Marriyum inaugurates ‘CM Punjab Green Credit Programme'
She also visited an exhibition of environmental paintings by children, interacted with them, and appreciated their creative efforts. The event concluded with Marriyum Aurangzeb distributing cash prizes among the Green Guardians for their exemplary environmental services and commending their dedication.
The programme includes 31 sectors eligible for Green Credits, such as the purchase and use of energy-efficient fans, lights, e-bikes, e-rickshaws, rooftop gardening, tree plantation, cycling, and e-charging solutions. Media houses, schools, hospitals, and industrial units are also actively being included to ensure the message reaches every segment of society.
The Minister emphasized that this programme belongs not just to the government but to every citizen. She stressed that real change will only come when collective thinking and behaviour shift toward environmental responsibility. While this is currently a pilot project, a dedicated budget will be allocated for its expansion in the upcoming Annual Development Programme (ADP). She appealed to the public to actively participate in this national cause and prioritize environmental conservation in their daily lives.
The event was attended by representatives from various departments, environmental activists, and students from educational institutions, media personnel, and Green Guardians.
In her address, Marriyum Aurangzeb shed light on the challenges posed by climate change, government policies, and the initiatives being taken for environmental sustainability. She stated that in the past, climate change was considered an unusual or irrelevant issue, but it has now become a reality directly affecting human life, agriculture, health, and the economy.
She informed the audience that as soon as Chief Minister Marriyum Nawaz Sharif took oath, she initiated multi-sectoral efforts to tackle air pollution. Punjab's first climate change policy was introduced and is now being actively implemented. Changes in monsoon patterns have brought about significant shifts in the agricultural system, turning environmental challenges into everyday concerns.
Aurangzeb highlighted that for the past one and a half years, the government has been enforcing a comprehensive Anti-Smog Plan across various sectors. Additionally, the first multi-sectoral Environmental Force has been established and is operational 24/7. A dedicated budget of Rs10 billion has been allocated to combat smog, while 42 advanced Air Quality Index (AQI) monitors have been installed across Punjab to continuously track air quality. Drone surveillance is also being used to detect environmental violations.
In the agricultural sector, the government is promoting e-mechanization by providing super seeders to farmers at a 60 percent subsidy to discourage the burning of crop residues. Under the Green Credit Programme, citizens will receive incentive credits for engaging in eco-friendly activities, aiming to bring positive behavioural change. So far, 90 industrial units have been taken onboard and are receiving continuous guidance.
She further announced that each e-bike user will earn five carbon credits along with financial support of Rs50,000 to encourage the adoption of environment-friendly transport. The Punjab government plans to distribute 150,000 e-bikes in the next phase, which will reduce pollution and help citizens save on daily commuting costs. In addition, 500 electric buses will be added to Punjab's transport system starting August 2025.

Talks resumed in the morning and led to a consensus on a de-escalated path forward. Punjab's Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb led the government's negotiation team, which included Law Minister Sohaib Bharth and Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique. Representing JI were Deputy Emir Liaqat Baloch, Secretary General Ameerul Azeem, and Maulana Hidayatur Rehman Baloch, who is leading the march. The senior minister described the two days of negotiations as "constructive and sincere," praising Jamaat-e-Islami for its peaceful and responsible conduct. She confirmed that the protesters would now demonstrate at the Lahore Press Club, where they would highlight their demands in a lawful and dignified manner. "Punjab government will extend full hospitality to our Baloch brothers," she said. "Their protection and dignity are our constitutional and moral responsibility."

