Review: ‘Lonely People With Power' Is Deafheaven At Their Best

Forbes01-04-2025
The San Francisco metal outfit is back with another stellar LP, one which is easily their best sounding album to date and possibly their best overall. Deafheaven's sixth studio album, Lonely People With Power, is the culmination of the many slight turns the band has taken in their sound over the last 13 years. The sharpest of these turns was easily the band's previous LP, 2021's Infinite Granite, which saw the band adopt a more alternative rock and shoegaze focused direction. Furthermore, it was the first time the band had teamed up with producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen, who's also returned for the band's latest record.
Infinite Granite marked a turning point for Deafheaven just as it did for some of their fanbase, particularly those who didn't favor the noticeable lack of heavy riffs and blast beats. Regardless of whether Infinite Granite worked for you or not is separate from the fact that it was Deafheaven's most ambitious and best sounding record at the time. This aspect has certainly carried over into Lonely People With Power, and it's a testament to the band's honed sonic palette and their chemistry with Justin Meldal-Johnsen.
Mixing engineer Zack Weeks from GodCity Studios also did a tremendous job on this LP, and it's well worth sitting through with a decent sound system or pair of headphones. The ripping guitar tones captured on a number of the tracks combined with the ambient textures layered throughout the album are truly some of the album's biggest strengths. Not to mention that the incredible performances captured on this LP showcase the band at their absolute peak, especially drummer Daniel Tracy.
Of course, it's one thing if an album's production is on point, but the songwriting is ultimately what matters most. Like the myriad of sonic elements Deafheaven paint throughout this LP, the songwriting excellently combines the band's trademark black metal riffs and softer shoegaze moments. 'The Garden Route,' for instance, is a brilliant display of how far Deafheaven has come with balancing the dynamics of their contrasting genres — the tremolo guitar drone in the verses provides an eerie and haunting setup for the one-two punch of a spine-shaking chorus and outro on this track. Similarly, the guitar leads that soar atop big climactic moments like those on 'Doberman' and "Heathen' blend really well with the chaotic instrumentals.
There are songs like this throughout the record that combine elements of 2021's Infinite Granite with the raw heaviness of Deafheaven's early albums. Taking it a step further, Deafheaven even experiments with more death-metal-like moments than ever before. Tracks 'Revelator' and 'Magnolia' feature serrated guitar hooks that instantly sink their teeth into you upon hearing them. It's almost as if Deafheaven's overlooked 2019 single 'Black Brick' was teasing this sonic direction for the future.
The melancholic black metal that Deafheaven has coined with albums Sunbather and New Bermuda is also present once again, but it's carved into songs in a more nuanced fashion than heard in their previous records. Not until the end of the album, with tracks 'Winona' and 'The Marvelous Orange Tree' does the band embrace their iconic 'major key' black metal, with Sunbather-like moments scattered throughout these tracks. Overall, Lonely People With Power does feel darker in its tone and delivery than any of the band's more recent LPs, which is a welcomed return.
The jury is still out on whether or not Lonely People With Power is Deafheaven's best album. Sunbather (2013), New Bermuda (2015), and even their 2021 full-shoegaze outing Infinite Granite, all accomplish something sonically and stylistically unique, on top of being stellar LPs. Sure, Sunbather will forever be hailed as the album that put Deafheaven on every metal and indie fan's radar, and there's a solid argument to call it their best album. However, there's just no other Deafheaven album that's as dynamically complete and satisfyingly dark as Lonely People With Power. If you're a fan of Deafheaven, this album is one to cherish, furthermore if you're new to Deafheaven, Lonely People With Power might be the best place to start.
Verdict: 9/10

Golden Retriever Faces 'Stranger Danger'—Hysterics at How It All Ends

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A golden retriever's reaction to a stranger getting into his home has gone viral on social media, leaving users in hysterics. In a video shared on TikTok in July by @madsalex21, the golden retriever can be seen standing right behind a glass door as the woman lets herself in, wagging his tail and greeting her as if she was his owner. "My dog has never met the woman entering my house and this was his reaction," reads layover text in the clip. The caption says: "Stranger danger? Never heard of it." Meanwhile the pup, despite not knowing her, can be seen zooming from one end of the room to the other, before eventually settling in for cuddles from the kind stranger. Golden retrievers are known for being extra friendly dogs, not only to their owners and people they love, but to strangers too, that's why they don't make the best guardians. If your are looking for a guardian dog, the best options, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC), include German shepherd, doberman pinscher, bullmastiff, rottweiler, and Staffordshire bull terrier among others. German shepherds are generally considered dogkind's finest all-purpose workers, they're loyal, confident, courageous, and willing to put their life on the line in defense of loved ones. Doberman pinschers are sleek and powerful, and also very intelligent. They are fearless and vigilant, and are considered to be among the world's finest protection dogs. Bullmastiffs are docile at home and fearless at work. They are large, and muscular dogs, who make both world-class protectors and awesome family companions. Rottweilers are strong and robust working dogs descended from the mastiffs of the Roman legions. They are courageous but also calm and confident. They also love curling up on their owners' lap for cuddles like toy breeds do. Staffordshire Bull Terriers are muscular, energetic, and affectionate, known for their courage and tenacity. Though originally bred for fighting, modern Staffords are loyal, family-friendly companions. However, early socialization and training are essential. Entry, please'- All Golden Retrievers." Jordie Cahill said: "Welcome! If you will follow me I'll show you where allllllllll the good stuff to take is!" Owner Asks Internet Why Dog Is 'So Sneaky,' What They Capture Goes Viral

