Safety of tourists in Sabah a top priority, says Liew
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is firmly committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety for tourists, says Datuk Seri Christina Liew.
The state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister said that several recent safety related incidents underscored the need for stronger safety protocols, strict compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and enhanced training for guides and boat operators.
She was referring to safety incidents such as scuba diving, snorkelling, and stand-up paddleboarding in marine and island areas.
Liew said that the Sabah government has taken decisive action.
"For instance, we have strengthened collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), and the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) to boost patrols and monitoring," said Liew.
Multilingual safety signage has also been installed at the arrival hall of the Tawau and Sandakan airports, she added.
Liew gave these assurances in her welcoming speech at the Tourism Coordination Meeting on Tourism with Federal and state agencies chaired by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing here Tuesday (Aug 12).
She said Sabah's tourism progress was very much aligned with that of the Federal Government.
"For us, ensuring a safe tourism environment is not just about protecting lives and prioritising well-being, but it is also about safeguarding Malaysia's reputation as a world-class travel destination.
"In this age of social media, even news of an isolated safety incident can spread rapidly and adversely impact our tourism image. That is why we must always remain vigilant," Liew added.

Niosh calls for enhanced water transport safety ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) has called for enhanced safety measures in water transport and related activities, particularly in the tourism sector, in line with Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM 2026). In a statement today, it said tourism boat operators and handlers must comply with laws and safety standards. This includes technical requirements under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 and tourism safety guidelines issued by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. "Various incidents involving water transport, including the capsizing tragedy in Pulau Perhentian that claimed lives and injured several victims on June 28, should serve as a reminder to all parties of the importance of adhering to safety procedures for the wellbeing of passengers, workers and tourism operators," the statement said. To this end, the agency expressed its readiness to assist relevant parties in complying with related laws and regulations through safety training, compliance audits and the strengthening of risk management systems. It said the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act 2022, enforced since June 1 last year, requires employers with five or more workers to appoint an occupational safety and health (OSH) coordinator. These coordinators are responsible for assisting employers in complying with OSH legislation and implementing OSH programmes in the workplace. "In this regard, Niosh also offers the OSH Coordinator course and various other programmes to help operators meet legal requirements, such as basic OSH and first aid training, which also includes water rescue skills. "In addition, Niosh offers an internationally recognised management system known as the 'Adventure Tourism Safety Management Systems' or MS ISO 21101:2022. "This system is designed to help operators identify risks, plan safety controls, and provide requirements for participants in activities they organise," the statement said. The agency said that through the implementation of this safety management system, safety audits and evaluations should be conducted regularly to ensure that the operations of the parties involved comply with standards and regulations and have valid licences. Niosh also recommended safety orientation sessions for tourists before activities are conducted, including proper use of life jackets and emergency procedures, to ensure water-based activities operate at the highest level of safety.

Sarawak eyes 5 mln tourists this year as WAK Festival kicks off

Speaking at the launch of the What About Kuching (WAK) Festival 2025 calendar at the Kuching Old Court House today, Abdul Karim said the state remains on track to meet its goal, though high airfare prices continue to pose a challenge. 'We've seen economy class fares hit RM800, and even more than RM1,000 at times. Prices are always driven by demand and supply. 'I'm looking forward to our new state airline, which could help stabilise rates. 'Apart from that, I do hope also that the airlines that are servicing now, whether it's MAS (Malaysia Airlines), whether it's AirAsia, whether it's Batik Air, they have to be considered and make sure that everything is in order,' he said. Abdul Karim stressed that flagship events like WAK play a crucial role in attracting visitors while showcasing Sarawak's rich arts, culture, and creative industries. This year's WAK, themed 'Roots', interpreted as 'We Are Kindred', will feature 49 partners, 67 events, and 369 programmes across 44 venues in and around Kuching, covering music, theatre, visual arts, crafts, gastronomy, and community activities. He noted that the festival's momentum had already begun building through its June satellite editions in Sibu and Miri, which drew strong crowds and highlighted WAK's role in uniting communities. Looking ahead, Abdul Karim said the International Dragon Boat Regatta will take place this October, featuring teams from 20 countries, making it one of the busiest tourism months for Sarawak. He urged more stakeholders and sponsors to support such events to reinforce Sarawak's position as a unique cultural destination.
