Bob MacIntyre, after all, had played brilliantly for three days to get himself in a winning position in the BMW Championship and ended up falling short on Sunday. It was by no means the end of the world that he lost out to Scottie Scheffler, the game's dominant force, and finishing runner-up in the $20 million FedEx Cup Play-Off event delivered some big boosts for the Oban man. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad For starters, he's broken into the top ten in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time, having climbed from 16th to eighth, while he is heading into the PGA Tour's season-ending $40 million Tour Championship in Atlanta this week sitting ninth on the FedEx Cup points list. Bob MacIntyre pictured during the final round of the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland | Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images The 29-year-old also secured an automatic spot in Luke Donald's team for next month's Ryder Cup and has done so in style by finishing second on the points list behind Rory McIlroy. All of those will undoubtedly help ease the pain he'll be feeling, but, nonetheless, it was no surprise that he admitted straight after the closing circuit that he was 'p****d off' and wanted to 'go and smash up my golf clubs'. On the back of his two PGA Tour title triumphs last year, MacIntyre is now performing at a level where he feels he can win big tournaments and, of course, came close to landing the US Open at Oakmont earlier this year, finishing second on that occasion as well. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad After also finishing in the top ten in The Open at Royal Portrush, he admitted that a win before the end of the year was one of his top targets and, having spreadeagled the field following the first 54 holes, this was a golden opportunity. MacIntyre had handled playing with Scheffler in Saturday's third round extremely well and felt confident heading into the concluding circuit at Caves Valley Golf Club as he was paired with the double major winner this season once again. Even with a four-shot deficit, it was inevitable that Scheffler would be hard to beat and, after hitting some imperious iron shots from the get go, he effectively sealed his win with an absolutely ridiculous chip-in for a birdie-2 at the 17th. Bob MacIntyre has secured automatic qualification for the Ryder Cup for the second match in a row |What MacIntyre will be disappointed about, though, is the fact his bogey-bogey start set the tone for what was ultimately a grind after he'd been almost free-wheeling over the first three days on a tough track. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad His driving had been superb, wasting no time bending down to pick up the tee after the vast majority of his tee shots, while his putting performance had probably been the best all season. Too many fairways were missed on the last day, though, and it certainly didn't help his cause that a solitary birdie didn't arrive until the par-5 16th, where, incidentally, he wasn't far away from making an albatross. Yes, he was helped by Scheffler making two unexpected sloppy three-putts as his title hopes stayed alive a bit longer than might have been the case. But, at the same time, MacIntyre deserves some credit for not letting his round totally get away from him. MacIntyre did not implode The Bob of two or three years ago would probably have imploded after his start, but nowadays he can dig in when the going gets tough and that is something he can lean on going forward. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad In fairness - and rightly so - the majority of people have reacted positively to MacIntyre's latest strong performance at the highest level in the men's game, though, inevitably, the odd negative comment has been made on social media. It's the same old chestnut about the Scottish psyche and why some people believe it holds back our sportsmen and sportswomen, but, certainly in the case of MacIntyre, that is utter nonsense. He loves nothing more than rolling his sleeves up for a battle and it would be absolutely ridiculous for anyone to suggest that he didn't come out on top on this occasion because he bottled it. Make no mistake, no-one will be more disappointed than MacIntyre himself that he let a four-shot lead slip and ended up finishing two shots behind Scheffler, who, incidentally, signed for a 17th consecutive score in the 60s to secure a fifth win of the season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He'll learn from this experience, though, and please don't let it overshadow the fact he's now a world's top-ten player and can keep climbing those rankings over the next few years. Or let it overshadow that, on the back of being undefeated on his Ryder Cup debut in Rome two years ago, he will be heading into next month's contest as a key player in Luke Donald's team.

