Energy, tech, and finance sectors feel comms pressure in Africa
Strategic communications is under pressure. Regulation is accelerating. Investors are scrutinising more closely. And public backlash now lands in hours, not days. Across industries, communications is no longer just about visibility – it's about viability. For leaders in Africa's most dynamic sectors, comms has become a frontline function for managing regulatory complexity, investor expectations, and social trust. It's no longer optional. It's operational. In Africa, where younger regulatory systems can be fragmented and enforcement uneven, this shift is sharper. A missed message doesn't just weaken reputation but risks investor confidence, compliance, and public trust – making strategic comms no longer optional. It's operational. In PRCA Africa and APRA's 2024 report on the state of PR and ethics in Africa, risk preparedness comes out as a leading communications challenge across the continent. It's an insight echoed in APO Group's own client data. In the first half of 2025, demand for reputational crisis support rose significantly. A dipstick poll of our 57,000+ LinkedIn network also flagged energy and sustainability, and tech and digital as sectors in need of attention in Africa. The takeaway: visibility alone is no longer enough. Here are three sectors where the pressure is most acute. 1. Energy and sustainability: ESG expectations without the guardrails With COP30 approaching and ESG frameworks being reassessed globally, African energy players are under the pump. The EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) has been delayed, while the US SEC has scaled back ESG disclosure rules. Meanwhile, the UN's 2025 SDG Progress Report shows that only 15% of goals are on track. In this vacuum, the narrative is up for grabs. From Nigeria's diversification strategy to South Africa's unbundling reforms and Namibia's green push, communicators must now translate ambiguity into trust-building messaging. And sustainability communications must stand up to activist, investor, and local scrutiny without the cushion of global consensus. 2. Tech and digital: AI moves faster than the messaging In Kenya, Nigeria, and Ghana, AI adoption is racing ahead of legislation. This puts PR teams on the front line: managing deepfake risk, public confusion over AI applications, and the reputational implications of algorithmic bias – all before regulatory frameworks are finalised. Without this certainty, legal and compliance voices are prone to shaping communications more conservatively. The next frontier is electoral interference: with several African nations holding elections in 2025, concerns are mounting that AI-generated misinformation, including deepfakes, could be used to manipulate public sentiment or discredit political figures. Already, the African Union and Kenya's National Cohesion and Integration Commission have raised early warnings about AI-driven disinformation campaigns seeded through social media networks. For PR teams, this means that election-year communications strategies must now include real-time fact-checking, media training to counter visual manipulation, and crisis protocols for false attribution. Meanwhile, Kenya's Data Protection Act and other regional privacy laws are reshaping how companies communicate consent and transparency. Cybersecurity threats are now regular boardroom topics, and PR teams must respond with proactive, trust-driven messaging strategies. 3. Financial services: Rebuilding trust in a high-friction regulatory era As Africa's fintech sector matures, communications leaders are navigating not just launch PR, but investor confidence issues and consumer trust erosion. The Central Bank of Nigeria's mobile money rules and the East African Community's cross-border payments integration are prompting firms to localise trust messaging in real time. In Ghana, the Bank of Ghana suspended the operations of several digital lenders in 2024 over breaches of consumer protection rules. This came after a spike in complaints about predatory loan terms and data privacy violations. The fallout damaged public trust and exposed a gap in crisis preparedness: many brands lacked clear communication during enforcement and struggled to rebuild credibility. In 2025, those that recovered best were the ones who treated communications as a regulatory ally, not an afterthought. What next: Strategy, not sentiment From image-building to operational discipline, comms leaders across sectors must recalibrate. High-performing teams embed communications into policy forecasts, regulatory roadmaps, and investor dialogues – not just campaigns. And responses must be turned around in hours, not days. Done well, communications can be an organisation's operating system for trust, alignment, and action – and in 2025, the difference between proactive and reactive comms is reputational survival. Oil steadies on potential Trump-Putin meeting in coming days
Oil prices steadied on Thursday, paring early gains after the Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet U.S. President Donald Trump in the coming days, raising expectations for a diplomatic end to the war in Ukraine. Brent crude futures were up 21 cents, or 0.3%, at $67.1 a barrel by 0902 GMT while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained 20 cents, or 0.3%, to $64.55. Both benchmarks slid about 1% on Wednesday, touching their lowest in eight weeks, after comments from Trump on progress in talks with Moscow. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said on Thursday that Trump and Putin will meet in the coming days in what would be the first summit between leaders of the two countries since 2021. A White House official had previously said that Trump could meet Putin as soon as next week, though the U.S. continued preparations to impose secondary sanctions, potentially including China, to pressure Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. Oil is modestly up, benefiting from a crude draw in the U.S., higher Saudi prices for Asia and solid Chinese crude imports in July, said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo, adding that gains were curbed by news of the potential Trump-Putin meeting next week. Russia is the world's second-biggest producer of oil behind the United States. The Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday that U.S. crude oil stockpiles fell by 3 million barrels to 423.7 million barrels in the week ended August 1, exceeding an expected decline of 591,000 barrels in a Reuters poll of analysts. In China, crude oil imports in July dipped 5.4% from June but were still up 11.5% year on year, with analysts expecting refining activity to remain firm in the near term. Powering the future: Unlocking Africa's renewable energy potential
