New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is finally set to get his hands on an English soccer team. Premier League side Crystal Palace announced on Monday that Johnson has signed a legally binding contract to buy the shares of fellow American John Textor, who has a 43 percent stake in the London club.
Reports have placed the price between $220 million and $260 million. 'While the completion is pending approval from the Premier League and Women's Super League, we do not envisage any issues and look forward to welcoming Woody as a partner and director of the club,' Palace said in a statement. 'We would like to go on record to thank John Textor for his contribution over the past four years and wish him every success for the future.'
Johnson submitted a bid to buy Chelsea in 2022 but was unsuccessful. The sale of Textor's shares boosts Palace's hopes of playing in the Europa League next season, having qualified thanks to its FA Cup final victory over Manchester City last month. Textor is also a shareholder in French side Lyon, which is set to enter the same competition, and under UEFA multi-club ownership rules it looked as if Palace could miss out.

UK Plans to Increase Control over Google in search

Britain's competition regulator on Tuesday said it was proposing to designate Google with "strategic market status" to give it greater control over how the US tech giant operates search services. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said steps it could take included making it easier for users to access different search providers and ensuring fair ranking principles for businesses appearing on Google search, Reuters reported. It also proposed more transparency and control for publishers whose content appeared in search results if it goes ahead with the designation in October. Google will be the first company designated since the regulator gained new powers this year. Google said the move could have significant implications for businesses and consumers in Britain. "We're concerned that the scope of the CMA's considerations remains broad and unfocused, with a range of interventions being considered before any evidence has been provided," said Oliver Bethell, Google's senior director for competition.

'Welcome to Wrexham' Poster Boy Paul Mullin Leaves Club on a Season-Long Loan Deal

Paul Mullin, the poster boy of a Wrexham team soaring through England's soccer leagues following its takeover by Hollywood celebrities, has left the club to join third-tier Wigan on a season-long loan deal. 'I'm excited for the next part of my story,' Mullin told Wigan's official website on Monday. 'I've scored a lot of goals over the last few years, but more than anything I give my absolute all for the club that I'm playing for, and I'm going to do that again with Wigan.' Wigan said the loan deal was subject to the approval of the English Football League and the Football Association and international clearance. Mullin helped Wrexham become the first team in the history of English football's top five divisions to secure three successive promotions, and there is a giant mural of the 30-year-old striker in the center of the city. He formed such a close bond with Ryan Reynolds, one of the club's owners, that he even appeared in the last Deadpool movie. But Mullin, who had been Wrexham's player of the season in each of the three previous years, was only a bit-part performer when the team won promotion to the second tier last season. It was a sudden turn of events for a player who has had a leading role in the popular Welcome to Wrexham fly-on-the-wall documentary created by Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to follow their progress as rookie soccer club owners. McElhenney once hailed Mullin as 'one of the greatest football players in the world.' Mullin has scored 110 goals in 172 games for Wrexham.
