North Korea plans to build another 5,000-tonne destroyer
SEOUL : North Korea vowed to build an additional 5,000-tonne destroyer for its navy, state media reported Tuesday, after the nuclear-armed country launched two similar vessels this year.
Leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to ramp up his country's naval capacities and presided over the April launch of the country's first 5,000-tonne destroyer-class naval ship, the Choe Hyon.
South Korea's military has said the ship could have been developed with Russian help, possibly in exchange for deploying thousands of troops to help Moscow fight in Ukraine.
Kim also presided over the botched launch of the destroyer Kang Kon in May, which was subsequently repaired and set afloat in June.
Workers at the Nampho Shipyard pledged Monday at a rally to complete the new warship by October 10 next year, according to Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency.
The date marks the anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea.
The North will now construct the 'Choe Hyon-class Destroyer No. 3', which it described as 'a powerful warship of our own type'.
The Nampho dockyard manager urged workers to meet the construction deadline to uphold the party's 'plan for building a powerful army' and 'to firmly defend the inviolable maritime sovereignty and national interests', KCNA said.
South Korea's new president, Lee Jae-myung, elected last month in a snap election, has promised a more dovish approach towards Pyongyang compared with that of his hawkish impeached predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol.
The Lee administration has halted loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts along the border, which Seoul began last year following a barrage of trash-filled balloons flown southward by Pyongyang.
Seemingly in response, North Korea also ended its own propaganda broadcasts which had relayed strange and eerie noises into the South.

Tengku Zafrul explains how Boeing deal led to reduced tariffs
Tengku Zafrul Aziz said the Boeing aircraft are being bought by Malaysia Aviation Group with its own funds. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The US decided to reduce its planned tariffs on Malaysian exports after it learned of 'huge purchases' of US products by Malaysian companies, according to investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz. Tengku Zafrul said Malaysia had listed Malaysia Airlines' planned acquisition of Boeing aircraft as among the big-ticket purchases being made from the US. By adopting such an approach, Malaysia proved to the US that 'we, too, were huge buyers of their products and this convinced them to reduce the tariffs to 19% from the previous 25%', he said in a post on X tonight. He said Malaysia did not buy the planes 'just so we could reduce the tariffs'. Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul said Malaysia had committed to purchasing the 30 Boeing aircraft, valued at US$9.5 billion, as one of the conditions to reduce the US tariff on Malaysian imports. In March, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) said it had ordered 18 Boeing 737-8 and 12 Boeing 737-10 aircraft, to be delivered by 2030, and placed an option to buy 30 more 737 aircraft. Orders for hundreds of Boeing jets have been announced over the past week in deals with Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Cambodia, Bangladesh, and other countries as part of negotiations to reduce US tariffs. Tengku Zafrul denied that government funds were being used to purchase the planes. He said MAG would buy the planes using its own funds.

PM: Govt to restore ‘pondok' institutions with new technology and AI
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — The government will restore and elevate the nation's 'pondok' institutions to ensure they remain a bulwark for the faith, morals, and character of the Muslim community, in line with modern demands, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He stated that this initiative involves cooperation between the Ministry of Finance and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) to ensure that religious schools and pondok institutions that are in poor condition can be developed with new facilities and technology. 'We want to add new technology, including information technology, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence, so that this bulwark remains the strongest one to defend the faith, morals, and character of the Ummah,' he said at the opening ceremony of the 65th International Al-Quran Recital and Memorisation Competition (MTHQA) at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL) yesterday. Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. Anwar said history proves that while the country's political, economic, and educational systems bowed to the colonisers, the pondok institutions remained the last bastion defending the identity of the Muslim community. Additionally, the Prime Minister announced that he will launch the Mushaf Ummah Program on Aug 8 in an effort to expand the dissemination of the Quran and the message of Islam worldwide through official translations into 30 world languages. 'In all my travels around the world - to Peru, Brazil, France, Cambodia, and dozens of other countries in recent years - every time I visit, I bring the Quran along with a translation in that country's language, and we distribute it officially. This, I believe, is a good approach,' he said. This year's 65th MTHQA, running from Aug 2 to 9, 2025, features the theme 'Developing a MADANI Ummah' and brings together 71 participants from 49 countries. Malaysia is represented by four participants: Aiman Ridhwan Mohamad Ramlan from Perak and Wan Sofea Aini Wan Mohd Zahidi from Terengganu for the Recital category, while Muhammad Adib Ahmad Rozaini from Perak and Putri Auni Khadijah Mohd Hanif from Kelantan are in the Memorisation category. The winners of the two categories will receive RM40,000 in cash, the runners-up will get RM30,000, and third place will receive RM20,000, along with jewelry sponsored by the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YaPEIM). — Bernamaa

Tengku Zafrul: Boeing jet deal a strategic move, not a waste of public funds
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — Malaysia Aviation Group's (MAG) purchase of Boeing aircraft is not a waste of taxpayers' money as alleged by certain quarters but rather a strategic business decision that was planned in advance and will be fully financed using the company's funds, said Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister explained that the purchase decision had been announced as early as March this year, prior to United States (US) President Donald Trump's announcement of any new import tariff on goods. 'So what does this purchase have to do with tariff negotiations? 'The US imposed the tariffs partly due to the trade deficit. This means we sold more goods to the US than we bought from the country, so the US sought to reduce this deficit by imposing high tariffs of 25 per cent,' he said in a post on his official X social media account yesterday. Hence, Tengku Zafrul said, Malaysia took the opportunity by listing all big-ticket purchases planned by Malaysian companies from the US, including the Boeing aircraft order. 'We are not making the purchase just to reduce tariffs,' he stressed. According to him, this demonstrated to the US that Malaysia is also a major buyer of its products, thus finally convincing the US to lower import tariffs on Malaysian goods from 25 per cent to 19 per cent. 'This smart strategy is the result of careful negotiations, ensuring that the interests of both companies and the country are protected,' he added. In March this year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that MAG had placed a firm order for 30 Boeing 737 aircraft, scheduled for delivery by 2030. — Bernama