From space, Earth is an incredible sight at nighttime. Across the planet, millions of lights illuminate coastal outlines, pinpoint populated urban areas, and map out the interconnectivity between metropolitan areas. But when you look towards Africa, the darkness is striking. It tells a sobering story of over half a billion people on the continent who still lack access to electricity, making the continent one of the least electrified regions globally. This energy gap is both a human development crisis and a missed economic opportunity. With an extraordinary endowment of renewable energy resources, Africa's energy landscape should look vastly different. Solar photovoltaic potential alone could generate 1,5 million terawatt hours (TWh) per year. Wind power adds another 980 000 TWh annually, alongside 350 GW in hydro capacity and 15 GW in geothermal. A recent study suggests that by 2040, renewables could meet up to 80% of Africa's energy needs. The natural abundance is, therefore, not the issue. The challenge lies in converting this potential into scalable, sustainable energy systems. Africa at the crossroads of global energy transition Africa is not only key to its own energy transformation, it is central to the global clean energy transition. Yet, despite holding 60% of the world's best solar resources, the continent accounts for just 1% of installed solar generation capacity. The investment gap is stark: over USD 20 billion per year is required to meet Africa's energy and climate goals by 2030, yet clean energy investment in the region comprises only 2% of the global total. Financial capital alone is not enough. To attract meaningful investment, Africa must implement regulatory frameworks that make clean power bankable. Projects need predictability, legal protection, and risk-aligned structures to succeed. Governments must prioritise integrated, transparent policy environments that build investor confidence and unlock capital. With South Africa assuming the G20 Presidency, there is an unprecedented opportunity to position Africa as a frontier for renewable energy deployment. Regional collaboration, underpinned by smart policy and strong governance, can catalyse the transformation from resource-rich to energy-secure. Restore the grid before building the capacity Africa's power pools, including the Southern, Eastern, Central, and West African Power Pools, represent critical steps towards integrated regional energy systems. Lessons from global initiatives like the Nordic Power Market and Central American Interconnection System show that regional cooperation can deliver stable, cross-border electricity markets. But Africa faces a more foundational issue: inadequate infrastructure. Average grid losses of 15% and poor interconnectivity mean even the best renewable projects cannot reach underserved communities. Without reliable transmission and distribution networks, capacity growth is meaningless. The first priority must be to identify and deliver strategic infrastructure projects that expand and modernise the grid. These investments will unlock renewable energy corridors linking resource-rich areas to regions with high energy demand. From there, climate-resilient infrastructure plans can be supported by tailored G20 policy mechanisms and de-risked capital structures. Enabling bankable execution through finance innovation To create a truly investable environment, African energy markets need more than ambition. They require deep structuring expertise and innovative finance solutions that reflect the continent's unique economic and political realities. Development finance institutions, multilaterals, and private banks must work in tandem to design instruments that reduce risk and ensure long-term project viability. Absa has played a leading role in this space. In 2024 alone, the Group facilitated over R49,2 billion in sustainable finance. Notably, we arranged half of all closed projects under South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), a flagship model for blended finance and public-private partnership in renewables. Beyond energy, the bank's work on the Tanga UWASA Green Bond in Tanzania led to the country's first municipal green bond, connecting over 6 000 households to clean water. It also showcased how green capital can drive both climate impact and inclusive growth. These projects illustrate the power of partnership, technical depth, and local insight to turn Africa's potential into progress. From potential to power Africa is projected to be home to more than 25% of the global population within the next 25 years. Electrifying this growth is not just an African imperative — it's a global one. The tools exist. The capital exists. The renewable resources are abundant. What remains is the political will, policy coherence, and financial innovation to translate ambition into action. With decisive investment, smart regulation, and regional cooperation, Africa can lead the next wave of the global energy transition not just as a participant, but as a pioneer. The time to act is now.
