New historical fiction novel inspired by a folk song about a Scottish hero.
John Ogden has just published his new novel which tells the story of Jack the Painter, a man who single-handedly almost succeeded in bringing the Royal Navy to its knees. The story is interwoven with that of Will, a modern-day veteran, who is teetering on the edge of life. Over one night they tell each other their stories. Jack's tale of his role in the American War of Independence, and how he almost single-handedly brought it to an early end; Will's of fighting for freedom in a world which soon forgets the fallen and fractured. Paint it Jack Tired of his dead-end factory job, Will - a lad from the North-East of England - joins the army where he goes to fight in the War on Terror. He becomes a man able to save and take lives until one day his world falls apart. Broken and despairing he meets Jack, another lost soul, in the shadows of Old Portsmouth. Jack, born and brought up in Edinburgh's Cowgate and once England's most wanted man, also fought for freedom but his fight was many years ago. As the night passes they tell each other their stories: Jack's tale of his role in the American War of Independence, and how he almost single-handedly brought it to an early end; Will's of fighting for freedom in a world which soon forgets the fallen and fractured. The historical fiction novel Paint it Jack is set in Scotland, England, the USA and France of the late 18th century, and Portsmouth, Afghanistan and Durham of the early 21st century; it is a story of hopes, heroes, fear, loss and redemption. The author. How did the book come about? Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A few years ago John came across a book of folk songs in a Hampshire Museum. The most modern of the songs was from the 1960s it was 'The ballad of Jack the Painter'. In it the songwriter celebrates – 200 or so years after the event - the death and grisly afterlife of Jack the Painter. Why would someone feel the need to celebrate something long past? John needed to understand who Jack was, where he came from, what he did and why he still inspired resentment, these themes inspired the writing of the book. As John researched Jack's story and travelled across the country he came across more and more homeless veterans who were living on the edge of life, He felt compelled to tell their story. The book interweaves two stories Jack's and Will's the latter a composite of many of the homeless veterans John met. Author Biography John Ogden was born in North-East England. On leaving school he went to work in a factory spending his evenings playing drums with a number of bands. In his early twenties he headed towards London in search of musical fame and fortune, something which never materialised. He eventually put down his drumsticks and as he was already able to count to four became an accountant. Always fascinated by words he began to write and perform poetry appearing regularly on Vanessa Feltz's popular BBC Radio 2 show and at Open Mic sessions. After half a lifetime away he returned to his native North-East in 2022. John now lives with his wife Janet in the beautiful North Yorkshire coastal town of Whitby, where he hopes to add to its considerable stock of stories. Paint it Jack is John's first book. James Aitken AKA Jack the Painter Where can people buy the book? If readers find themselves in Whitby, Paint it Jack can be bought from Holman's Bookshop and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, from the publisher's website or from Amazon.

Justin Bieber fans slam singer for 'smoking roll-up in front of baby son' in new photos
Justin Bieber has come under fire from fans who were left concerned after he shared a series of photos from a recent getaway that featured the singer's son, Jack. Justin Bieber fans were quick to voice their worries after the Peaches singer posted several snapshots from a recent holiday, some of which included his young son he shares with Hailey Bieber. Among the images, the 31-year-old pop sensation was seen lounging on a sofa alongside his infant son Jack. In another image, Justin was captured on the same sofa but in the company of a mate as they enjoyed a roll-up together. Although there wasn't any direct indication that Jack remained beside him or even in the vicinity during the smoking session, followers flocked to the comment section to criticise the Confident hitmaker. "Don't smoke in front your kid," one concerned fan said, while others leapt to Justin's defence, countering: "He's not, it's different moments clearly." Another angry fan expressed disbelief, writing: "Bestie you did not just smoke in front of baby Jack." One fan urged better behaviour, saying: "Dude there is no way you have that baby around that smoke... be better like we know you can be," and another highlighted: "Children are particularly vulnerable to health problems from exposure to smoke, including both cigarette and marijuana (pot) smoke," cataloguing the numerous risks associated with smoke inhalation, reports the Mirror. However, many addressed these worried comments by pointing out that the smoking appeared to have occurred at a different time from when Jack was present on the sofa with Justin. A supporter clarified the situation, saying: "If you notice in the photo, when Justin was smoking, Jack wasn't around him or near him. It's very clear that Justin wasn't smoking around the baby. And the photo of Justin and Jack was taken at a different moment." In recent weeks, Justin has sparked concern among his followers with a series of candid social media posts. Breaking his silence on the matter, he confessed to having caused pain to others. On Instagram, he opened up: "I'm just an average flawed guy, I've done things that have hurt others, I continue to do and say things that hurt others unintentionally. "Yet I woke up this morning with another opportunity to grow and not be so selfish today. Love draws us in. Love doesn't condemn. Love believes the best. Love hopes all things and endures all things. It doesn't keep record of wrong. Love helps u to forgive and love even your enemies." He continued in a subsequent post: "I sometimes think I'm gonna get exposed if I tell people how selfish I am. Like if I admitted that, maybe people wouldn't like me or trust me. I thought if I was honest about the selfish things I was feeling that I was gonna be disqualified from the dreams I had of being included. "But the more honest I am about where I really am. The more freedom I actually have. The truth is I wake up every morning. Some days I'm optimistic, sometimes I wake up pessimistic, I can't control how I'm gonna feel, I would find myself even subconsciously blaming god for the bad feeling I woke up with rather than communicate with him and ask him to help me have a change of perspective. "I've been really asking God to help me see the best in people, even after being used in the way I have. Once again, it's easier to point the finger than it is to take ownership. It's easy to say damn their greedy rather than to check the greed in our own hearts. Only God can remove the greed and selfishness from our hearts. Trying harder won't work. Cuz I tried lol."
