Washington Sundar's Father Blasts BCCI Selectors Day After Match-Saving Ton vs England: "My Son Gets Dropped..."

Washington Sundar played a key role in India drawing the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England that ended on Sunday. India faced huge deficit of 311 runs after England scored 669 in the first innings. But thanks to tons from No. 5 Sundar (101*), No. 6 Ravindra Jadeja (107*), captain Shubman Gill (103) and a gritty 90 from KL Rahul, India kept the series alive with one Test to go. India trail England 1-2 after the first four Tests. After his son's fabulous display, Washington Sundar's father M Sundar ripped into the BCCI selectors for not giving him regular chances. Spin allrounder Sundar made his international debut 2017, and since then the 25-year-old has played 12 Tests, 23 ODIs and 54 T20Is. "Washington has been doing very well consistently. However, people tend to avoid and forget his performances. Other players get regular chances, only my son doesn't get them. Washington should consistently bat at number five like he did in the second innings of the fourth Test and get five to ten straight chances. My son was surprisingly not picked for the first Test against England," the cricketer's father M Sundar told TOI. "My son gets dropped even if he fails in just one or two matches. It is not fair. Washington scored an unbeaten 85 on a rank turner in Chennai against England back in 2021 and 96* against the same opposition in Ahmedabad during the same year. He would have been dropped even if those two knocks had ended up in centuries. Has this kind of an approach been maintained for any other Indian cricketer? He has become very strong after all this and the result is the performance which people are witnessing now," he added. Sundar's father went on to tell the publication about his son's achievement at the 2018 Nidahas Trophy, where he was the top wicket-taker with eight scalps. "My son was very economical despite it being his first overseas tour. He was dropped for 11 straight matches by RCB in the next edition of the IPL, despite his quality performances. Can you imagine his mentality? Washington scored a 14-ball 40 in his first match for SRH during the IPL 2022 season. He was sent at number six in the next match," he said. "Even his current team (GT) don't give him regular chances. He showcased his calibre in the IPL 2025 Eliminator against Mumbai Indians (MI), smashing 48 off 24 balls. Look at the way Yashasvi Jaiswal has been backed by RR. Washington hasn't been able to enjoy a consistent run even in case of domestic cricket."

Virat Kohli was set to be sacked as RCB captain in 2019, reveals ex IPL-teammate

Former England and Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Moeen Ali has revealed that the Bengaluru-based franchise came close to replacing Virat Kohli as captain as early as 2019. Speaking to India Today's sister channel SportsTak, Moeen said Parthiv Patel was all but appointed as captain of the franchise during Gary Kirsten's tenure as head Ali was part of RCB between 2019 and 2020 before moving on to Chennai Super Kings, where he enjoyed the most decorated spell of his Kohli remains one of RCB's longest-serving captains. While he led the team in a few matches from 2011, he officially took over from Daniel Vettori as full-time captain in 2013. Kohli continued in the role until 2021, when he stepped down citing workload management. "Yes, I think he was. I'm quite sure he was," Moeen said when asked whether Parthiv Patel had been considered for the RCB captaincy."In the final year when Gary Kirsten was there-after the first year, I believe-Parthiv was in line to become captain. He had a brilliant cricketing brain," Moeen added."That was the talk at the time. I don't know what happened or why it didn't materialise, but I'm sure he was seriously considered for the role." After leading RCB to the final in 2016, Kohli struggled to replicate that success in the following seasons. The team failed to reach the playoffs for three consecutive years, finishing last in both 2017 and 2019, and managing only a sixth-place finish in 2018. While Kohli's batting remained a mainstay for the side, his captaincy came under scrutiny after two bottom-placed finishes in three years, following the heartbreak of the 2016 RCB staged a resurgence in 2020, reaching the playoffs as Kohli's partnership with coach Simon Katich began to bear Kohli's departure from the role after the 2021 season, RCB handed the captaincy to Faf du Plessis. The team maintained a level of consistency in subsequent seasons. Their long wait for a maiden IPL title finally ended earlier this year under the leadership of Rajat Patidar. Kohli played a pivotal role in the 2025 title-winning campaign-mentoring Rajat on the field while letting his bat do the talking, amassing 657 runs in 15 Patel, meanwhile, did not feature in the IPL after the 2019 season. The former India wicketkeeper retired with 2,848 runs from 139 matches, having won titles with both Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Renowned for his astute cricketing mind, Parthiv joined Gujarat Titans as a mentor in 2025 and made an immediate impact in the role.- EndsTrending Reel
