What is the etiquette around calling someone out of the blue?
Modern communication is always changing, and while it might have been normal for our parents to just pick up the phone to call someone, these days it can feel stressful or strange for both the caller and the receiver.
We asked two communications experts for their take on calling someone out of the blue.
If you ask Anna Musson, an etiquette expert from Tarndanya lands/Adelaide, calling someone out of the blue is the modern-day equivalent of dropping in on someone unannounced.
"But context is key," she adds.
"If it's grandma and she loves it, that's fantastic."
But "If it's a teenager or a friend of yours who you know does not like to receive calls," that's a different thing.
Dr Naomi Smith, a digital sociologist at the University of the Sunshine Coast/Kabi Kabi land, says she is often struck by "horror" when her phone rings unexpectedly.
"It feels very pressing, the demand of a phone call," she says.
"You have to deal with it right then and there and give it your attention in the moment, in the same way you would if someone popped over unannounced."
She says most people increasingly "like to have communication on their own terms and in their own time".
"We like a bit of a heads up before someone calls so we can prepare ourselves mentally for the phone call that's going to take place."
Our experts say a rise of scam calls, anxiety around communication and a preference for written communication, is giving rise to a phenomenon known as "telephobia".
Telephobia is the fear of or reluctance to make or take phone calls. It's considered a type of social phobia or social anxiety.
"I think there's a sense of risk around answering a phone call now," Dr Smith says.
"We all know that numbers can be spoofed and every time someone calls me up, out of the blue, it seems to be someone wanting something from me or trying to scam me."
Ms Musson says younger generations are typically more likely to experience telephobia.
"We're talking about Gen Zs and below, even a lot of millennials, they really prefer being able to control the method by which we're speaking to them, and they prefer text.
"They would even prefer a video chat over a phone call because it's just the way that they were raised."
Ms Musson says we all need to have the ability to speak over the phone, both in our personal and professional lives.
"It is actually a life skill, and there are instances when a phone call is appropriate," she says.
"For example, if someone has passed away, think about what is going to be the most appropriate way to connect and show that you care?
"And if it is someone who you know would rather a text, that's fine, but in many instances a phone call is appropriate if you're checking if someone is doing ok.
"Or let's say you need to call the bank to verify your identity.
"Remembering the person on the other end of the line wants to get a good solution too, so put a smile on your voice, make sure that you're clear with your communication."
Dr Smith says a quick text prior is thoughtful, depending on who you're wanting to call.
"I wouldn't text my mum and say, 'hey, I'm going to call you now', I think she would find that very strange," she says.
"But some of my friends who I know are a bit phone shy, I would text them and say, 'hey, I want to have a quick chat, it's nothing serious, I just want to hear your voice'.
"So they're just like, 'oh, she's just calling to say hi and hear the latest' and it's going to be a light, easy conversation."
Ms Musson says these personal interactions are important for everyday life.
"These human contacts are crucial, and we've got to look after each other's our own and each other's mental health," she says.
"So don't shrink back, don't hold back from picking up the phone and making those phone calls.
"If that means a text prior then definitely do it."

Record-breaking family newspaper dynasty's 150-year milestone
For 150 years, The Buloke Times has rolled off the press in Donald, a small town of 1,500 in regional Victoria. And for that entire time, it's been run by one devoted family. Now aged 95, editor Robin Letts has been at the helm of the newspaper for more than half that history. "Robin has been here 76 years," said Quill McQuilty, a journalist with The Buloke Times. "That's half, over half [the newspaper's history] that he's been involved in this paper. "That's just amazing." "Running a bi-weekly newspaper, it's seven days a week," Robin Letts said. His busy week involves deciding on each edition's content, proofreading pages prior to publication and writing the odd editorial. Though he admits his age is catching up. The Buloke Times masthead arose when council amalgamations in the mid-1990s formed the Buloke Shire, which the paper mostly serves. The paper began as The Donald Times in 1875, founded by the entrepreneurial Godfrey Morgan. In 1852, aged 18, Mr Morgan arrived in Australia from England with a letter of introduction from literary great Charles Dickens to report on the gold rush. Robin's son David Letts is the newspaper's general manager — a somewhat inadequate job description. He's also the principal printer, typesetter, sometime photographer and journalist. On its twice-weekly publication day he's also the principal paper boy, delivering the freshly printed newspaper to the Wimmera region's towns of Donald, St Arnaud, Wycheproof, Watchem, Birchip and Charlton. For The Buloke Times staff, like in all small newspapers, versatility is essential. "Anyone could be called to grab a camera and go out and take a photo or do a couple of paragraphs or hunt someone down to identify a photograph," David Letts said. Family involvement has been pivotal to the newspaper's survival and newsprint runs deep in the family's DNA. In 1922 the Morgan family appointed G.W.L. "Goff" Letts, Robin's father, as editor. David Letts said working alongside both his father and grandfather was special. "It was a lot of fun to have the three of us here and then grandpa or Goff, when he passed away, then of course Robin took over the editorship," he said. "It chalked up a lot of years as editor between the two of them." Robin Letts's newspaper career began in 1947 at age 17. Initially focused on sports reporting, he soon covered all the essential topics of a good local newspaper, namely news, sport and opinion pieces. "With a pen in his hand he was a giant," said former employee