China basketball team ‘earn respect' against Koreans, reach first Asia Cup semi in decade

China will take on New Zealand in basketball's Fiba Asia Cup semi-finals in Saudi Arabia on Saturday after a victory over South Korea that coach Guo Shiqiang said had earned his team some respect.
A 79-71 win on Thursday at Jeddah's King Abdullah Sports City set up a Saturday evening clash with the Tall Blacks, who overcame a 22-point deficit to send Lebanon packing with a 90-86 win.
Chinese fans celebrated a hard-fought victory featuring a series of controversial calls, as their country reached the last four for the first time since 2015.
In a match that China led by as many as 18 points midway through the third quarter, social media attention turned to the 17 free throws awarded to the Koreans within a six-minute, 44-second span during the quarter.
The Koreans sank 15 to keep themselves in the game. China were awarded two free throws in those 10 minutes, but Liao Sanning, who finished with four points, missed both.

While 'you had 17 free throws, but you still couldn't win' was among the most popular comments, others questioned the officiating.

World Games end in Chengdu with colourful ceremony, China top of medals table

China brought down the curtain on the 12th World Games on Sunday as a colourful closing ceremony concluded 10 action-packed days in Chengdu. The four-yearly jamboree – comprising disciplines not included in the Olympics – had drawn 5,000 athletes from 110 countries and regions to the southwest Chinese city to compete in 34 sports ranging from familiar Games fare to the likes of powerboating and cheerleading. Sunday night's ceremony began at 8pm local time and took place at the International Horticultural Exhibition Park, exemplifying the event's commitment to sustainability. It featured a gala performance showcasing four acts of Chinese dance, highlighting the unique cultural inclusiveness of the Ba-Shu region, of which Chengdu is a part. After the last of the 256 events on Sunday, China finished top of the medals table with 36 golds, 17 silvers and 11 bronzes – their best-ever showing – ahead of Germany with 17, 14 and 14 respectively, while Ukraine were third on 16-14-14. World Games: Hong Kong drone racer Kwan Chun-yan wins silver to help city to best showing

Air sports exponent Kwan Chun-yan finished between two world champions in the sport to win Hong Kong's sixth and final medal at the World Games in Chengdu, in a performance described by the team chief as 'calm and composed'. Kwan's silver in the drone racing final on Saturday helped Hong Kong to their best performance at the multi-sport event, with three golds, two silvers and one bronze in Chengdu, through wushu (two golds, one silver), karate (one gold), air sports (one silver), and waterski and wakeboard (one bronze). The previous best result was five medals – one gold and four bronze – at the 2022 Games in Birmingham, Alabama, in the US. Kwan, 17, competed in an arduous series of nine races over two days, including three in the final on Saturday, to finish second behind Japan's Yuki Hashimoto, the current world champion. Hashimoto won two out of the three races in the final with a total time of one minute 28.337 seconds, while Kwan finished with a time of 1:30.889. Skier Eileen Gu injured in ‘very terrible accident' while training

Freestyle skier Eileen Gu said on Saturday that she suffered an injury following a 'very terrible accident' while training in New Zealand. Gu, who only resumed training last month after hurting herself at the Winter X Games in January, was training at the Cardrona Alpine Resort before the incident happened on Friday. Gu posted on Weibo 24 hours later detailing the incident and said she had flown to Christchurch early on Saturday for medical imaging, which would reveal the extent of the injury she had suffered. 'Unfortunately, a very terrible accident occurred yesterday due to human error,' she said. 'Hopefully I'll be back on the snow soon, but I'm still waiting for final confirmation from the expert team.' Eyewitnesses said Gu appeared to be seriously injured and needed to be taken to the hospital on a stretcher. The two-time Olympic champion expressed gratitude to her friends for their support and enthusiasm both on and off the snow – and called for understanding from her supporters.
