Masala Curry Chicken Noodle: Hearty & spicy curry noodles that taste like childhood

Yahoo19-05-2025

I woke up this morning with an intense craving for something spicy and soupy, preferably with my favourite carbs of choice — noodles. It is how I found myself at Teban Gardens Food Centre wolfing down a bowl of said spicy, soupy noodles at Masala Chicken Noodle.
Even in the blistering heat that 'feels like 35°C ', I was determined to satiate my cravings. This food centre is quite ulu, but I pressed on and trekked a good 500m from the bus stop to my destination. At least I clocked in my daily steps…
But, 'Why masala?' I was curious about the origin of their stall name. The friendly Chinese uncle running the stall explained that it is a homage to the Indian flavours in the curry, which piqued my curiosity further. Can really taste the masala inside meh?
What I tried at Masala Curry Chicken Noodle
You get no points for guessing what I ordered, lol. I got their Curry Chicken Noodle (S$5.50), and was so excited about their HUGE portions!
I blame it on the arduous walk here, but I was so hungry I couldn't resist taking a sip of the glistening, orange-y curry the moment I reached my table. The consistency of the curry was thick and creamy, unlike most curry mees I've grown accustomed to.
Taste-wise, hmm… it wasn't bad by any means and, in fact, carried a bold, savoury flavour with a spicy kick. I just felt as if there wasn't much dimension to it, possibly from a lack of spices. Sure, the flavours were booming in my mouth, but it was booming at a steady, boring beat, if that makes sense.
Masala is known to have a subtly earthy and sweet nuance, which was nowhere to be found in this bowl of 'masala curry'. The flavours did, however, remind me of the curry mee I used to eat in Primary and Secondary school, albeit more fiery.
Moving on to the chicken — this portion genuinely surprised me. There were 4 pieces in total, each one as meaty and substantial as the one in the picture above. It was mostly breast meat, too, which I had no qualms about as I generally prefer leaner meats.
Even for those who don't reach for breast meat, the curry played a defining role in reinstating some moisture into the thick chunks, keeping them tender. Rest assured, you won't be fighting for your life trying to swallow it.

Now, yellow noodles wouldn't usually be my noodle of choice, but here it is the default option. The usual alkaline-y taste was surprisingly muted, but likely because the curry was overpowering it. It would've been just a little more satisfying if the noodles were al dente, though.
At this point, I was sweating with every mouthful of the noodle-gravy combination. I'd like to think I can hold my spice decently well but as I progressed further into my meal, I could feel a fire settling at the pit of my stomach. It was kind of satisfying in a mildly sadistic way..? I'll spare you the details of my time spent in the toilet after.
Floating around in my curry were 2 sizeable pieces of potato, a handful of tau gei (bean sprouts) and 3 pieces of tau pok (fried beancurd puff), which might have been my favourite part of the meal! It soaked up all that warm, fragrant gravy that came oozing out as I bit into it, almost scalding my tongue but, hey, that's a vibe too.
Were my cravings satisfied? Yes. Would I travel back just for this bowl of curry noodles? Unfortunately, no.
I must say, their portions are bountiful and the owners really are generous with the ingredients. The masala taste wasn't prominent enough to impress me, but I can still appreciate this bowl of curry noodles for what it is.
Masala Curry Chicken Noodle also sells Curry Pork Ribs Rice/Noodle (S$6.50), which the uncle recommended I try next time. Perhaps I will if I'm in the area, but until then, I'll just stick to somewhere near me.
Expected damage: S$5.50 – S$6.50 per pax

