Man drowns at beauty spot moments after posing for photo after day of swimming
A 32-year-old man has tragically died at a beauty spot on the Houlong River, in Taiwan, after he jumped into the water and his body was found the following day
A man has drowned after jumping into a river at a beauty spot just moments after he was seen posiing for photos, smiling and waving at others in the group.
The 32-year-old, whose surname has been revealed by authorities as Nguyen, was part of a small group of people enjoying a day of barbecue and swimming by a river dam when the tragedy unfolded. According to witnesses, the man was smiling and waving for photos before he leapt from the top of a concrete block into the water. But as soon as he jumped in, he immediately disappeared below the surface of the river.
Just moments before, he was seen smiling and posing for photos at the Houlong River, located in Miaoli County, a county in western Taiwan. It is believed a strong current in the water pulled the man under and he was swept away.
A day later authorities said that his body was found between concrete blocks at the dam, where he may have been dragged by the swirling water.
The powerful flow of the creek made it nearly impossible for his friends to help when he disappeared on Sunday evening. Emergency services were quickly alerted and rushed to the scene at around 6pm, as reported by NeedToKnow.
Police, fire department teams and members of the Miaoli County Mountain Rescue Association arrived to help but divers were not able to locate the man in the dangerous conditions on Sunday.
Cheng Sheng-feng, head of the fire service's disaster relief unit, said that they received a report at 6pm on Sunday that a 32-year-old Vietnamese migrant worker had entered the water and disappeared at a dam on the Houlong River near the border of Miaoli City and Gongguan Township.
The man was in a group of five Vietnamese nationals who were friends and enjoying the warm weather. The Miaoli County Fire Bureau said that swimming and playing in the water are prohibited along the Houlong River.
It warned people that even when the river looks calm without wind and rain, there can quickly be flooding from heavy rainfall upstream which creates hidden currents and turbulent water.
A four-hour-long search ensued and rescue teams were eventually forced to pause the operation at around 10pm. They resumed the search at 7am on Monday (9 June), using equipment such as aerial drones to locate his body which was found 12.20pm.
Authorities have not released more details about man's identity however it has been established that he was a Vietnamese migrant worker. Police have also urged the public to exercise caution when visiting rivers or streams, especially in areas not designated for swimming.

Two killers chased stranger into Tube station and stabbed him with zombie knife
Two young men who chased a stranger into a Tube station and stabbed him to death with a zombie knife in front of horrified commuters are facing a life sentence. Milumo Pedrinho and Kevin Nguyen, both 21, have been convicted of murdering 33-year-old Ervin Baraku, who died after being attacked at Seven Sisters Underground station in north London, on the morning of July 23 last year. Jurors were shown footage of the pair following their victim down the steps before Pedrinho pulled out a foot-long blade with a serrated edge and plunged it into Mr Baraku's chest. Pedrinho previously pleaded guilty to murder and Nguyen was found guilty of the same charge following a two-week trial at Inner London Crown Court. He had denied murder and manslaughter. Michael Williams, prosecuting, told jurors during Nguyen's trial: 'On July 23 last year, the defendant encountered Ervin Baraku on the pavement on Seven Sisters Road. 'Mr Baraku left, repeatedly looking back over his shoulder. The defendant immediately went to the home address of Mr Pedrinho, depositing his puppy and setting off again with Mr Pedrinho armed with a zombie knife. 'Within 12 minutes, Ervin Baraku would be chased into the Underground by these two men and stabbed to the chest with the knife.' Mr Williams told jurors the murder was not 'committed by Mr Pedrinho in isolation' but was carried out 'with the support and encouragement' of Nguyen. The court heard Nguyen spotted Mr Baraku while out walking with a short while before the stabbing. After crossing the road and approaching him, the pair spent around 19 seconds speaking before going their separate ways. Mr Williams said only two people know what was said between them – Mr Baraku, who was dead within minutes of the conversation, and Nguyen, who gave no comment to police and declined to give evidence in his defence. 