3 takeaways as the Chicago White Sox win a series, including how the rookie catchers are faring

Miguel Vargas drilled a 2-1 sinker over the left-field wall for a two-run home run in the first inning. The Chicago White Sox didn't get another hit until Chase Meidroth singled in the ninth. Meidroth later scored as part of a three-run rally, but the Sox couldn't complete the comeback in a 7-5 loss to the Kansas City Royals in front of 22,137 on Sunday at Rate Field. 'Great example of continuing to battle,' manager Will Venable said. The Vargas home run gave the Sox a 2-0 lead. Salvador Perez tied it with a two-run home run in the fourth against Mike Vasil, who made his first major-league start. Jonathan India put the Royals ahead in the seventh with an RBI double. Maikel Garcia collected an RBI single later in the inning, making it 4-2. India drove in another run in the ninth with a single. Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-run home run in the inning, extending the Royals' lead to 7-2. The first five batters reached in the bottom of the ninth as the Sox chipped away at the deficit. They loaded the bases with two outs, but Carlos Estévez struck out Tim Elko to end the game. 'We didn't get the result we wanted, but it's good that we fought through the whole game,' Vargas said. The Sox (22-44) settled for taking two out of three in the series. Here are three takeaways from Rate Field. The Sox scored five runs in the eighth inning of Friday's 7-2 victory, which included a two-run single by Luis Robert Jr. Edgar Quero provided an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning of Saturday's 4-1 win. Sunday, the late offensive production came in the ninth. Trailing by five runs, Mike Tauchman led off the inning with a walk against reliever Trevor Richards. Singles by Meidroth and Andrew Benintendi followed. Vargas drew a bases-loaded walk. Quero greeted Estévez with an RBI single, making it 7-4. Austin Slater hit a liner that appeared to be headed to left field, but Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. made a diving catch for the first out. 'The athleticism is incredible to watch,' Venable said of Witt. 'He's got a great feel for the game.' A run scored when Robert grounded into a fielder's choice. Josh Rojas walked, loading the bases for Elko. With the rain starting to fall harder, Estévez struck out Elko. 'They continue to focus and continue to grind,' Venable said. 'Credit to (the Royals) for pitching really well and credit to our guys for continuing to stay in there and fight.' Tyler Alexander's day began in Milwaukee. A few hours later, he was on the mound for the Sox. 'Today has been a whirlwind,' Alexander said. The Sox signed the left-hander to a one-year, $760,000 deal on Sunday. 'Signing at noon, then an hour and a half (rideshare trip) from Milwaukee to here, then bullpen in the third inning and pitching in the fourth inning,' Alexander said. 'My first time doing all of that, but it was — try to keep a level head and not freak out too much.' Alexander allowed one run on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk in three innings. He entered with one out in the fourth, following Vasil. 'We had been talking to the White Sox prior to today so we knew that if I signed, there would be a good chance of me throwing today,' Alexander said. 'So mentally, I had prepared for it. 'Just try to go with the flow and I had faced the Royals already this year. I have a little cheat sheet scouting reports that I've been reading over. I was prepared to the best of my ability.' Alexander, 30, went 3-5 with a 6.19 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 21 games (four starts) with the Milwaukee Brewers this season before being designated for assignment on June 1. He's pitched for the Detroit Tigers (2019-23), Tampa Bay Rays (2024) and Brewers (2025). 'The guy literally just shows up and steps right into an outing, which is impressive,' Venable said. 'And I think that just speaks to what's attractive about him, which is the guy's been around, a nice mix from the left side, can pitch in multiple different roles.' In Sunday's corresponding moves, the Sox placed reliever Jared Shuster on the 15-day injured list with a blister on his left hand. His stint is retroactive to Thursday. To make room for Alexander on the 40-man roster, the Sox transferred left-hander Fraser Ellard to the 60-day injured list. Ellard has been on the IL since May 4 with a left lat strain. The youth movement continued for the Sox during the weekend with Kyle Teel's promotion to the majors. The 23-year-old catcher went 1-for-2 with two walks in his debut on Friday and collected two more hits as a designated hitter on Saturday. 'With Kyle, I've seen him play in a B game on a backfield in spring training and then playing that game (Friday) night, and he brought the same energy and focus to both types of environments,' Venable said before Saturday's game. Teel went 0-for-2 Sunday. The Sox got a lift offensively from Quero, also a rookie catcher, with his RBI single in the ninth. The plan is for the pair to split time behind the plate. 'I think that we're lucky that these guys are special players,' Venable said. 'Certainly they need support and help, but they go out there and they're capable and have the capacity to do a lot of the things that we're asking them to do. Credit to those guys for being outstanding players.'