Panels formed to address issues facing gas sector
ISLAMABAD: The government has established four specialised panels to address key issues in the gas sector, including circular debt, LNG tariffs, unaccounted-for gas (UFG) losses, and the increasing share of LNG in the national gas system, official sources told Business Recorder. According to sources, a Committee on Implementing Structural Reforms in the Petroleum Sector— formed by the Prime Minister and chaired by the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources— has convened multiple meetings to deliberate on these matters. The composition of the Committee is as following: Minister for Petroleum (Convener), Advisor to Prime Minister on Privatisation, National Coordinator on Energy Reforms, Lt General Muhammad Zafar Iqbal (retd) Secretary, Power Division, Secretary, Petroleum Division, Secretary, Cabinet Division/ representative and Chairman, OGRA. Pakistan faces LNG glut: minister The Minister for Petroleum emphasised that while the foundational work for the committee's assignment had been done through its Integrated Energy Study (Woodmac) conducted by the Petroleum Division, the present focus is to chalk out an implementation plan. He highlighted the importance of aligning the Committee's recommendations with the preparation of the Annual Delivery Plan (ADP) to be settled with LNG suppliers. The representative of Power Division commented that challenges need to be addressed and disruptions need to be looked into. The Chair responded that the tactical issues would be discussed later and, presently, the focus needs to be on sustainability of the gas sector and how LNG over supply/ less off-take is affecting it. The Secretary Petroleum framed the key issues to be addressed by the Committee, namely: rationalisation of gas tariffs (for both indigenous and imported gas), synchronisation of LNG demand with the power sector along with resolution of circular debt within the gas sector. He noted that most of the required data and foundational analysis is already available through the Woodmac study and will serve as the basis for the committee's deliberations. The Chair commented that Committee should focus on implementation as a Plan. The Committee needs to focus on 2026 ADP's preparation and to devised policy of Integrated Energy strategy for Pakistan. The Committee constituted a sub-committee comprising Secretary Power (Lead), DG Gas, MD SNGPL and a nominee from the Task Force. The chair can co-opt any member if he/she deems it necessary to effectively carry out the work and decided to constitute the following (ToRs) for the four sub-committees: Subcommittee 1: work out a comprehensive proposal to synchronise LNG demand of the power sector in a manner that ensures timely and adequate supply without causing abrupt fluctuations in demand. GCEP submission to Woodmac to be considered; and identify causes and propose solutions to avoid sudden changes in LNG requirements by the power sector that lead to diversion of LNG cargo to other sectors. Net Proceeds Differential (NDP) claims, if any, arising due to reduced off-take by Power Division to be considered. Sub-Committee -2 comprising Muhammad Ali (Lead), a nominee of KPMG, Islamabad and any co-opted member to formulate proposals to deal with circular debt stock in the gas sector. Sub-Committee 3 is on LNG tariff rationalisation. Its scope will formulate proposals for LNG tariff rationalisation by revisiting all compositions of tariff (terminal charges, importer margins and LNG service agreement charges etc.) RLNG demand maximization options to be proposed (especially in domestic sector). Sub-Committee 4- domestic gas tariff efficiency and transparency will address efficiency and transparency in tariff for domestic gas tariff including revenue requirements of the gas utilities, actual UFG losses taking into account growing LNG share in gas system, etc. Sui Companies Return on Assets formula revision to be considered to bring better efficiencies. Lahore's limits: CM directs grand operation to protect passenger aircrafts
Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed the authorities concerned to launch a grand operation to protect passenger aircrafts within Lahore's limits, and mobilized District Administration, Wildlife and Environment Protection Authority for the purpose. She directed the Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb to mobilize Punjab's first Wildlife Force, and decided to dismantle illegal slaughterhouses and poultry farms near airports. She also directed the relevant authorities to strictly implement laws and regulations for garbage disposal of bakeries near airports, and said, 'There will be a ban on doing any kind of business near airports that may create a risk of birds gathering.' In this regard; Punjab government has issued an order, which says, 'Poultry farms, bakeries and slaughterhouses established without environmental protection arrangements will be banned.' The notification added, 'Strict application of environmental regulations will be ensured for companies that manufacture leather and leather products, besides a ban on open skinning of animal hides. Moreover, there will be a complete ban on throwing garbage near airports, making the use of lidded garbage bins mandatory.' Wildlife Headquarters has also issued an order directing Wildlife Rangers to start operations immediately. The CM said, 'Lahore Eastern Bypass, Manawan Hospital Dahoriwala, PKLI, Chungi Amar Sidhu, Ichhra Lal, and Chah Miran areas have been declared 'No-Bird Zone,' operation will start from these areas. The notification of Punjab government says, 'All such reasons should be eliminated due to which flocks of birds gather near airports.' It adds, 'Grain on the roofs of houses, pigeon breeding, pigeon flying in large numbers, feeding of pigeons in temples and public places and excessive gathering of birds should be prevented.' The notification highlights, 'Wildlife Rangers, district administration and related agencies will take action as per Punjab Wildlife Act in case of violation.' The notification says, 'Bird collisions with aircraft during take-off, landing and low-altitude flight of aircraft cause accidents.' It points out, 'According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), more than 90% of accidents occur at altitudes below 3,000 feet.' The notification emphasised, 'Punjab Wildlife Act should be strictly implemented, arrests, punishments and fines will be imposed for violations.' Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said, 'These measures are being taken to ensure safe air travel and safety of hundreds of human lives.'