Bob MacIntyre suffers PGA agony at $20m BMW Championship as 'machine' mows down four-shot deficit

American cements position as world No 1 with fifth win of season after overturning four-shot overnight lead Sign up to our daily newsletter – Regular news stories and round-ups from around Scotland direct to your inbox Sign up Thank you for signing up! Bob MacIntyre endured an agonising final day in the BMW Championship as his bid to become the first Scot to win a FedEx Cup Play-Off event was thwarted by world No 1 Scottie Scheffler. MacIntyre had started out with a four-shot overnight lead at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills in Maryland but had the wind taken out of his sails by a struggling start in the closing circuit of the $20 million event. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He found himself two shots behind with eight holes to play then again with five to go, though two sloppy three putts from Scheffler at the 12th and 14th kept the door open for MacIntyre. Bob MacIntyre pictured during the final round of the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland |However, the Scot was unable to put some pressure on his title rival when being first to putt for birdie from around six feet at the par-4 15th and, though MacIntyre birdied the par-5 16th to get back to one again, it was effectively game over when Scheffler chipped in for an incredible birdie-2 at the short 17th. Scheffler, winner of both the PGA Championship and The Open this year, signed off with a 67 to finish on 15 under par, winning by two shots from MacIntyre after the 29-year-old closed with a 73. It was Scheffler's fifth win of the season, signing for his 17th consecutive round in the 60s and a 13th top-eight finish in a row equalled a PGA Tour record set in 1973 by Tom Weiskopf. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad MacIntyre reaps rewards of strong display Though he'll be disappointed to miss out on a chance to claim a third PGA Tour title, the strong performance lifted MacIntyre from 20th to ninth heading into next week's Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta. At the same time, MacIntyre cemented his position in the battle for six automatic spots on the European team for the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black on Long Island in New York in September. MacIntyre's handy overnight lead quickly disappeared as the Scot made a shaky start and, as expected, Scheffler wasted no time turning up the heat on his playing partner in the final group. Despite taking a 3-wood, MacIntyre missed the first fairway on the right, came up short with his approach and was unable to get up and down to save par, leading to a two-shot swing straight away as Scheffler knocked his approach to around six feet and opened with a birdie. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad After another missed fairway at the second, MacIntyre then short-sided himself at the side of the second green and, following a bogey there as well, the Oban man's cushion was down to just one shot and that wasn't what he'd been looking for when the man chasing him has been the game's dominant force over the past few years. MacIntyre was unable to convert a good birdie opportunity from around nine feet at the par-3 third, but, with Scheffler three-putting there for a bogey, it was a boost, nonetheless, for the left-hander as he found himself two shots ahead. Both players were unable to birdie the par-5 fourth before MacIntyre pushed a straightforward approach at the sixth, leading to a bogey, which was compounded by Scheffler rolling in a 12-footer for a birdie and, all of a sudden, the pair were tied for the lead. That, of course, would have been hugely disappointing for MacIntyre after the way he'd played over the opening three days to get himself into a great position, but it certainly wasn't the first time that Scheffler had turned around such a deficit. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Scottie Scheffler pictured during the final round of the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland | Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images In last year's Olympics in Paris, for instance, the American had also been four shots behind heading into the closing circuit yet still claimed the gold medal. He's a machine and, following a third birdie of the day from just over five feet at the par-4 seventh, he had moved into the lead in this event. At that point in the round, Scheffler stood at nine under par for the front nine for the week, but, buoyed by the fact he'd played the back nine the better of the two, MacIntyre knew his title bid was still very much alive. It was certainly a boost for him when he made a great up and down from the thick stuff at the left of the green to save par at the eighth, though his task became more difficult when Scheffler moved two ahead following a birdie from close range at the par-4 11th. The world No 1 doesn't make many mistakes, so it was a surprise when he then gave that shot back after a sloppy three-putt from around 25 feet at the 12th, meaning the gap was down to one shot again and MacIntyre knew he'd been handed an unexpected lifeline. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Scheffler opens the door It would have been a massive blow, therefore, when he allowed Scheffler to go two ahead again after misjudging either the club or wind at the par-3 13th, leaving himself a long way from the hole and then being unable to save par from seven-and-a-half feet. Wait a minute, though, because another unexpected Scheffler three putt - this time from 20 feet - at the 14th meant the pair were separated by just one shot again with four holes to play. A brilliant bunker shot from MacIntyre set up a six-foot birdie chance at the 15th, but his frustration was there for all to see as he was unable to take it, especially as Scheffler was just inside him and made no mistake, extending his lead again. Not for long, though. MacIntyre's brilliant second shot at the par-5 16th wasn't far away from landing straight into the hole, but a first birdie of the day for the Scot meant the see-sawing continued as the gap was back to just a shot once more. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Scheffler closes the door A moment of magic, though, from Scheffler as he chipped in for a 2 at the 17th finally killed off MacIntyre's hopes of pulling something out of the bag on a day when he didn't play his best but, once the dust settles, can still take lots of positives from his week's work. In the battle to make the season-ending Tour Championship, Genesis Scottish Open champion Chris Gotterup made it through along with European Ryder Cup contender Harry Hall, but Rickie Fowler just missed out along with Matt Fitzpatrick.

