to his mental health and future prospects because of it.' Conditions at the prison are said to be taking a toll on Marcus, who is thought to have limited contact with his family. The mother of the girl he had a relationship with reported him to Dubai police after she and her family had returned to the UK and she saw pictures of the pair and chats between them. The then 18-year-old and his family were still in Dubai at the time and police arrested him at their hotel. His parents have made repeated appeals to David Lammy MP, and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. They have also asked the British Embassy in Dubai to help secure his release. Ms Stirling said: 'If Marcus could go back in time, he would. 'He has shown remorse and fully respects the laws of the UAE. 'He only hopes the government will show compassion and allow him to return home to rebuild his life. 'He's very young and this is a heartbreaking way to begin adulthood.' The family is urging the British public and authorities to back their plea for clemency. Ms Stirling warned other parents to be aware of the risks young Britons face in countries with very different legal systems. She said: 'Parents need to be aware that teens can be charged in the UAE for behaviour that would not be considered criminal at home. More Trending 'Whether that's a relationship, social media activity, or even drinking alcohol. 'Marcus is struggling, and this experience will leave a permanent scar. 'We implore Sheikh Mohammed and the government of Dubai to hear his pleas and let him come home.' Pardons are expected to be finalised this month.
