‘Moving to Pune': Bengaluru entrepreneur Kaushik Mukherjee blames ‘language nonsense' for office shift after SBI Kannada row
A
Bengaluru tech entrepreneur
has announced plans to relocate his company's office to Pune within six months, citing employee concerns about recent language-related incidents in Karnataka. The move follows public debate after a viral video showed a bank manager refusing to speak Kannada in Bengaluru.
Bengaluru tech founder cites employee concerns
Kaushik Mukherjee
, co-founder of a tech firm, posted on X that he had decided to move the office following discussions with his team. "Today I took a decision to wind up our Bangalore office in the next 6 months and move it to Pune. If this language nonsense is to continue, I do not want my non Kannada speaking staff to be the next 'victim'. This idea was mooted by the staff themselves. I agreed to their POV," he wrote.

Mukherjee's post was a direct response to a viral video of a
State Bank of India
(SBI) manager in Chandapura, Bengaluru, who refused to speak Kannada to a customer. In the video, the manager says, "This is India, I'll speak Hindi, not Kannada." The incident sparked criticism across the state.
Political leaders react to SBI incident
Bengaluru South Member of Parliament Tejasvi Surya shared the video on X, writing, "If you are doing customer interface work in Karnataka, especially in a sector like banking, it is important to communicate to customers in the language they know." He also said that he has consistently demanded that public-facing roles in Karnataka be staffed with Kannada-speaking employees.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the incident. He called the manager's conduct "strongly condemnable" and urged the Union Finance Ministry to introduce cultural and language sensitivity training for bank staff across the country.

SBI responds to backlash
Following the backlash, the bank transferred the manager to another branch. Both the bank and the manager issued apologies. The manager also released a statement in Kannada, promising to be more sensitive to customers in the future.
Language debate in public services
The Kannada Development Authority (KDA) has expressed concern over the growing number of non-Kannadigas posted in customer-facing roles in banks. According to the KDA, this trend is leading to a disconnect between local citizens and essential services.
Under Reserve Bank of India guidelines, banks must offer services in English, Hindi, and the regional language. Despite this, incidents like the one in Bengaluru have reignited debates over language use in public-facing institutions in Karnataka.

DMK's general council meeting dynastic drama, diversion tactic: Union Minister Murugan
Chennai: Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L. Murugan launched a scathing attack on the DMK following its general council meeting in Madurai, accusing the party of engaging in dynastic theatrics and diversionary tactics to mask its failures. Calling the meeting a 'coronation event', Murugan alleged that the DMK had convened it primarily to reaffirm that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's son would inherit party leadership. The DMK held its general council meeting on Sunday, where it adopted 27 resolutions. 'It was a political drama to promote the 'prince' and pacify second-tier leaders who act like local feudal lords,' he said. The minister condemned the resolutions passed by the DMK, especially those criticising the Central government, calling them attempts to distract the public from the state government's poor performance and deep-rooted corruption. 'This is classic boogeyman politics -- when there's nothing real to show, invent an enemy,' he said. He accused the DMK of lacking moral standing to speak on caste-based census, education policy, or federalism. 'What did they do when they were part of the UPA government? Nothing. Today, they raise hollow slogans while clinging to Congress, the very party that removed education from the state list,' he added. Murugan also dismissed the DMK's rhetoric on issues like the Waqf Act, Hindi imposition, and Katchatheevu, saying the party was using these topics to deflect attention from corruption investigations. 'If you're innocent, why fear probes by the ED or IT? The law will take its course,' he said. He questioned the credibility of the resolution to declare Karunanidhi's birthday as Classical Tamil Day, arguing it reduced Tamil pride to a family legacy. 'To the DMK, Tamil Nadu is Karunanidhi Nadu,' he remarked. Slamming the party for selective outrage, Murugan noted the DMK's silence on sexual abuse cases in state institutions was selective. He concluded with a strong political message: 'The people of Tamil Nadu are ready for change. In 2026, the AIADMK-BJP alliance will secure a historic victory and end this era of corrupt, dynastic rule.'

"Kamal Haasan's Film Won't Release Without His Apology": Karnataka Film Body
Bengaluru: The row over legendary actor Kamal Haasan's "Kannada is born out of Tamil" remark shows no sign of dying down. A Karnataka film body has now warned that if the actor does not apologise for his remark, his upcoming movie Thug Life won't be released. "If he doesn't apologise, Thug Life won't run Karnataka. This is for sure, this is not about the industry, this is about the state. Even political parties are opposing, pro-Kannada organisations are making it clear that he has to respond. The movie's release is difficult without his apology. Our exhibitors or distributors are not ready to screen it. How can the movie release here?" Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce president M Narasimhalu said. During a promotional event for Thug Life, which stars Mr Haasan, Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan TR, the legendary actor said "Kannada was born out of Tamil". The remark sparked a massive row as politicians cutting across party lines slammed the actor. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said Kannada language has a long history and that Mr Hassan "doesn't know about it. Karnataka BJP chief BY Vijayendra has demanded an apology. "One must love their mother tongue, but flaunting arrogance in its name is a mark of cultural bankruptcy. Especially for artists, it is essential to possess the ethos of respecting every language," he said. The BJP leader said Mr Haasan acted in films of several languages, including Kannada, but his remark shows "blatant arrogance". Several pro-Kannada organisations have hit out at the actor and demanded an apology. The actor has, however, made it clear that he has no plan to apologise. "It is a democracy. I believe in law and justice. My love for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala is true. Nobody will suspect it except for those who have an agenda. I've been threatened earlier too, and if I am wrong, I would apologise, if I'm not, I won't," he has said.
