Murder of mother and children has shaken community to its core, service told

The murder of a mother and her two children in Co Fermanagh has shaken the community 'to its core', mourners have heard.
A service of removal has taken place in Maguiresbridge for Vanessa Whyte and her children James Rutledge, 14, and Sara Rutledge, 13, ahead of their funeral in Co Clare on Saturday.
The three family members died in a shooting incident at a property in Drummeer Road in the Co Fermanagh village a week ago.
Agricultural contractor Ian Rutledge, 43, who died on Monday, is understood to be the only suspect in the shooting of his family.
Last week, police said a triple murder and attempted suicide was a line of inquiry.
Mourners gathered at St Mary's Church in Maguiresbridge on Wednesday morning, with several dressed in bright colours following a request from the family.
Large crowds lined the streets outside the church in advance of the service.
Among those who attended the service were Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O'Neill, former first minister Baroness Arlene Foster and Sinn Fein MP Pat Cullen.
Shortly after 11am the three coffins arrived and were brought to the front of the church as the hymn Abide By Me was sung.
During the service, a reading was delivered by Elizabeth Armstrong, principal of Enniskillen Royal Grammar School, where Sara and James were pupils.
In his homily, Father Raymond Donnelly said people had gathered in a church 'filled with grief'.
He added: 'There is a heaviness in the air, a silence within our hearts, that speaks volumes.
'The tragedy we have endured has shaken this community, and our country, to its core.
'We are left shocked, grieving, heartbroken, searching for meaning, grappling with questions too deep for words.'
He added: 'The loss of Vanessa and her two beautiful children, James and Sara – lives taken in such an unspeakable way – is more than any heart should bear.
'A woman full of kindness and warmth, a friend to so many here.
'And her children, so young, so vibrant, so full of promise.
'Their laughter rang through school corridors, through playing fields, especially on the GAA pitch, where they thrived with passion and joy.
'That zest for life, their infectious energy, their open smiles.
'Words fail us. And when words fail, we turn to the word of God.'
The priest told the grieving family members 'you are not alone'.
He added: 'We stand with you.
'We hold you in prayer and embrace. We do not have answers, but we offer presence. We offer prayer. We offer love.
'To the classmates of Sara and James and to all the friends, know that it is OK to feel confused, angry, sad and to cry.
'Please speak to someone. Speak to your parents, to your teachers, to your clergy.'
Fr Donnelly told mourners that grief is 'not something to carry alone'.
He added: 'It is a journey we make together.
'To all involved in sport – to coaches, teammates, mentors – thank you for the joy you helped nurture in these children.
'Their bright spirits will remain a part of every game played in their memory.
'And we take a moment to thank all first responders and medics. Thank you for your service under unimaginable circumstances.
'Thank you to all who have come forward with meals, hugs, tears, prayers, practical and pastoral support or a silent presence.
'You remind us that light still flickers, even on the darkest of days.'
Candles were then lit in memory of the three victims.
The bodies will be taken to Barefield in Co Clare, where Ms Whyte was originally from, ahead of their funeral Mass on Saturday.
The three will then be buried together in Templemaley Cemetery.

Man charged with murder of Saudi student who was stabbed in Cambridge

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a student from Saudi Arabia who was stabbed to death while on a 10-week placement in Cambridge. Police were called to Mill Park at 11.27pm on Friday following reports of violence. Mohammed Algasim, from Saudi Arabia, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12.01am on Saturday despite the best efforts of paramedics, Cambridgeshire Police said. The street, near to Cambridge railway station, consists largely of apartment blocks, and floral tributes had been left on the pavement outside one of these buildings. A message, on a piece of paper taped to a barrier behind the tributes, said 'may your soul be at peace' and had heart shapes drawn on it. It also said 'inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un', which is an Arabic phrase meaning 'to God we belong and to Him we return'. Police said that 20-year-old Mr Algasim had been on a 10-week placement studying in Cambridge. EF International Language Campuses Cambridge, a private school offering English language courses to overseas students, said it was 'deeply saddened' to confirm one of its adult students had died. Cambridgeshire Police said on Monday that it is believed Mr Algasim was 'stabbed in an unprovoked attack'. A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Tuesday. The force said that Chas Corrigan, of Holbrook Road, Cambridge, has been charged with murder and possession of a knife in a public place. The 21-year-old appeared before Peterborough Magistrates' Court on Monday and is due to appear before Cambridge Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday. A 50-year-old man, also from Cambridge, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. He remains in custody.

Dramatic arrest in disappearance of two young siblings who vanished in 2014 'after mom dropped them off'

A mother has been reindicted on murder charges over the disappearance of two young siblings 11 years ago. Catherine Hoggle, 38, was the last person seen with her children Jacob, 2, and Sarah, 3, before they went missing in Maryland in September 2014. She told investigators that she dropped the youngsters off at daycare or left them with friends, but Sarah and Jacob were never found. Hoggle was initially charged in the children's deaths years ago, but the case was delayed after she was found to incompetent to stand trial. She was committed to a psychiatric facility and finally released just last month. Prosecutors have now reindicted her, with Hoggle now facing two counts of first-degree murder. She was arrested and has been held in custody in Montgomery County since last Friday. Hoggle is scheduled to appear in court today at 1:30pm but her lawyer still claims she is not fit to stand trial. Her defense attorney told Fox News that he plans to challenge both her detention and the indictment. 'Ms. Hoggle was held for eight years having been judicially determined to be incompetent. Every doctor found that, every doctor agreed with that. Nothing's changed,' her lawyer David Felsen told the news outlet.

The chilling warning sign that something was VERY wrong before a mother-of-six was killed by her husband in murder-suicide - and why cops were powerless to stop it

A mother-of-six who was killed by her husband in a suspected murder-suicide had been been the victim of a domestic violence incident just a few months ago. The bodies of Shafeeqa Husseini, 41, and husband Mirza Husseini, 47, were discovered inside a home in Bordertown, South Australia, just after 11pm on Sunday night during a welfare check. SA Police confirmed they were aware of the couple following a domestic violence incident earlier this year, however, there were not any court orders in effect for the woman's safety. Officers arrived to the couple's Melvyn Street home after a family member called asking them to conduct a welfare check. The couple have six children who were not at home at the time and whose lives have now been thrown into disarray by the tragedy. The Bordertown Islamic Community Centre manager Adeel Khan told the Advertiser the local community had been devastated by the tragedy. 'It is really sad news... whatever has happened is not good, it's a massive shock,' he said. He added Ms Husseini was a good cook and always helped catering for community events. 'It's a small community, everyone knows each other... so we will be missing these guys,' Mr Khan said. Neighbours believed the family immigrated from Afghanistan about 15 years ago, with some family members understood to be working at the local meatworks. South Australian Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Cath Hillard said there were no court-imposed restrictions prohibiting contact between the couple. However, the man was known to have previously commit an act of domestic violence against his wife earlier in the year. Assistant Commissioner Milliard confirmed the couple had children, none of whom were present in the home when the murder-suicide occurred. She said a loved one had been in couple with Mr and Ms Husseini during the day before requesting police visit the home. Bordertown lies about 270km east of Adelaide in the Limestone Coast region. A report will be prepared for the Coroner. Anyone with relevant information was urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