Hibs through to Premier Sports Cup quarter-finals with victory over Livingston

Hibs comfortably qualified for the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup with a 2-0 victory over Livingston at the Set Fare Arena in West Lothian this afternoon. David Gray made six changes to the starting XI from the side that overcame FK Partizan in midweek. Raphael Sallinger and Miguel Chaiwa both made their competitive debuts for the Club whilst Thibault Klidjé making his first start. They were joined by Grant Hanley, Kanayo Megwa, Alasana Manneh on the bench. Jordan Smith, Dylan Levitt, Kieron Bowie, Chris Cadden, Josh Mulligan, and Rocky Bushiri all dropped down to the bench. Jamie McGrath and Joe Newell both missed out due to injury. Former Hibs player Andrew Shinnie was listed amongst the Livingston substitutes. David Martindale made two changes to the side that beat Falkirk last weekend. Daniel Finlayson and Shane Blaney came into the back four and Mo Sylla started in midfield. Danny Wilson and Graham Carey missed out after picking up knocks, while there was no place for on-loan full-back Adam Montgomery. The game kicked off in blistering conditions with Hibs as always taking a huge travelling support along the M8. The players wore their all black third kit. Hibs almost opened the scoring after 30-seconds when Klidjé tried to lob the Livi keeper Jerome Prior from 20-yards but he managed to tip the ball over for a corner. Warren O'Hora than set up Martin Boyle who raced clear down the right but his pass to Klidjé was blocked. Former Hearts' player Ryan McGowan was booked for a late challenge on Klidjé on the left wing. Klidjé was also booked moments later for a challenge on Shane Blaney. Sylla was fortunate not to join them for a tug-back on Josh Campbell and a barge on Klidjé. A third straight foul though on Campbell did result in a well deserved yellow card. In the 25th minute Campbell almost gave Hibs the lead with a powerful half-volley but Prior produced a fine save. At the other end Robbie Muirhead tried an acrobatic effort that flew well wide. Chaiwa tried his luck from distance but his effort was high then Klidjé almost got on the end of a Jordan Obita cross but the danger was cleared. Obita was booked for a pull-back near the half-way line before Manneh had a powerful volley blocked. Just before the break Hibs won a number of corners and from the third Klidjé escaped from his marker and headed home Boyle's corner from the left. After a brief VAR heck for offside the goal was given. Muirhead had an early chance in the second-half but Manneh did well to clear for a corner. On the hour mark Obita and Boyle were replaced by Nicky Cadden and Junior Hoilett. Within seconds of coming on Hoilett should have made it 2-0 after getting on the end of a perfect through ball from the impressive Klidje but he toe poked his effort wide of the post. Campbell was shown a yellow card for a foul on Sylla. Klidjé made way for Elie Youan in the 67th minute and left the field to a huge and well-deserved standing ovation from the travelling fans. Hibs almost doubled their lead when Campbell nearly got on the end of a low cross from Megwa but the ball fell to Cadden whose effort was blocked. Hanley did well to deflect a Samson Lawal shot over the bar as the hosts started to pile on the pressure for the remaining 15-minutes. On the 80th minute Campbell and Manneh ware replaced by Mulligan and Levitt. Jeremy Bokila was booked for a late challenge on Megwa. Chaiwa tried his luck from 30-yards but Prior saved easily. Lawal was then booked for a foul on Chaiwa. With four minutes left Hibs wrapped things up. A Cadden free-kick was cleared into the path of Mulligan who fired a tremendous 25-yard strike into the top right-hand corner of the net. From then Hibs managed the remainder of the game comfortably and now look forward to a quarter-final against Rangers at Ibrox. Livingston: Prior, Finlayson, Blaney, McGowan, Lawal, Sylla, Tait, Pittman, Smith, Muirhead, Winter Subs: Bokila, Hamilton, Wanner, Kabongolo, May, McLennan, Rudden, Shinnie, Yengi Hibs: Sallinger, Iredale, Hanley, O'Hora, Obita, Chaiwa, Manneh, Campbell, Klidjé Boyle Subs: Smitj, Bowie, Bushiri, C Cadden, N Cadden, Hoilett.
