A Jaguar fighter aircraft on Tuesday crashed near Bhanuda village in Rajasthan's Churu district, killing two Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots.
In a post on X, the IAF said: 'An IAF Jaguar Trainer aircraft met with an accident during a routine training mission and crashed near Churu in Rajasthan today. Both pilots sustained fatal injuries in the accident. No damage to any civil property has been reported. IAF deeply regrets the loss of lives and stands firmly with the bereaved families in this time of grief."
When were Jaguar jets inducted? How many does the IAF have?
The SEPECAT Jaguar aircraft were officially inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF) in July 1979. The first squadron to be equipped with Jaguars was No. 14 Squadron, also known as the 'Bulls", based at Ambala Air Force Station.
India initially purchased the Jaguars under the name Shamsher in IAF service.
The aircraft were manufactured under license by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in India.
The IAF currently operates approximately 115 to 120 SEPECAT Jaguar aircraft across six squadrons. However, only about 83 of these are fully operational as of April.
Jaguar jet crashes since March
April 3: Another Jaguar jet crashed in Gujarat's Jamnagar. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Siddharth Yadav, died in the crash that occurred due to a critical technical malfunction in the aircraft. In a remarkable act of bravery before his death, Lieutenant Yadav saved countless lives by steering the crashing aircraft away from a densely populated area. He also ejected his fellow pilot, ensuring his safety before tragically losing his own life.
March 7: An Anglo-French SEPECAT Jaguar ground attack fighter went down near Ambala during a routine sortie. At the time, the pilot was able to eject safely.
Does IAF plan to phase out Jaguar jets?
The IAF too, is expected to begin 'number-plating' or phasing out its older Jaguar models after 2027-28 onwards, but amid delays in acquiring the HAL Tejas Mk2, Rafale, and MRFA (Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft), it is left with little choice but to extend the life of these outdated planes.
Do other countries fly Jaguar jets?
Countries like Britain, France, Ecuador, Nigeria and Oman, which once had Jaguars in their fleet, have retired them long ago, with some jets put on display in air museums.

IGNOU french language admission 2025 open for MAFL and CFL at Ranchi centre
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has opened admissions for its French language programs at the Ranchi Regional Centre. The programs offered are the Master of Arts in French (MAFL) and the Certificate in French Language (CFL). Candidates applying for MAFL program must meet one of the following eligibility conditions: They should have completed a three-year undergraduate degree in French from a recognised Indian or foreign university; or hold any undergraduate degree with at least four semesters (two years) of French as a major subject at the undergraduate level along with a diploma in French at the B1 level; or possess any undergraduate degree along with a three-year UGC-prescribed advanced diploma in French (Level B2) obtained from a recognised university or certified institution as per university regulations. A colourful torchlight procession marks the eve of Bastille Day
Y A colourful torchlight procession, headed by a music band, and featuring lanterns wrapped in colours of the national flags of France and India, marched down the Promenade Beach on Sunday on the eve of Bastille Day in connection with the celebration of French National Day on July 14 (Monday). The symbolic night march, that began in front of the Dupleix Statue and ended near the building of the French Consulate on Goubert Avenue, was to signify the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, a defining point in the French Revolution. The procession was launched in the presence of Etienne Rolland-Piègue, Consul General of France in Pondicherry and Chennai, who will also lead the Bastille Day ceremonies on Monday. Members of the French expat community in the city, representatives of war veterans associations, youth and tourists joined the procession. The event was organised under the auspices of 'Le Souvenir Francaise' (The Souvenir Français), an association founded in 1887 with a mission to honour the memory of all those who died for France, whether French or foreign, and to help maintain tombs and monuments. The French Consulate is celebrating the occasion both as a symbol of unity of the French people in forming a republic and its enshrined principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity, as well as a reaffirmation of a strengthening friendship based on shared values between France and India. On July 14, wreaths will be placed at the War Memorials of Puducherry at 8.30 a.m. and Karaikal at 9.30 a.m. The War Memorials will remain open to families for one hour after the official ceremonies for private wreath-laying, the French Consulate said. The presence of this urban wildlife is encouraged by uncollected waste, it had been pointed out. IAF officials communicated several issues regarding this situation to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and recommended immediate and long-term measures to address the concerns through a formal letter. In response, PMC has developed a comprehensive plan, increasing garbage collection from once to thrice a day around the Air Force Station, said Sandeep Kadam, head of the PMC's solid waste management department. "We have also assigned a team to collect garbage at night and maintain daily records of their activities. A nodal officer was designated to oversee the entire operation. Civic teams are now collecting garbage within a 4km radius of the airport," Kadam told TOI. Civic officials claimed that they have adopted a multi-pronged strategy to tackle this issue. "We have roped in a dedicated team of 15 workers to lift garbage daily in three shifts. They clean and sweep the areas in a 4km radius. Private plot owners here have also been told to clean their areas to avoid a penalty," said a PMC official. Localities like Kalwadi vasti, Lohegaon gaothan, Forest Park, and others host hundreds of houses. "Daily collection of dry and wet garbage is about two tonne. It is a massive exercise as our personnel have to collect it from different locations. We have also urged citizens not to throw trash in open areas and dispose of it at designated places only," said Dhanshree Jagdale, divisional sanitary inspector of Nagar Road ward office. Jagdale claimed that they work in tandem with airport authorities and the Air Force Station. "Coordinated efforts are the need of the hour to address this issue completely. We have also increased vehicles for garbage collection and share details daily with IAF and the airport authority. We are working on the recommendations suggested by IAF," she said. Meanwhile, PMC's veterinary department head Sarika Funde told TOI that they have started a sterilisation and vaccination drive for stray dogs in the area over last ten days.
