Covington Catholic tennis standouts sweep singles, doubles at KHSAA state championships

Yahoo30-05-2025

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association's boys tennis state tournament again belonged to the Covington Catholic Colonels. A year removed from claiming the doubles title with a runner-up in the singles bracket, the Colonels claimed both titles in 2025.
Kalei Christensen and Alex Yeager, who had won the last two doubles state championships, weren't together for a three-peat, but both took home gold.

Despite his two-time state championship partner now in singles competition, Colonels senior Kalei Christensen still led a doubles team to another state championship.

Paired now with sophomore Blake Hussey, the pairing of Christensen and Hussey dropped just five total sets through the first four rounds of the tournament.
The semifinal rounds began the final day of the state meet. There Christensen and Hussey faced their hardest test yet from Louisville St. Xavier's Jacob Ray and Logan Elliott. The CovCath duo took the match after a pair of 7-5 wins.
Colonel sophomores William Tribble and Jacob Kramer played in the other championship semifinal, but an all-Covington Catholic final was prevented by a 6-4, 6-1 win from Louisville St. Xavier's Aditya Shah and Walker Bush.

In the state finals, Christensen and Hussey grabbed the first set 6-1, but needed a tiebreaker to win set two. Tied 6-6, the Colonels won the tiebreaker 7-1 to take the final set and the state championship 6-1, 7-6(7-1).
Alex Yeager wins KHSAA singles gold
Covington Catholic's Alex Yeager returns a shot by Christian Academy's Landon Ecarma in the boys KHSAA state singles tennis championship at the UK Hilary J. Boone/Downing Tennis Complex in Lexington, Kentucky, on May 29, 2025.
Senior Alex Yeager completed the Covington Catholic sweep and won his third state title after battling through the final three rounds of the state tournament.
Yeager swept his first two matches and won 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. His final three matches would all need a third-set tiebreaker.
The senior won his quarterfinal match over North Oldham's Samuel Gurevich 6-3, 2-6, 12-10 before a 6-2, 4-6, 10-3 win in the semis against Louisville Collegiate's Colby Berson.

Yeager needed to play from behind to win in the state finals.
Christian Academy-Louisville senior Landon Ecarma beat Yeager 6-3 in the opening set and stormed back in set two to tie Yeager 6-6. In the second set tiebreaker, Yeager scored a 7-3 win to send the match to the final set.
Up 11-10, Yeager secured his comeback victory and the singles state championship when Ecarma sent a shot long, giving Yeager a 3-6, 7-6(7-3), 12-10 finals win.

Aaron Judge shares update on home run derby participation

Aaron Judge shares update on home run derby participation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's been the same story for years now. Aaron Judge may be the most prolific home run hitter we've seen in decades, but the New York Yankees slugger is not interested in participating in the Home Run Derby -- unless the event comes to Yankee Stadium. Advertisement Newsday beat writer Erik Boland confirmed Judge's stance on Thursday as All-Star voting began. New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge takes batting practice. Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images 'Same answer,' Judge told Boland when asked if he'd participate in the 2025 Derby. Judge's reluctance isn't new, and it's based on a selfless reason. He won the 2017 Home Run Derby in Miami, but since then, he's chosen to skip the event to focus on staying fresh for the regular season. Following that 2017 Home Run Derby win, Judge acknowledged it exacerbated a shoulder injury he suffered crashing into the wall a few weeks earlier. He needed surgery on the shoulder after the season. Participating in the Derby can add extra wear and tear in the middle of a grueling schedule. For Judge, it's about protecting his body and prioritizing the team's success over personal accolades. Advertisement This decision feeds into his reputation as a no-nonsense player who puts the Yankees first. Remember, in 2023, Judge declined an invite to play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic because it was the first year of his new contract with the Yankees, and he didn't think it would be fair to take away from the team. This year, however, Judge has announced he will captain Team USA in 2026. While fans may wish to see him swing for the fences in the Derby, Judge has not changed his mind. Texas Tech pitcher NiJaree Canady signs new 7-figure softball NIL deal before College World Series Game 3

Pitcher NiJaree Canady signed her second seven-figure NIL deal with Texas Tech, keeping her on campus through her senior season. On Friday, Canady's manager, Derrick Shelby of Prestige Management, told ESPN about her new deal with Texas Tech's Matador Club collective. The Topeka, Kansas, native signed a historic deal in 2024 that included $1 million in direct payments and $50,000 for living expenses after transferring from Stanford. Advertisement The news comes just hours before the Red Raiders face the Texas Longhorns in a deciding Game 3 in the Women's College World Series Friday night. The details of her new deal were not disclosed. "Nija Canady is the most electrifying player in softball. She's box office and she goes out every day and competes," Shelby told ESPN. "The decision to stay at Tech was not difficult. This program has taken care of her. They have showed how much she is appreciated. The entire staff, her teammates, the school in general have been great. Tonight she is playing for a national championship and she is making history. Everything she wants from this game she can get here at Texas Tech." Canady is now in her third straight College World Series after leading Stanford to back-to-back appearances as a Cardinal. She posted a 0.97 ERA during the regular season, and has been a stalwart for the Red Raiders on the mound this WCWS. Advertisement Canady pitched 6 innings (4 hits, 2 earned runs, 7 strikeouts) in Texas Tech's 2-1 loss in Game 1 of the WCWS, and 7 innings (6 hits, 2 earned runs, 6 strikeouts) in Thursday's 4-3 Game 2 win to force Friday's clincher. A national title would be the crown jewel in Canady's decorated career, which includes several All-conference and All-American Honors. Canady also won the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year in 2024.

Comeback victories have been the Pacers' calling card this postseason, and Game 1 of this Thunder vs Pacers series was no different. Indiana was down by 15 in the fourth quarter on Thursday night but rallied to take the win. Tyrese Haliburton hit another clutch shot with just 0.3 seconds remaining, giving the Pacers the 111-110 dub. It was Indiana's only lead of the game. The All-star guard has now made five game-tying or go-ahead shots in the final 30 seconds of the playoffs. 'When it gets to 15, you can panic, or you can talk about, 'How do we get it to 10? How do we get it to five from there?' Haliburton said after the game. 'So, you know, I think all [playoffs], that's what we preached as a group, is when we get down big, let's just find a way to incrementally get it down.' Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 38 points on Thursday night. While the outcome was not what was expected, the 2025 league MVP remains unfazed. 'As much as we can, we just got to treat it like every other game, every other situation we've been in,' Gilgeous-Alexander said. 'Yes, we haven't been in this situation, but that doesn't mean our character has to change, or what we did last time. 'It's still basketball, the game of basketball we grew up playing. The rules don't change because we're in the Finals.
