Consecration of temple on DD Health's office premises in Madurai draws flak
As against the rules of the Government of Tamil Nadu, a religious event subsequent to the construction of a temple-like structure was conducted on the office premises of Deputy Director of Health Services in Madurai on Thursday and Friday.
An invitation which was allegedly released by the district health services office mentions that as a temple belonging to a particular religion was being raised on the office premises, the office staff and others were invited to attend the consecrating event and homam during 6 p.m to 9 p.m on June 5 and from 9 a.m to 1 p.m on June 6, said sources.
Anand Raj, a social activist based in Madurai, said that a district health office was a place where people of all religions visit for health-related reasons.
As per several Tamil Nadu government rules and Madras High Court orders, conducting of such religious events in a government office, not confined to any particular religion, was against the rules of the State, he added.
Particularly, Government Order No. 426, Personnel and Administrative Reforms (Per-A) Department, dated 13.12.1993, prohibited the construction of any new structure for religious worship within the office campus, or enlargement or modification of any existing structure for similar purpose, Mr. Anand Raj stated.
Further, he said that the order stressed that, 'It restricted the practice of worship of different faiths in office premises by government staff.'
Point 3 of the G.O. pointed out that: 'In view of the direction of the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court all Heads of Departments are requested to follow the above instructions scrupulously and it is the responsibility of the Head of Department/Head of Office to ensure that the prohibition made under the said G.O. is implemented in letter and spirit. The Heads of departments are also requested to instruct all the sub-ordinate offices under their control to follow the instructions issued in G.O. Ms. No. 426, Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department, without fail.'
Citing the instructions of the order, Mr. Anand Raj said that while it was the duty of higher officials to ensure such events do not take place, it is learned that Director of Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Madurai Deputy Director of Health Services have headed and took part in the event.
'When the State government espouses or follows the principle of secularism, such religious events in government offices should be prevented and strict action should be taken against those who disrespect the orders,' he stated.
A health official, who did not want to be named said, the invitation for the event was shared with the doctors, staff and officials though a What's App group.
Madurai district Collector M.S. Sangeetha said that she did not receive any information about such an event.
'I will look into it and take necessary action,' she added.

Amidst reports regarding a spike in Covid-19 cases across the country, the Odisha government has intensified its monitoring and containment measures to ensure public health safety across the state, said an official here on Friday. Referring to latest data released by the Health Department, a statement noted that a total of 755 samples have been tested in Odisha as of June 6, 2025. Of these, 38 samples have returned positive, with 9 individuals already recovered. The remaining 29 patients are in home isolation and reported to be stable. To align state-level strategies with national preparedness, the government of Odisha participated in a high-level virtual review meeting held on June 3, 2025, chaired by Dr. Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW), Government of India. The meeting included representatives from ICMR institutions, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), State Surveillance Units, and various state health authorities. Following the meeting, the Union Health Ministry released a detailed press note noting that India currently has 4,302 active Covid-19 cases, with 864 new cases reported in the past 24 hours. Most of these cases are mild and are being managed at home. Since January 1, 2025, there have been 44 reported Covid-19-related deaths, mainly among individuals with comorbidities. 'Healthcare systems have been directed to ensure adequate oxygen supply, availability of ventilators, isolation beds, and essential medicines. Mock drills to test oxygen infrastructure and hospital-level readiness were conducted on June 2 and further planned for June 4–5. Surveillance of ILI and SARI cases has been intensified, and positive samples are being sent for Whole Genome Sequencing. The public has been advised to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour, including hand hygiene, cough etiquette, self-monitoring, and avoiding crowded spaces when symptomatic,' reads the statement. The Odisha government has reiterated its commitment to strictly implementing all precautionary measures and guidelines issued by the Centre, aiming to minimize the impact of the current Covid-19 surge and protect public health. The state government has requested people to remain vigilant, avoid panic, and rely only on verified sources such as the MoH&FW website and official bulletins for accurate information.

Retired judge M.S. Janarthanam passes away at 89
Retired Madras High Court judge and former chairman of the State Backward Classes Commission, Justice M.S. Janarthanam, passed away on Friday (June 6, 2025). He was 89. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that the funeral of Justice Janarthanam, who had also served as president of the Tamil Nadu State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, would be held with police honours, in recognition of his contributions to social justice. In his condolence message, Mr. Stalin recalled that Justice Janarthanam served as a judge of the Madras High Court from 1988 to 1998, during which he delivered several landmark judgments. He also served as chairman of the State Backward Classes Commission from 2006 to 2015. 'It was on the basis of his recommendations that reservations were implemented for Muslims, Christians, and Arundhathiyars in Tamil Nadu. He carved a niche for himself in the history of social justice. The demise of Justice M.S. Janarthanam is an irreparable loss to the cause of social justice,' Mr. Stalin said. 'Shining example' In his condolence message, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss said that Justice Janarthanam had recommended a 10.5% reservation for Vanniyars, and described him as a shining example of how a chairman of the Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Commission should perform.

Hindu Munnani moves High Court seeking grant of permission for setting up temporary miniatures of Lord Murugan's six abodes
Hindu Munnani has moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the authorities concerned to grant permission for setting up temporary miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Murugan at 'Muruga Bakthargalin Aanmeega Maanadu' scheduled be held in Madurai. Justice B. Pugalendhi directed the Madurai City Police to file a counter affidavit. The court was hearing the petition filed by Hindu Munnani's State Secretary S. Muthukumar of Madurai. The petitioner said Hindu Munnani had decided to arrange a gathering of devotees of Lord Murugan on June 22 for the event in Amma Thidal near Pandi Kovil Ring Road. Miniatures of Arupadai Veedugal will be installed, pujas will be performed and prasadam will be distributed to the devotees, he said, adding that sthalapuranam of the six abodes will be displayed. Apart from this, the devotees will be chanting Kanda Shashti Kavacham and Thiruppugazh at the conference. Spiritual and cultural programmes will be held. The place of gathering was a private land and the land owner had given his consent, he said. A representation was made to the Madurai City Police seeking permission to use sound amplifiers during the event. There was no response from the police. The police have been regularly granting permission for using sound amplifiers in Amma Thidal for public meetings. A representation was also made for arranging darshan of the miniatures from June 10 to June 22. The police rejected permission for usage of microphone sets and to set up miniatures and temporary models, the petitioner said. He alleged that the police team came to the place where the miniatures were being made and threatened the workers and volunteers asking them not proceed with the making of the miniatures. The petitioner sought a direction to the police to grant permission to set up the miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Murugan at the venue and conduct the pujas. The court posted the matter for hearing on June 9.