American TikTok star planning another visit to 'beautiful' Bradford

A SOCIAL media star from America says he is already planning his next trip to Bradford after visiting the city for the first time. Kalani Smith - who posts under the social media handle 'Kalanighosthunter' and 'Kalani Vlogs' - is most known for making food and travel videos across the UK. The 26-year-old, who lives in Tennessee, fell in love with Yorkshire after tracing his ancestry back to different parts of the UK. His travels take him all over the country, having recently explored Blackpool, Nottingham, and Sheffield. Kalani Smith - who posts under the social media handle 'Kalanighosthunter' and 'Kalani Vlogs' - visits Bradford (Image: UGC) His latest adventure to Bradford was inspired by a satirical comment left under one of his recent videos. Kalani and his wife Savannah took up the offer and stopped by Bradford city centre for a day trip. He is now hoping to return and explore other places in the district. 'It was a place people told me not to go to, I guess - the comment was obviously satire,' Kalani told the T&A. 'I wanted to go because I heard it's the best place to get a curry. Up until that point I just knew Bradford was the place for a curry. Kalani Smith - who posts under the social media handle 'Kalanighosthunter' and 'Kalani Vlogs' - met up with Yorkshire's own Danny Malin from Rate My Takeaway (Image: UGC) 'Yorkshire has really cool history and architecture. Bradford really surprised me how much architecture is still there in the city centre. That combined with the people up North are just really nice and a lot of good food. 'Whitby is one of my favourite places. 'You can definitely tell there's a lot of diverse culture in Bradford - there's so many different groups of folks there. You can see why it won the City of Culture. Not in a bad way either, there's not many spots you can go into like that. London feels like that, there's so many different people melding in one spot. I thought that was really cool.' The couple decided to ask RateMyTakeaway's Danny Malin for his recommendations. 'Danny's a good friend of mine,' said Kalani. 'I asked him, being a Yorkshire lad, where he recommended in Bradford. He said the Sweet Centre for a curry. 'I will say it's different than ones I've had around the UK. The Sweet Centre ones are more authentic to Kashmir, they don't have all of the gravy sauce that I call them British curries now would have. I had lamb on the bone and spinach and chicken. You can really taste the protein and spice better that way. I enjoyed it. At the Sweet Centre (Image: UGC) 'I still like dunking my Naan in some chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, but it was really nice to get an authentic taste of what the curry was supposed to be like - or what it evolved from. 'In terms of authenticity, that's probably the most authentic curry I've had in the UK. It was very tasty.' He added: 'A few of my fans actually came up to me while I was streaming, people from Bradford that were super grateful I showed up. They were excited because they said not many people travel to Bradford.' Speaking about what he's learned on his explorations around the UK, he said: 'I've learned especially here if someone's telling me not to go somewhere, odds are they've never even stepped foot in the place. It's just a lot of predisposed opinions. Kalani Smith - who posts under the social media handle 'Kalanighosthunter' and 'Kalani Vlogs' - exploring Bradford city centre (Image: UGC) 'My goal is to try and go somewhere and find the bright spots and positives about where I'm at. I feel like after going to Bradford and some of the other places people tell me not to go, there's always really nice people to be found. 'Me and my wife both made a comment that it was absolutely beautiful, especially by City Hall and other spots. It kind of reminded us of some other cities we really enjoy. That wasn't something I was expecting, especially with the comments that people leave about Bradford, it was a nice surprise. Kalani Smith went shopping with Bradfordian Daniel at JD Sports for a Bradford makeover (Image: UGC) 'We'll come back to Bradford and do some more exploring. 'It makes a difference as a content creator being able to highlight places that maybe wouldn't be an American's first choice or even tenth choice to go. 'One thing I am happy my platform has done is its shown Brits they can travel within the UK to places they haven't been, see stuff that is absolutely beautiful, or food that's incredible, and it's been in their backyard and they just never really opened their eyes or knew what was there. "Although the trips to Spain are great, there's also spots here in the UK that you never knew existed.'

3 bowls of seafood noodles for just $10?

If you're going out in a party of 3, keep an eye out for He Shun Fish Noodle House and their limited-time promo. Until 31 Jul, they'll be offering a 50% discount on the third bowl of noodles you buy. Crawford Lane's HDB food court, a 6-minute walk from Lavender MRT station, is home to this 2 month promo. Don't say bojio! He Shun Fish Noodle House's promo extends to 6 of their menu items, with the most expensive dish at only S$6. So don't worry about budgets, because your total bill won't exceed S$15. In this economy, I'd say that's a big W. Prawn Noodle for S$5 and Fish Soup for S$5.50? If you get three bowls of Prawn Noodle, the total only comes to S$12.50. You could also mix and match the dishes, like a meat and seafood combo with the Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle (S$5). As someone who eats out with my parents, I know that meals for 3 often fall in the S$25 to S$30 range. AND the Fish Soup comes with a bowl of rice? I don't know about you, but carbs are my favourite sort of free add-on. For this price point and convenience, I'm hooked (pun intended). What if you're not hungry yet? You could also pre-order by phone and collect it from the store. It's a welcome escape from queueing up, especially with the horrid heat waves hitting Singapore these days. Slurping up hot fish ball noodles in air-conditioning is the break you need, trust me. So if you're in the vicinity, or if you're looking for a new neighbourhood to explore, pop by Crawford Lane for a bowl of noodles. Consider this your cue to shoot out a couple of texts to your kakis for a makan and jalan session, because He Shun Fish Noodle House's promo won't be here forever!