'We simply do not know what the motive is, or the reason Mr Baraku was murdered,' he said. But he added: 'We say you can safely infer that that interaction with the defendant was intrinsic to Mr Baraku's murder some 10 minutes later.' Nguyen went straight to Pedrinho's home nearby, with the pair quickly setting off again 'intent on violence'. 'We know that Mr Pedrinho had a large knife, and we know that the defendant is no stranger to possessing dangerous weapons himself,' Mr Williams added. Jurors heard Nguyen has two previous convictions for having a knife, in relation to a machete when he was 16 and a Rambo-style knife three years later. Mr Williams said of Nguyen: 'This is an individual accustomed to possessing knives in public, and there would undoubtedly have been a discussion about the weapon to be taken and who would have it.' Further CCTV footage shows the pair walking through the streets with their hoods up. Jurors were told Pedrinho's right hand stays in his pocket where the knife is hidden, 'ready to go at a moment's notice'. The stabbing itself was caught on CCTV footage from inside the station. It shows Mr Baraku falling to the ground where he looks up at Pedrinho chasing behind him with his arms outspread. The court heard witnesses screamed as he pulled out the zombie knife and stabbed Mr Baraku in the chest. Nguyen followed them down the stairs seconds after the fatal blow was struck and quickly fled with the knifeman. His barrister Naeem Mian KC told jurors the prosecution was 'overreaching', adding there was 'no evidence' he knew his friend was carrying a knife. He said the two previous convictions for carrying blades makes him stupid, but not a murderer. However, Mr Williams said: 'He knew what was going to happen, what was intended, and this was part of the plan.' More Trending Detective Superintendent Sam Blackburn said: 'This was an absolutely senseless and tragic attack that resulted in a man losing his life. 'There is absolutely no place for violence on the railway network, so I am glad to see both Nguyen and Pedrinho will be put behind bars for their part in this brutal murder. 'While no prison sentence can ever make up for the loss of a loved one, I hope justice being served can bring Ervin's family some peace after this horrific ordeal.' Drugs mule caught with cannabis worth £100k on A90 Perth to Dundee road
A drugs mule is facing jail after he was caught on the A90 transporting nearly £100,000 worth of cannabis into Tayside. Police intercepted Thuan Nguyen's black BMW between Perth and Dundee. Inside, they recovered 10 kilos of herbal substances, separated into multiple vacuum-packed bags. Vietnamese national Nguyen initially denied his role in the local drugs trade but he changed his plea to guilty on the second day of his trial at Perth Sheriff Court. The 35-year-old, who has been remanded in custody for more than a year, will be sentenced next month. Fiscal depute Lee-Anne Barclay, prosecuting, said police received intelligence a black BMW was being used to traffic drugs between Glasgow and Dundee. The vehicle was spotted just before 9pm on May 30 last year, travelling northbound on the A90 and officers signalled for the car to pull over. 'The accused, who was driving, was the only occupant of the vehicle,' Ms Barclay said. 'He told police that he did not understand or have good English. 'At this time, officers detected a strong smell of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle.' Nguyen was detained and taken to Dundee HQ. HIs car was also seized and searched. The court heard several vacuum-sealed packages of herbal substances were discovered. They tested positive for cannabis which, if sold in 1g deals, would have a street value of £99,8000. Police also recovered a piece of paper with handwritten names and numbers. It appeared to be a 'tick list' detailing amounts sold or owed to individual clients. Nguyen later claimed he was the victim of human trafficking but this was not supported by the Home Office after an investigation. First offender Nguyen, listed as a prisoner at HMP Perth, pled guilty to being concerned in the supply of cannabis on the A90 near Inchmichael on May 30 last year. Sheriff Jennifer Bain KC deferred sentence for background reports. Speaking after Nguyen's arrest, Detective Superintendent Steven Elliott said: 'This has been an excellent recovery which included officers from the roads policing team. 'Preventing the sale and supply of controlled drugs is a key focus and we rely on information from the public to help us continue disrupt such crimes. 'This operation underlines our commitment to the Serious Organised Crime Taskforce and the country's Serious Organised Crime Strategy. 'Police Scotland is committed to using every tool and tactic at our disposal to prevent the sale and distribution of illegal drugs in our local communities.'