Calls Mount for Punishment After Dangerous Incident During Braves-Giants

Calls Mount for Punishment After Dangerous Incident During Braves-Giants originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco Giants vs. Atlanta Braves game was interrupted Friday after a dangerous incident involving a fan during the fourth inning. Advertisement The Giants ultimately took the 5-4 win in extra innings thanks to a walk-off wild pitch by Atlanta, but that wasn't the lowlight of the night, at least judging by social media. In the top of the fourth inning with San Francisco leading 3-0, a sacrifice fly to right field plated Atlanta's first run after an unsuccessful throw to the plate from Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski. During which, a second baseball could be seen landing on the field from high above, just feet away from striking home plate umpire Andy Fletcher, who was in position to make a call. Atlanta Braves designated hitter Marcell Ozuna Jr (20) slides safely into home against San Francisco Giants catcher Patrick Edwards-Imagn Images "Where did the other ball come from?" asked the Giants play-by-play broadcaster. Advertisement "It came from the upper deck," his on-air partner responded as the Oracle Park home crowd began booing loudly. "Some clown threw the baseball on to the field." A post by Jomboy Media on Saturday suggested that this situation may have stemmed from a question a fan recently posed on the "SFGiants" Reddit. It reads, "Help me settle an ongoing debate I've had for years: Can the average male throw a ball from the view reserve seats (Section 315) all the way down to home plate?" Notably, a follow-up thread titled "Alright, which one of ya knuckleheads put this to the test?" emerged before Friday's game ended. Speaking to reporters after the game, Giants infielder infielder Tyler Fitzgerald called the act "dangerous," while manager Bob Melvin added it was "extremely odd," according to NBC Sports Bay Area. Advertisement Fans on social media were quick to call for punishment to be handed down on the person responsible for the throw. "I hope they found the idiot and he is jailed tonight then banned for life," a fan commented on X. "Lifetime ban," another echoed. "I have never seen that before in a baseball game," a fan wrote. "Whoever threw that ball from the stands onto the field during the play like that in the Giants Braves game is straight up going to jail. That was insanely dangerous." "ban him for life," someone else said. "if you do this, you should be banned across the MLB," argued another fan. "A FAN IN THE GIANTS BRAVES GAME JUST THREW A BALL AT HOME FROM THE STANDS DURING A PLAY AT THE PLATE," another posted on X, garnering over 2.9 million views. Advertisement Game two of the three-game series between the Giants and Braves is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET on Saturday at Oracle Park. Giants trade struggling 1B/OF LaMonte Wade Jr. and cash to Angels

San Francisco Giants first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr. (31) catches for an out on the Minnesota Twins at first base during the second inning of a baseball game Sunday, May 11, 2025, in Minneapolis. (AP Photo/Ellen Schmidt) ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels acquired veteran first baseman and outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. and cash from the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. The Angels will send cash or a player to be named to San Francisco for the 31-year-old Wade, who had been with the Giants since 2021. The team designated him for assignment last Wednesday. Advertisement Los Angeles right-hander Michael Darrell-Hicks was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Wade batted .167 with one homer and 15 RBIs for the Giants this season, his struggles culminating with a 2-for-17 performance on the team's most recent road trip. Wade hit a career-high .260 last season, and he gained a reputation in San Francisco for clutch late-game performances. The Angels currently have Nolan Schanuel at first base and six outfielders on their major league roster, but some have position flexibility. Angels general manager Perry Minasian and Giants general manager Zack Minasian are brothers. ___ AP MLB:
