Coast Guard begins salvage operation and investigates cause of boat collision that killed two girls
Capt. Frank Florio, commander of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Miami, assured the victims' family members during a news conference that the Coast Guard and its partners would do everything in their power to learn what caused the crash.
'We owe you answers, and we are committed to finding them,' Florio said.
Officials didn't immediately identify any of the victims or release a cause for the crash.
The collision between a barge and a sailboat occurred around 11 a.m. Monday in Biscayne Bay, between Miami and Miami Beach. All six people on the sailboat, a teenage sailing camp counselor and five children, ended up in the water. They were in their last week of a camp for children aged 7 to 15, according to the Miami Yacht Club.
All six were pulled from the water, and four were rushed to a Miami hospital, officials said. A 7-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl were pronounced dead shortly after arriving, while two other girls, ages 8 and 11, remained in critical condition Tuesday. A 19-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl were rescued but not hospitalized.
Local media and prominent TV personalities in Argentina identified the 7-year-old girl killed in the boating crash as Mila Yankelevich, the daughter of director Tomas Yankelevich and actress Sofia Reca and granddaughter of the prominent Argentine television producers Gustavo Yankelevich and Cris Morena.
Marcelo Tinelli, a popular TV host and friend of the family, posted on X that he was 'devastated' by Mila's death.
'I can't believe it,' he wrote. 'My immense love to the entire family, who are part of my life.'
Actor and presenter Nicolás Vázquez, currently starring in the musical 'Rocky' produced by Gustavo Yankelevich, expressed his heartbreak on Instagram.
'Mila's passing is one of those tragedies that hurts to the soul,' he wrote. Addressing Yankelevich he added: 'Even if we are not blood relatives, what we feel makes us brothers.'
Across the U.S. last year, there were over 550 deaths in recreational boating, but only a sliver of those — 43 — were caused by vessels crashing into each other, according to Coast Guard statistics.

Y'all can have an opinion, y'all could say this and that, but at the end of the day, our lives aren't going to change. 'If I say something to y'all right now, the same thing's going to happen. It doesn't really affect life, it doesn't affect the way we live. Dana White says UFC fight on the White House lawn is 'absolutely' happening
A UFC fight at the White House looks primed to take place on the Fourth of July next year. 'It's absolutely going to happen,' UFC CEO and President Dana White told The Associated Press in a story published Aug. 12. White's comments come on the heels of a billion-dollar deal to bring UFC to CBS that was announced on Monday, Aug. 11. The agreement will give CBS and streaming service Paramount+ exclusive rights to broadcast 30 UFC Fight Nights and 13 marquee events each year beginning 2026, which could include the Fourth of July brawl at the White House. 'Think about that, the 250th birthday of the United States of America, the UFC will be on the White House south lawn live on CBS," White told the AP. White is scheduled to travel to Washington, D.C. on Aug. 28 to meet with Trump and his daughter, Ivanka, to discuss plans for the fight, the AP reported. The deal between UFC and CBS was announced just days after the network and Skydance officially closed an $8 billion merger and doubles the annual value of UFC's current U.S. rights deal with ESPN+, according to reporting from Sportico. The deal also signals the end of the existing pay-per-view model currently utilized by the UFC. Trump floated idea of UFC fight at White House this past 4th of July Trump first floated the idea of having a UFC fight on White House grounds on this past Fourth of July. "Every one of our national park battlefields and historic sites are going to have special events in honor of America 250," Trump said. "And I even think we're going to have a UFC fight. We're going to have a UFC fight on the grounds of the White House." "Championship fight − full fight," he added. 4 arrests after home reportedly owned by Brad Pitt was ransacked by burglars, police say
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Four people have been arrested in connection with a burglary earlier this summer at a Los Angeles home reportedly owned by actor Brad Pitt, police said Tuesday. Officers responded June 25 to a break-in at the house in LA's Los Feliz neighborhood. Police said at the time that suspects broke in through the front window, ransacked the home and fled with miscellaneous property. Detectives have made four arrests, Officer Drake Madison said Tuesday. He said the suspects' names could be released later in the day. Officials could not identify who owned or lived in the home, and no information was available on what was stolen. Pitt reportedly bought the property for $5.5 million in April 2023, according to Traded, a commercial real estate website. Pitt had been out of the country in June on a globe-spanning promotional tour for his new movie, 'F1.'