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A "terrifying" dog sneaking up on his owner has captivated—and spooked—internet viewers. A dog owner, Nicole, who uses the TikTok tag @nicocohoh0, posted a video of her pet's unusual—and slightly scary—behavior. The clip has received over 572,000 likes and more than 2.8 million views on the platform. Overlaying the footage, Nicole wrote: "Can someone explain to me why my dog is so sneaky?" In the caption, she added: "It's actually a little terrifying …" The video shows the blond dog, Milo, peeking around the side of a door frame, staring intently at their owner, and sticking one leg out. TikTok users were quick to respond to the peculiar scene. "Have you heard of skinwalkers?" asked Brandon Vega. "He looks like the skinwalker dog," posted Harper. "My girl does this too! She drops a Frisbee, runs behind a bush and peeks. Such a little weirdo," shared one user. "The leg is fryyying me," added another. Stock image: A golden retriever peeks from behind the door. Experts at HowStuffWorks say that, in Navajo (Diné) folklore, a skinwalker is an evil witch who can transform into, possess, or disguise themselves as an animal. Known as yee naaldlooshii—meaning "with it, he goes on all fours"—skinwalkers are often said to take the form of coyotes, wolves, foxes, or bears, though they can appear as any animal. Skinwalkers are believed to possess supernatural powers, including extreme speed, mimicry, mind control, and the ability to place curses. In animal form, their eyes may glow red when illuminated, adding to their fearsome reputation. More TikTok Reactions "I wasn't scared until I saw how long he is," posted user Demi. "We had a Doberman who did this, she used to hide behind the garage and sneak around when she'd hear my husband coming. He used to try to sneak down to her, but he never caught her out. She'd jump out and come with the tail wagging and jump up on him," commented Angela. "The chances of being stalked by your own golden retriever are low, but never zero," added Kara. "You sure he isn't hunting you," asked another user. Newsweek reached out to @nicocohoh0 for comment via TikTok. We could not verify the details of the case. Doberman Spends 1 Night With Grandma, Then Everything Changes

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A dog owner was left stunned by the undeniable attitude she received from her Doberman after returning from just one night away. Jess McLaughlin from Calgary, Canada traveled to Edmonton for one evening to watch her beloved Edmonton Oilers in the playoffs. That meant getting her in-laws to dogsit her 2-year-old Doberman named Arlo for the night, which she knew he definitely wouldn't mind. Arlo loves his grandparents, as McLaughlin tells Newsweek that he's "always very excited" to see them, even if it means his owners will be elsewhere. Without a doubt, Arlo is willing to take one for the team if it means getting to spend quality time grandma and grandpa. "He loves when both his grandma and grandpa are here, and lots of spoiling takes place," McLaughlin said. "Arlo is like a grandpup to my mother-in-law, and he follows her everywhere and lays beside her on the couch, often while she knits." Arlo the Doberman with his grandma on the couch together. As much as she knew he was content with his grandparents, it would be nice to know he missed her dearly. However, absence really didn't make the heart grow fonder for Arlo, who appeared to have "pledged allegiance to grandma" instead. As they all sat around together, Arlo lay beside his grandma and gave his owner an iconic death stare. When he was done staring at McLaughlin, Arlo gently and lovingly rested his head on his grandma's lap to prove his point. "I thought it was funny the bit of attitude I got from him. His actions definitely made me think I was chopped liver for the time being, and Grandma was his new primary human," McLaughlin continued. She couldn't resist sharing the footage on Arlo's dedicated Instagram account (@ and the clip went viral. In just a matter of days, the video has amassed over 6.2 million views and 207,000 likes on Instagram at the time of writing. The caption alongside the video reads: "That head turn at the end? Sorry, your time is up mom." When it was time for his grandparents to leave, Arlo was certainly sad to see them go. McLaughlin explained that whenever Arlo sees someone packing a bag, he tends to know what that means, and he'll sit there watching them. Hopefully, his owners will treat him to another night with his favorite babysitters soon. There's no denying how much he loves his grandma, but it's his grandpa who is the "ultimate spoiler" and offers up the most treats. Between the pair of them, they make sure that Arlo is well spoiled. Since the Instagram video was posted on July 14, it has gained over 1,000 comments from internet users lauding Arlo's antics. One comment reads: "They act like they don't know what home is when they get with grandma." Another Instagram user wrote: "That dog is a Libra. Once you've disappointed us, we're done with you." While another person joked: "Oh look my Uber driver is here." Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share? We want to see the best ones!