Brian Bayles. "Mind you I don't think he has ever lifted the bonnet of a car and wouldn't have the faintest idea of how to change a tyre, but put a pen in his hand and he was very much above average," Mr Bayles said. Robin Letts's unwavering passion, energy and commitment to the newspaper continues to astound everybody. "He runs circles around us. It's just amazing at his age to still be so driven and dedicated to his job," colleague Ms McQuilty said. The newspaper this week celebrated its 150th anniversary with a commemorative edition for its readers and a birthday cake for its staff. The Letts family's 150 years of continuous family ownership now eclipses that of the famous Fairfax family who bought into the then Sydney Herald, now The Sydney Morning Herald, in 1841, but lost ownership in 1990. However, in its milestone year the Letts family's unbroken century and a half proprietorship of the newspaper will also end. David Letts, who started at the paper after trade school in 1980 and has spent his entire working life at The Buloke Times, plans to retire. "They've all got their own careers and everything else." Robin Letts will continue as editor, and there are discussions about who will take over The Buloke Times. "His father kept going until the end and I think Robin will just keep going," David Letts said. "It's great for him because it keeps his mind active." The ever modest Robin Letts protests that his role in the paper's ongoing success is overstated. "And ones that we've had through the years. Absolutely wonderful people." 'The sky's the limit': Re-awakening Indigenous languages that have been 'actively suppressed'
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that this story contains images and voices of people who have died. Mikayla Helms remembers driving 1,000 kilometres during school holidays to outback New South Wales, where she'd listen to her grandmother tell dreaming stories and call for the rain to come. Raised as a proud Ngiyampaa woman, the Canberra student always treasured her time spent on country in Menindee, in the far west of New South Wales. But it was only when she began a Year 12 school project that she realised she wanted to learn her great-grandmother Aunty Beryl Carmichael's language. "It was quite new to me, I've always been very in touch with my Aboriginal culture but never specifically … my mob," Ms Helms said. For her project, she started making an online dictionary of the Ngiyampaa — a language without any fluent speakers. Two years later, the medical science student is part of a growing number of people working to re-awaken "silenced" First Nations languages. And experts think, when it comes to revitalising languages, there's been a turning of the tide. Ms Helms's learning journey has been helped along by the treasure trove of stories, books and language recordings left behind when Aunty Beryl died in 2024. "It is very special for me and I do feel like I'm keeping her alive," Ms Helms said. "Right now I'm focusing on documenting everything from my nan and her memories. "[I have] a book that she wrote in 1986 and most of the book is just her poetry and stories that she's written, but at the end she's got a bunch of Ngiyampaa words that she's documented." The process has also inspired Ms Helms to help others, like Aunty Beryl did. "She was one of the most important people in my life and she still is … I hope to have as much of an impact on community as she did," she said. "I would like to be a rural doctor and go out to remote communities. Ms Helms's work is crucial because, like many other First Nations languages, the Ngiyampaa dialects are considered under threat. In fact, Australia has one of the highest rates of language loss in the world. At the time of colonisation, there were more than 250 First Nations languages spoken throughout Australia. Since then, more than half of these languages have been "silenced", and about one quarter are only spoken by Elders, according to the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATIS). Just 12 languages are considered relatively strong, and spoken as a first language. "Languages weren't lost, they didn't just disappear out of view — they've been actively suppressed," AITSIS Centre for Australian Languages director Lauren Reed said. Ms Reed said First Nations communities were still being prevented from using their languages through past policies like the Stolen Generation, and due to limited access to translation services. But a positive shift in the number of communities engaging in language learning has experts hopeful the numbers could be turned around. An AIATSIS survey, released later this year, found as many as 60 languages have been "reawakened" over the past five years — previously, that number sat at 31. "Communities are working really hard to bring their languages back into use after generations of being silenced," Ms Reed said. For example, Indigenous languages are being taught in a growing number of pre-schools across the country. In Coffs Harbour, on the NSW mid-north coast, you'll find the state's first bi-lingual school with an Indigenous language, Gumbaynggirr. And in NSW's Central West, the Wiradjuri Condobolin Corporation have produced games, books and a dictionary app in Wiradjuri, Yorta Yorta, Nari Nari and Wamba Wamba languages. "With the right amount of support, with community drive, the sky's the limit for Indigenous communities in terms of reawakening their languages," Ms Reed said. Like Ms Helms, Ngyiampaa woman Lesley Woods is committed to strengthening the Ngiyampaa dialect. She has a linguistics PhD on revitalising languages, and is completing an accessible Ngiyampaa dictionary, relying heavily on old recordings and documentation. "My goal is to get as much spoken language out there from those old recordings, so people can hear the language," Dr Woods said. Dr Woods said individual efforts to learn language, like Ms Helms is doing, were an important means to reconnect with culture and country. "Whatever people can do and in whatever way they want to do it is brilliant and to be applauded," she said. "Undertaking to learn a language … is a lot of hard work." She's hopeful these efforts mean that one day, Ngiyampaa will join the list of languages being learnt back into fluency. "That blows my mind, that you can go from just having a few old speakers to lots of people learning to speak again," Dr Woods said.
